This book was released on 2009 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the study was to analyse the challenges in detail and to formulate evidence-based policy recommendations. The report provides new data obtained from a company survey on the causes of the funding shortage and proposes remedies that are adapted to the specific needs of early- and late-stage product development respectively. By providing support to SMEs in Europe's biopharmaceutical sector, policy makers can help to strengthen their ability to develop new innovative healthcare products, thus spurring economic growth and employment in the EU and contributing to public health objectives.

Book Synopsis Patent Pools, Competition Law and Biotechnology by : Devdatta Malshe
Download or read book Patent Pools, Competition Law and Biotechnology written by Devdatta Malshe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the relationship between competition law and technology pools, this book provides general-purpose details of the biotechnology patent pool scheme while discussing historical developments, approaches of the US Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission, and the European Union Competition Commission via EU regulations. In addition to these regulatory approaches and evolution in concept and theory of technology pools, this book illustrates relationship issues including tying arrangements and essential facility consideration vis-à-vis technology pools. It analyzes the modalities of forming such pools in the area of biotechnology, specifically illustrating that the formation of technology pools is possible and can be safely undertaken, and proposes a viable solution and structure. Patent pools in the biotechnology industry will pave the way towards open collaborative research, reducing patent thickets. Formation of such pools will increase access to various technology and patents otherwise out of bounds, resulting in a reduction of licensing costs and a spur in the development of new solutions. Most importantly, such pools will reduce the frequency of patent toll gates, making the entire spectrum of research interesting from the perspective of researchers as well as investors. This book will be an aid to researchers studying intellectual property, patents, and biotechnology, as well as to interest groups including funding agencies, venture funds, angel investors, and proponents of the open-source movement.

Book Synopsis Industrialization of Biology by : National Research Council
Download or read book Industrialization of Biology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tremendous progress in biology over the last half century - from Watson and Crick's elucidation of the structure of DNA to today's astonishing, rapid progress in the field of synthetic biology - has positioned us for significant innovation in chemical production. New bio-based chemicals, improved public health through improved drugs and diagnostics, and biofuels that reduce our dependency on oil are all results of research and innovation in the biological sciences. In the past decade, we have witnessed major advances made possible by biotechnology in areas such as rapid, low-cost DNA sequencing, metabolic engineering, and high-throughput screening. The manufacturing of chemicals using biological synthesis and engineering could expand even faster. A proactive strategy - implemented through the development of a technical roadmap similar to those that enabled sustained growth in the semiconductor industry and our explorations of space - is needed if we are to realize the widespread benefits of accelerating the industrialization of biology. Industrialization of Biology presents such a roadmap to achieve key technical milestones for chemical manufacturing through biological routes. This report examines the technical, economic, and societal factors that limit the adoption of bioprocessing in the chemical industry today and which, if surmounted, would markedly accelerate the advanced manufacturing of chemicals via industrial biotechnology. Working at the interface of synthetic chemistry, metabolic engineering, molecular biology, and synthetic biology, Industrialization of Biology identifies key technical goals for next-generation chemical manufacturing, then identifies the gaps in knowledge, tools, techniques, and systems required to meet those goals, and targets and timelines for achieving them. This report also considers the skills necessary to accomplish the roadmap goals, and what training opportunities are required to produce the cadre of skilled scientists and engineers needed.
Book Synopsis Global Competitiveness in Pharmaceuticals by : Alfonso Gambardella

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pharmaceuticals is a large, high-growth, globalized, & innovation intensive industry. Pharmaceuticals has long been a stronghold of the European industry, & it still provides by far the largest contribution to the European trade balance in high-technology, R&D intensive sectors. However, it is now a diffused perception that the European pharmaceutical industry is losing ground vis-a-vis the U.S. Against this background, the Report examines the competitive position of the European pharmaceutical companies & industries, & compares them with the pharmaceutical companies & industries in other parts of the world, particularly the U.S. Charts, tables & graphs.
Book Synopsis Uncertain Risks Regulated by : Ellen Vos
Download or read book Uncertain Risks Regulated written by Ellen Vos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-26 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertain Risks Regulated compares various models of risk regulation in order to understand how these systems shape the relationship between law and science, and how they attempt to overcome public distrust in science-based decision-making. The book contributes to the ongoing debate relating to uncertainty and risks - and the difficulties faced by the European Union in particular - in regulating theses issues, taking account of both national and international constraints. The term 'uncertain risk' is comparable with notions of hazard and indeterminate risk, as deployed within the social sciences; but it also aims to capture the modern regulatory reality that a non-quantifiable hazard must still be addressed by society, law and its regulators. Decisions must be taken in the face of uncertainty. And, whilst it is not possible to provide clear cut models of risk regulation, in focusing on regulatory practices at a national, EU and international level, the contributors to this volume aim to use fact finding as a core instrument of learning for risk regulation.
