Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulating Toxic Substances in Surface Water offers a critical examination of the mechanisms used to control, reduce, and eliminate toxic substances and their impacts on aquatic ecosystems and on human health. The book explains how surface water criteria for toxic substances are developed and how criteria are used to control sources of toxic pollutants to surface waters. The book examines the many science-policy decisions that are made during implementation of the Clean Water Act and explores several areas of surface water impairment that have not been addressed by existing regulatory mechanisms. Practical outcomes of decisions as they are implemented on state and federal levels are covered as well. Regulating Toxic Substances in Surface Water will be useful for federal and state water quality regulators, municipal wastewater treatment plant managers, managers of industries that discharge toxic substances to surface waters, environmental consultants, and others interested in the topic.

Book Synopsis Chlorinated Organic Compounds in the Environment by : Sub Ramamoorthy
Download or read book Chlorinated Organic Compounds in the Environment written by Sub Ramamoorthy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-09-17 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides up-to-date information on chlorinated organics in the environment that can be used in monitoring, impact assessment, and decision-making processes. The text assists readers in predicting the potential for organic contamination as well as the critical medium of exposure to the health of the ecosystem and humans. Toxicity profiles provided for each chemical allow for evaluation of the short- and long-term effects on the environment. Discussions of environmental residues and pertinent worldwide regulations help readers compare chloroorganic contamination in different areas and analyze the associated regulatory approaches. Chlorinated Organic Compounds in the Environment begins with an introduction to chlorinated organic compounds and discussions of fate processes and environmental migration, based on their physical properties and processes. Next, the text focuses on chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons; chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons-monocyclic and polycyclic compounds; and chlorinated biocides, phenols, dioxins, and furans in the environment. The North American and International regulations and advisories in the management of chlorinated organic compounds are reviewed in Chapters 3-8. The last two chapters of the book deal with prioritization for regulatory and monitoring assessment and regulatory decision-making processes. A glossary and comprehensive subject index makes terms easy to understand and find throughout the text. Environmental managers, regulatory personnel, scientists, and students will gain a broader understanding of environmental problems and how they can be applied to different disciplines such as chemistry, life sciences, and engineering with this important reference.

Book Synopsis Risk-Based Waste Classification in California by : National Research Council
Download or read book Risk-Based Waste Classification in California written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-08-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) of the State of California Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of complying with the Regulatory Structure Update. The Regulatory Structure Update is a comprehensive review and refocusing of California's system for identifying and regulating management of hazardous wastes. As part of this effort, the DTSC proposes to change its current waste classification system that categorizes wastes as hazardous or nonhazardous based on their toxicity. Under the proposed system there would be two risk-based thresholds rather than the single toxicity threshold currently used to distinguish between the wastes. Wastes that contain specific chemicals at concentrations that exceed the upper threshold will be designated as hazardous; those below the lower threshold will be nonhazardous; and those with chemical concentrations between the two thresholds will be "special" wastes and subject to variances for management and disposal. The proposed DTSC system combines toxicity information with short or long-term exposure information to determine the risks associated with the chemicals. Under section 57004 of the California Health and Safety Code, the scientific basis of the proposed waste classification system is subject to external scientific peer review by the National Academy of Sciences, the University of California, or other similar institution of higher learning or group of scientists. This report addresses that regulatory requirement.

Download or read book Regulating Drinking Water Quality written by Charles E. Gilbert and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-12-18 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulating Drinking Water Quality examines the issue of safe drinking water from both scientific and public health policy points of view. Twenty-seven chapters provide a forum in which EPA and non-EPA scientists discuss the challenges of implementing the 1986 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendments. General areas covered include an update on regulating lead in drinking water, radon in drinking water, regulating for microbes and disinfection by-products, exposure assessment and drinking water contamination, risk assessment and drinking water contamination, and consumer protection from drinking water point of use systems. Drinking water professionals, environmental and engineering professionals, regulatory personnel, and legislators should consider this important new book a "must have" acquisition for their libraries.
