Book excerpt: The goal of this dissertation is to contribute to both the nonlocal and the local settings of regularity theory within the calculus of variations. In the nonlocal theory, we first establish the existence of minimizers for two classes of functionals. However, the main result of Chapter 2 states an analogue for higher differentiability of minimizers in the setting of nonlocal functionals, which is established through an application of the difference quotient method. This nonlocal analogue is stated in terms of the fractional order difference quotient, which corresponds to the order of the Besov space to which the solution belongs.

On one hand the authors want to present a new technique called $p$-caloric approximation, which is a proper generalization of the classical compactness methods first developed by DeGiorgi with his Harmonic Approximation Lemma. This last result, initially introduced in the setting of Geometric Measure Theory to prove the regularity of minimal surfaces, is nowadays a classical tool to prove linearization and regularity results for vectorial problems. Here the authors develop a very far reaching version of this general principle devised to linearize general degenerate parabolic systems. The use of this result in turn allows the authors to achieve the subsequent and main aim of the paper, that is, the implementation of a partial regularity theory for parabolic systems with degenerate diffusion of the type $\partial_t u - \mathrm{div} a(Du)=0$, without necessarily assuming a quasi-diagonal structure, i.e. a structure prescribing that the gradient non-linearities depend only on the the explicit scalar quantity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regularity of solutions is an important part of the theory of partial differential equations. In this text, the regularity of solutions to elliptic and parabolic problems in Lipschitz domains is investigated. Maximal regularity estimates are useful when dealing with nonlinear parabolic problems. However, the known maximal regularity results for smooth domains no longer hold in Lp-spaces over Lipschitz domains for the whole range of exponents p. Here, maximal regularity estimates are shown for the Laplacian with suitable domain in Lp-spaces for a restricted range of p. Operators with L-coefficients in convex domains and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators in exterior Lipschitz domains are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The issue of regularity has played a central role in the theory of Partial Differential Equations almost since its inception, and despite the tremendous advances made it still remains a very fruitful research field. In particular considerable strides have been made in regularity estimates for degenerate and singular elliptic and parabolic equations over the last several years, and in many unexpected and challenging directions. Because of all these recent results, it seemed high time to create an overview that would highlight emerging trends and issues in this fascinating research topic in a proper and effective way. The course aimed to show the deep connections between these topics and to open new research directions through the contributions of leading experts in all of these fields.

This book presents a general picture of current results about wave solutions of parabolic systems, their existence, stability, and bifurcations. With introductory material accessible to non-mathematicians and a nearly complete bibliography of about 500 references, this book is an excellent resource on the subject.

Book excerpt: This book gives a systematic treatment of the basic theory of analytic semigroups and abstract parabolic equations in general Banach spaces, and of how such a theory may be used in parabolic PDE's. It takes into account the developments of the theory during the last fifteen years, and it is focused on classical solutions, with continuous or Holder continuous derivatives. On one hand, working in spaces of continuous functions rather than in Lebesgue spaces seems to be appropriate in view of the number of parabolic problems arising in applied mathematics, where continuity has physical meaning; on the other hand it allows one to consider any type of nonlinearities (even of nonlocal type), even involving the highest order derivatives of the solution, avoiding the limitations on the growth of the nonlinear terms required by the LP approach. Moreover, the continuous space theory is, at present, sufficiently well established. For the Hilbert space approach we refer to J. L. LIONS - E. MAGENES [128], M. S. AGRANOVICH - M. l. VISHIK [14], and for the LP approach to V. A. SOLONNIKOV [184], P. GRISVARD [94], G. DI BLASIO [72], G. DORE - A. VENNI [76] and the subsequent papers [90], [169], [170]. Many books about abstract evolution equations and semigroups contain some chapters on analytic semigroups. See, e. g. , E. HILLE - R. S. PHILLIPS [100]' S. G. KREIN [114], K. YOSIDA [213], A. PAZY [166], H. TANABE [193], PH.

This class of problems contains, in particular, a number of reaction-diffusion systems which arise in various mathematical models, especially in chemistry, physics and biology. The book is self-contained and up-to-date, taking special care on the didactical preparation of the material. It is devoted to problems that are intensively studied but have not been treated thus far in depth in the book literature.
