Download or read book Capybara written by José Roberto Moreira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capybara is the neotropical mammal with the highest potential for production and domestication. Amongst the favorable characteristics for domestication we can list its high prolificacy, rapid growth rate, a herbivorous diet, social behavior and relative tameness. The genus (with only two species) is found from the Panama Canal to the north of Argentina on the east of the Andes. Chile is the only country in South America where the capybara is not found. The species is eaten all over its range, especially by poor, rural and traditional communities engaged in subsistence hunting. On the other hand, in large urban settlements wildlife is consumed by city dwellers as a delicacy. The sustainable management of capybara in the wild has been adopted by some South American countries, while others have encouraged capybara rearing in captivity.

Book Synopsis Taxonomy of Australian Mammals by : Stephen Matthew Jackson
Download or read book Taxonomy of Australian Mammals written by Stephen Matthew Jackson and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taxonomy of Australian Mammals utilises the latest morphometric and genetic research to develop the most up to date and comprehensive revision of the taxonomy of Australian mammals undertaken to date. It proposes significant changes to the higher ranks of a number of groups and recognises several genera and species that have only very recently been identified as distinct. This easy to use reference also includes a complete listing of all species, subspecies and synonyms for all of Australia’s mammals, both native and introduced as well as terrestrial and marine. This book lays a foundation for future taxonomic work and identifies areas where taxonomic studies should be targeted, not only at the species and subspecies level but also broader phylogenetic relationships. This work will be an essential reference for students, scientists, wildlife managers and those interested in the science of taxonomy.

Book Synopsis Ontogeny, Intraspecific Variation, and Systematics of the Late Cambrian Trilobite Dikelocephalus by : Nigel C. Hughes
Download or read book Ontogeny, Intraspecific Variation, and Systematics of the Late Cambrian Trilobite Dikelocephalus written by Nigel C. Hughes and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biometric analyses of well-localized specimens of the trilobite Dikelocephalus from the St. Lawrence Formation (Upper Cambrian), northern Mississippi Valley, suggest that all specimens belong to a single, highly variable morphospecies, D. minnesotensis. A complex pattern of ontogenetically-related and ontogeny-independent variation produced a mosaic of morphotypes, which show greater diversity than previously recorded within trilobite species. There is considerable variation within collections made from single beds. Variations of characters among collections are mosaic, and are clinal in some cases. Patterns of variation within Dikelocephalus cannot be related to lithofacies occurrence. There are no obvious temporal variations in D. minnesotensis within the St. Lawrence Formation, but some Dikelocephalus from the underlying Tunnel City Group may belong to a different taxon. The validity of this early taxon is questionable due to a lack of available material. The mosaic pattern of variation in Dikelocephalus mimics that documented at higher taxonomic levels in primitive libristomate trilobites, and helps explain difficulties in providing a workable taxonomy of primitive trilobites. Results caution proposition of evolutionary scenarios that do not take account of intraspecific variation. The recovery of dorsal shields of Dikelocephalus permits the first detailed reconstruction of the entire exoskeleton. The systematics of the genus is revised and twenty-five species are suppressed as junior synonyms of D. minnesotensis.

Book Synopsis Bibliography and Index of the Sirenia and Desmostylia by : Daryl P. Domning
Download or read book Bibliography and Index of the Sirenia and Desmostylia written by Daryl P. Domning and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significant published literature on the neobiology, paleobiology, and ethnobiology of the mammalian orders Sirenia and Desmostylia is exhaustively cataloged in approximately 4590 main entries alphabetized by the author. Both technical and popular works are included, and many entries are annotated. The earliest work cited is a letter by N. Syllacio published in 1494 or 1495, describing Columbus's second voyage to the New World. The effective closing date of the bibliography was 1 May 1994. Six appendices list serial publications devoted to Sirenia, additional sources for history of sirenology and sirenian conservation, coins and postage stamps depicting sirenians, a comprehensive classification and synonymy of sirenians and desmostylians, a summary of the nomenclature of the Recent species of sirenians, and an alphabetical list of the species-group names that have been applied to sirenians and desmostylians. An extensive index is provided, employing 1059 subject headings and cross references; the subject headings include all Linnaean names and combinations ever employed for sirenians and desmostylians, as well as names of all reported sirenian food plants and parasites. More than 40% of the main entries are fully indexed, and many others are partially indexed, yielding a total of over 13,950 index entries. Each complete index entry includes author and date of the work cited, a brief annotation describing the content of the work as it pertains to the indexed subject, and a page reference for the material pertaining to that subject.

Book Synopsis Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction by : Fatma El-Bawab
Download or read book Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction written by Fatma El-Bawab and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-01-18 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction deals with the practical and theoretical objectives of the descriptive embryology of invertebrates, along with discussions on reproduction in these groups of animals. It explains several morphological and anatomical expressions in the field and covers the embryology of invertebrate animals, starting from the Protozoa, to the Echinodermata, the Protochordate and Tunicates. These groups include economically important aquatic invertebrates, such as crustaceans, as well as medically important invertebrates and economic arthropods. Each chapter is preceded by the taxonomy of the discussed phylum and/or the species to enable the reader to locate the systematic position. Covers phylum definition, general characteristics, classification, reproduction, agametic reproduction, gametic reproduction, spawning, fertilization, development and embryogenesis Includes recent findings in the area, along with detailed figures and photos that illustrate important concepts Brings together difficult-to-obtain research data from the field, not only in Egyptian libraries, but globally, and previously only found through specialized references not widely available Clarifies descriptions with striking photos and electron microscopical studies of different species
