Book excerpt: This book is the product of a collaboration stretching the years 2007-10, whose initial fruit was a paper on “Plenum Theory” published in Nous. The work grew out of the author’s conviction that standard set theory, which had evolved to meet the needs of mathematics, was not fully adequate to the less abstractly geared and rigidly determine needs of less finalized ranges of inquiry and deliberation.

Book excerpt: This is a story of transformation. It is a story of evangelism, discipleship and church planting. It is a story of reaching the nations of the world with the gospel. It is an exciting story. In 1970 the Prescott Foursquare Church in Arizona was struggling. It had been morally violated and broken. It was a small abused congregation. At that time, Prescott was a rural town of about 17,000 persons in northwestern Arizona. Wayman Mitchell took the pastorate of the Prescott Foursquare Church in January. The addition of his family increased the size of the congregation to about two-dozen persons. From this small congregation in a small rural community God has raised a movement that has impacted the world. The Christian Fellowship Ministries (CFM), as it is now called, has birthed over twenty-two hundred churches located in one hundred and sixteen nations of the world. This story is meaningful to layman and minister alike. It is meaningful for the broader Christian community. This story tells how God can use common men and women and the common things of humanity to minister in the regions beyond.America in the 1970s was experiencing the Jesus People Movement (JPM). That movement changed America and impacted much of the western world. Principles from that movement became part of the CFM. The language of transformation was common to the Jesus people. When witnessing, they commonly cited Romans 12:1-2. The Prescott ministry picked up the importance of transformation for individuals and the church. The Great Commission also stirred Jesus people. There was urgency about wining the world to Jesus The biblical and theological foundation for evangelism, discipleship and church planting of the Christian Fellowship Ministry starts with this commission found in Matthew 28:16-20. The ministry of the CFM was not the plan of a man or group of people. It was by trial and error, a decision here and a decision there, and out of some things that seemed to work that the ministry of the CFM evolved. It was not the discovery of a new doctrine or the rediscovery of an old one. It was not the implementation of a program that transformed the CFM. It was the discovery of what God was doing and implementing that in the Prescott church. The deeper discovery was that God was restoring the dignity of the local church. The indigenous church principle and the making of disciples propelled the mission forward. This book is intended to provide an example of what God can do with people who simply try and follow God. Based on biblical and Christian principles it is intended to inspire persons to the work of God. And it is intended to inspire ministers to the possibilities of God when faced with the impossibilities of the world. This story uncovers the core elements that led a broken church out of brokenness to spiritual health and world impact. This is not a history, formula for revival, or step-by-step guide for church growth. It is an example of what God can do with a common people who seek to faithfully obey God.

Book excerpt: Enlarge My Coast tells of Pastor Blackstone's return to India to see the completion of a project inspired during his first trip to the subcontinent of Asia in 2006. This time his traveling companion will be a church deacon of the Emmanuel Baptist Church, Russ Coffin. Blackstone and Coffin travel to Kerala State to help in the dedication of the new Venmony Baptist Church sanctuary and parsonage built through the support of their ministry in Maine. Once again Pastor Blackstone is able to share the wonders and wants of India through the eyes of another adventurous traveler. Enjoy with them the fascination of watching a working elephant beside a rural road; the attempt of catching on film five people on a motorcycle at one time; a houseboat ride on Kerala's largest lake; listening to Russ's first sermon; graduation day at Kerala Baptist Bible College; an Indian barbeque of pancakes and omelets; of trying to find a bell for the college in the busy and confusing markets of one of Kerala's biggest cities; and an auto-rickshaw ride through rubber tree-lined lanes, banana grove-covered valleys, and an Indian road repair crew! As in his other India books, Though None Go with Me and Though One Go with Me, share the practical spiritual lessons Pastor Blackstone learned on this, his third "India journey" and his first mission trip to the State of Andrah Pradesh as the guest evangelist for the Independent Gospel Baptist Churches of India. Share in the personal experience of a daylong journey on the infamous Indian railway into the backcountry of central India, of driving a bullock cart, eating an Indian catfish, making friends with a dog named Ellie, preaching in a thatched-roof church, being surprised by a police raid at four in the morning, and witnessing more people coming to Christ at one time than at any other time in the pastor's ministry. Journey for a month into the unpredictable land of India and enjoy the surprises around each corner as Pastor Blackstone travels to three Indian states and gets to meet fellow pastors from five states. The fellowship will be sweet, the food will be hot, and the friendships made will be eternal!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its earliest days, photography was seen as depicting its subjects with such objectivity as to be inherently free of ideological bias. Today we are rightly more skeptical -- at least most of the time. When it comes to photography from the past, we tend to set some of our skepticism aside. But should we? In Light on Darkness? T. Jack Thompson, a leading historian of African Christianity, revisits the body of photography generated by British missionaries to sub-Saharan Africa in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and demonstrates that much more is going on in these images than meets the eye. This volume offers a careful reassessment of missionary photographers, their photographs, and their African and European audiences. Several dozen fascinating photographs from the period are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How regions and cities adapt to a Network Society and a globalized environment, the policies they pursue and how structures of governance are transformed in the pursuit of those policies are major themes in this volume. These issues are addressed with specific reference to the Nordic regions of Europe. Covering the four Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden plus the Faroe Islands, this volume charts the changes in networking activities and related development initiatives that have taken place over the last ten years. This means analysing regions in their pursuit of new policies, partnerships and styles of representation. Through this process regions are becoming partners and players in European integration and a movement of integrative regionalism is taking shape which is different from inward looking identity regionalism or self-centred competitive regionalism and takes regions beyond lobbying in Brussels.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of essays that considers the continuing cultural relevance of the cyberpunk genre into the new millennium. Cyberpunk is no longer an emergent phenomenon, but in our digital age of CGI-driven entertainment, the information economy, and globalized capital, we have never more been in need of a fiction capable of engaging with a world shaped by information technology. The essays in explore our cyberpunk realities to soberly reconsider Eighties-era cyberpunk while also mapping contemporary cyberpunk. The contributors seek to move beyond the narrow strictures of cyberpunk as defined in the Eighties and contribute to an ongoing discussion of how to negotiate exchanges among information technologies, global capitalism, and human social existence. The essays offer a variety of perspectives on cyberpunk’s diversity and how this sub-genre remains relevant amidst its transformation from a print fiction genre into a more generalized set of cultural practices, tackling the question of what it is that cyberpunk narratives continue to offer us in those intersections of literary, cultural, theoretical, academic, and technocultural environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debates on regionalism have been polarized between European Union (EU) scholars and non-EU scholars, with the assumption being that regionalism within the EU and other regions of the world are quite distinct, with little to be learnt from dialogue with each other. This book challenges such assumptions and calls for a genuine debate between scholars of regionalism. This book demonstrates that more can and needs to be learned about regional integration all over the world through comparison and reflection on specific regional trends. Beginning with a theoretically driven introduction, leading experts in the field are brought together to offer a series of case studies on regional integration within Latin America, Africa, Asia, North America and Europe. In Part III the authors investigate the links between the EU and selected other regional organisations and processes, exploring the dynamics through which these interregional relations are developing and the implications they have for the study of contemporary regionalism/regionalisation both inside and beyond the continent of Europe. The conclusions set out a challenging research agenda for comparative studies in the field. Addressing one of the under-explored aspects of EU studies, the EU’s coexistence with other pan-continental/regional organisations in the European continent, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of regionalism, IPE, European Studies and international politics.
