Book Synopsis Regional Minorities and Development in Asia by : Huhua Cao
Download or read book Regional Minorities and Development in Asia written by Huhua Cao and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia has undergone strong economic growth since the Second World War. However, it also experiences growing economic and regional disparities brought about by this unprecedented development. This economic growth cannot be considered sustainable without taking into consideration the social development of minority populations, as well as the fundamentals of minority rights. The chapters in this book work from the premise that an environment that favours the emergence of various conditions necessary for the development of minority populations will contribute towards further economic development and prosperity, as well as the social cohesion of the entire country. Bringing together perspectives from Economics, Development and Area Studies, Geography, Anthropology, and Sociology, the contributors provide local narratives that shed light on some of the different needs, situations, and methods of problem solving. This diverse approach gives a nuanced perspective on social, economic and political inequality, and the ways in which people are constructing varied responses to the challenges of modernization. Through the comparison of the characteristics and realities of minority region development among countries in East and Southeast Asia, this book provides a better understanding of the development-related challenges faced by minority regions in the current context of modernization and globalization.

Download or read book Tribal Communities in the Malay World written by Geoffrey Benjamin and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malay World (Alam Melayu), spanning the Malay Peninsula, much of Sumatra, and parts of Borneo, has long contained within it a variety of populations. Most of the Malays have been organized into the different kingdoms (kerajaan Melayu) from which they have derived their identity. But the territories of those kingdoms have also included tribal peoples - both Malay and non-Malay - who have held themselves apart from those kingdoms in varying degrees. In the last three decades, research on these tribal societies has aroused increasing interest. This book explores the ways in which the character of these societies relates to the Malay kingdoms that have held power in the region for many centuries past, as well as to the modern nation-states of the region. It brings together researchers committed to comparative analysis of the tribal groups living on either side of the Malacca Straits - in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. New theoretical and descriptive approaches are presented for the study of the social and cultural continuities and discontinuities manifested by tribal life in the region.

Book Synopsis The Qur'an in the Malay-Indonesian World by : Majid Daneshgar
Download or read book The Qur'an in the Malay-Indonesian World written by Majid Daneshgar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largely Arabo-centric approach to the academic study of tafsir has resulted in a lack of literature exploring the diversity of Qur'anic interpretation in other areas of the Muslim-majority world. The essays in The Qur'an in the Malay-Indonesian World resolve this, aiming to expand our knowledge of tafsir and its history in the Malay-Indonesian world. Highlighting the scope of Qur'anic interpretation in the Malay world in its various vernaculars, it also contextualizes this work to reveal its place as part of the wider Islamic world, especially through its connections to the Arab world, and demonstrates the strength of these connections. The volume is divided into three parts written primarily by scholars from Malaysia and Indonesia. Beginning with a historical overview, it then moves into chapters with a more specifically regional focus to conclude with a thematic approach by looking at topics of some controversy in the broader world. Presenting new examinations of an under-researched topic, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Islamic studies and Southeast Asian studies.

Book Synopsis Southeast Asia's Misunderstood Miracle by : Jomo K.s.
Download or read book Southeast Asia's Misunderstood Miracle written by Jomo K.s. and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1997-07-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia's Misunderstood Miracle emphasizes the contribution of government intervention, especially selective industrial policy, to growth, structural change, and late industrialization in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Although government intervention has certainly been abused for private gain, it has also been crucial for the sustained rapid growth and structural change experienced in the region. Similarly, Southeast Asian resource wealth may have weakened the imperative to industrialize in the region, but inferior government intervention probably accounts for the relatively less impressive industrial achievements of the three countries. The study also stresses the significant contribution of regional economic dynamics, especially the increased role of direct foreign investment from Japan and the first tier, newly industrializing economies of South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Thus, the book qualifies, contradicts, and challenges some of the conclusions and policy recommendations of other works such as the World Bank's influential East Asian Miracle (1993), which suggested that other developing countries should seek to emulate the second tier Southeast Asian NICs rather than the first tier East Asian NIEs.

Book Synopsis The Official Indonesian Qurʾān Translation by : Fadhli Lukman
Download or read book The Official Indonesian Qurʾān Translation written by Fadhli Lukman and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the political and institutional project of Al-Qur’an dan Terjemahnya, the official translation of the Qurʾān into Indonesian by the Indonesian government. It investigates how the translation was produced and presented, and how it is read, as well as considering the implications of the state’s involvement in such a work. Lukman analyses the politicisation of the Qurʾān commentary through discussion of how the tafsīr mechanism functions in this version, weighing up the translation’s dual constraints: the growing political context, on the one hand, and the tafsīr tradition on the other. In doing so, the book pays attention to three key areas: the production phase, the textual material, and the reception of the translation by readers. This book will be of value to scholars with an interest in tafsīr studies, modern and Southeast Asian or Indonesian tafsīr sub-fields, the study of Qurʾān translations, and Indonesian politics and religion more broadly.
