Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication examines well-being across Kazakhstan's regions. It suggests how a deeper understanding of regional differences can help policymakers tailor interventions and promote more equitable development. The publication shares findings from a study that used data from a 2022 survey of well-being across Kazakhstan to create two indices. One index measures people’s subjective well-being and the other combines perceptions data with objective socioeconomic data to build a broader picture of well-being. The authors analyze regions’ index scores and suggest how policymakers can use an understanding of regional differences in well-being to contribute to more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable development in Kazakhstan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk factors for chronic diseases differ between men and women. Exploring and tracking the direction and magnitude of trends in exposure to risk factors and accessing services will provide valuable insights into the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases. As sex-disaggregated data can hide important differences between men and women, it is important to analyze the non-communicable disease data gender-wise. Research in these areas will also help to understand the role of gender and help in the planning of gender-responsive health promotion or preventive campaigns and gender-responsive interventions. There is a need to address the impact of gender norms, roles, and the social determinants of health on the differential exposure to risk factors between men and women. Health-seeking behavior, life years of exposure, and the responses from health care providers in a gender/sex aggregated manner could also give interesting insights into the role of gender. Men are not homogenous groups and their health opportunities and risks vary according to social, economic, environmental, and cultural influences throughout their lifetime. The disproportionate morbidity among women and disproportionately high mortality among men also need to be looked into. Articles on the above areas will also help to address the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 on gender equality and empowering women with NCD-related targets under SDG 3 on ensuring healthy lives. In this context, it would be invaluable to create and compile research articles in this area.

Book excerpt: More than any other text for the course, Pulsipher's World Regional Geography (WRG) shows students how individuals are affected by, and respond to, economic, social, and political forces at all levels of scale: global, regional, subregional, local. It offers a vivid and inclusive picture of people in a globalizing world--men, women, children, both mainstream and marginalized citizens--not as seen from a Western perspective, but as they see themselves. The core topics of physical, economic, cultural, and political geography are examined from a contemporary perspective, based on authoritative insights from the most recent geographic theory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scale of [this book] encompasses vast continents and global forces, but often its descriptive focus on individual lives has the most impact. Stories of people and families make the study of geography compelling. Students begin to grasp the complex patterns at work in the world today as they see how people are affected by, and respond to, economic, social, and political processes. Through these stories of individual lives, [the authors] hope to convey the impact of globalization, a major theme of the text. To highlight global to local and interregional connections, the text includes a number of topics that have no borders: the war on terrorism, realignments in the global political order, interregional trade, the global economy, popular culture, the environment, and the Internet. Here, again, the focus on the individual person provides insight, offering local perspectives on these global trends.-Preface.

Many factors that influence people's well-being are local issues, such as employment, access to health services, pollution, and security. Policies that take into account the regional differences hidden within national averages can therefore have a greater impact on improving well-being for the country as a whole. This report presents the OECD analytical framework for measuring well-being at the regional level as well as internationally comparable indicators on 9 well-being dimensions for 362 regions across 34 OECD countries. It also provides guidance for all levels of government in using well-being measures to design policies to better target the specific needs of different communities. Drawing on a variety of practical experiences from OECD regions and cities, the report discusses methodological and political solutions for selecting regional well-being outcome indicators, monitoring the progress of regional well-being over time, and implementing a process of multi-stakeholder engagement to promote social change.

This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the half-way point in the implementation period of Health 2020 having been crossed this report reflects on the effect that the policy has had on the Region. Like its predecessors in 2012 and 2015 the 2018 report is an essential resource for the 53 Member States of the WHO European Region to report on progress towards the Health 2020 targets outlining areas that may be unfinished by 2020 and beyond. Lessons learned from across the Region on action taken by the WHO Regional Office for Europe and Member States to improve the health and well-being of their populations are presented. The report also addresses the new public health challenges that have emerged in recent years. To respond effectively to these challenges new forms of evidence are essential to measure health and well-being in different cultural and subjective contexts. This is particularly important in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals whose health indicators overlap significantly with those for Health 2020. The report will be a useful source of information for policy-makers throughout the Region helping them identify areas that need further assessment and policy action at the national level. It should inspire Member States and other stakeholders to contribute to the work under the umbrella of the WHO European Health Information Initiative: a collaboration between the Regional Office European institutions and Member States aimed at improving the information that underpins policy. Only through broad international cooperation and bold strides in the way evidence is used in the 21st century will evidence fully inform health policy-making for the benefit of all.

Book excerpt: Promoting regional cooperation in the health sector is an operational priority of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Strategy 2030. This scoping study assesses the potential of CAREC to promote regional cooperation and integration in the health sector to mitigate risks and develop national health systems. The study specifically reviews the burden of communicable and noncommunicable diseases and their risk factors, along with the progress and challenges in health systems development in the CAREC region. Based on the assessment, the study recommends strengthening regional health security; developing health systems through regional cooperation; and improving health services for migrants, mobile populations, and border communities.

Book excerpt: Strategic Narratives, Ontological Security and Global Policy provides a pathbreaking account of why some states successfully convince others to join their policy initiatives, and why others fail. Examining China’s Belt and Road Initiative and COVID-19, Thomas Colley and Carolijn van Noort argue that strategic narratives can help persuade states to join global policy initiatives if they convincingly promise audiences material gain while avoiding undermining their ontological security. They make their case by analysing eight diverse countries: India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Mexico, the Maldives, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA. Theoretically novel and global in scope, this book provides a compelling explanation of how strategic narratives can help achieve the global policy coordination needed to confront vital challenges in contemporary international relations. The proposed strategic narrative buy-in framework is applicable to many global policy issues, be it promoting trade and infrastructure projects, mitigating climate change or managing pandemics.
