Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2004 , this work is based on a collaborative research project, this trilogy considers the dynamics of demilitarisation and peace-building in southern Africa in the aftermath of major violent conflicts. The overall aim of the research is to support and facilitate the achievement of sustainable peace and human development in southern Africa, by analysing demilitarisation and peace-building processes in the region and identifying policy options and interventions for peace-building. The central focus of the research is the extent to which demilitarisation following the termination of wars has contributed to broad processes of peace-building in the affected region. Has the military in southern Africa downsized and refocused towards new roles? Has there been a 'peace-dividend', allowing more investment in economic and human development, thereby dealing with some of the root causes of conflict? Volume I provides a conceptual framework for the analysis of demilitarisation and peace-building processes, applicable particularly in the southern Africa context. This volume argues that a broad concept of peace-building has to take into account economic, political, social and cultural factors, at the local, national and regional level.

Book Synopsis Community of Insecurity by : Laurie Nathan
Download or read book Community of Insecurity written by Laurie Nathan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the formation, evolution and effectiveness of the regional security arrangements of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Nathan examines a number of vital and troubling questions: * why has SADC struggled to establish a viable security regime? * why has it been unable to engage in successful peacemaking?, and * why has it defied the optimistic prognosis in the early 1990s that it would build a security community in Southern Africa? He argues that the answers to these questions lie in the absence of common values among member states, the weakness of these states and their unwillingness to surrender sovereignty to the regional organization. Paradoxically, the challenge of building a co-operative security regime lies more at the national level than at the regional level. The author's perspective is based on a unique mix of insider access, analytical rigour and accessible theory.

Book excerpt: The New Democratic South Africa led by the African National Congress is in the process of making fundamental choices. Will South Africa's future be one where the needs of the majority population are at last addressed? A future where its hegemonic relations with neighbouring states are restructured in an equitable direction? A future where South Africa stands up for its own interests and those of Africa? Or, alternatively, will the new leadership become distanced from its popular roots and pushed into a globalizing perspective which marginalizes its own immiserated classes and an immiserated continent? These are some of the inter-related questions which the contributors to this volume - South African, African and Western scholars and participants in the process - explore. In a context which portrays the current state of Africa's political economy and the legacy of apartheid within South Africa itself, the political, security and in particular economic dimensions of South Africa's present and possible future relations with the rest of the Continent are examined. This book's wealth of concrete information, cogent analysis and informed clarification of the choices available make it a valuable, policy-relevant contribution. It also marks the start of ACDESS's ambitious research programme on this theme.

Book Synopsis Security and Democracy in Southern Africa by : Gavin Cawthra
Download or read book Security and Democracy in Southern Africa written by Gavin Cawthra and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2007 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Africa has embarked on one of the world's most ambitious security co-operation initiatives, seeking to roll out the principles of the United Nations at regional levels. This book examines the triangular relationship between democratisation, the character of democracy and its deficits, and national security practices and perceptions of eleven southern African states. It explores what impact these processes and practices have had on the collaborative security project in the region. Based on national studies conducted by African academics and security practitioners over three years, it includes an examination of the way security is conceived and managed, as well as a comparative analysis of regional security co-operation in the developing world.
