Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between flexible regional economic integration in the East African Community (EAC), through its application of variable geometry, and the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a continent-wide form of integration. It uses a historical, political, legal and economic analysis of the processes that led to the adoption of flexible regional integration in Africa, with particular regard to the EAC. This takes place in the inescapable context of pan-Africanism, showing how regional integration efforts in Africa are based on pan-Africanist ideals, and how an evolution of these ideals has led to an evolution in the goals of integration. With growing awareness of the weaknesses and impracticality of consensus-based decision-making on a global level, it makes the case for the pursuit of flexibility in multilateral trade, drawing lessons from the experience of the AfCFTA and blocs in other regions. This book is a historical evaluation of regional economic integration efforts in Africa and it follows the path of attempts to integrate the economies on the continent from colonial times to the birth of the AfCFTA. While it is a study in law, it relies heavily on politics, economics and history to weave together a more complete theory of economic integration based on the African experience. Flexible Regional Economic Integration in Africa was awarded the 2020 SIEL–Hart Prize in International Economic Law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional trade agreements (RTAs) are not new, but their complexity and importance in global economics and politics has grown exponentially in the past two decades. Tackling this daunting proliferation head on, this book provides a much-needed guide to RTAs. Setting current regional agreements in their economic, political, and historical context, David A. Lynch describes and compares every significant RTA, region by region. He clearly explains their intricate inner workings, their webs of collaboration and conflict, and their primary goals and effectiveness. Lynch's deeply knowledgeable study bridges the ideological divides in scholarly and public debate, including economists' emphases on markets and efficiency versus antiglobalization activists' concerns over inequality and social ills. By building a middle ground between micro and macro analysis and clarifying technical terminology, this concise and accessible book will be an invaluable reference for all readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia-Pacific region has emerged as a dominant player in trade and will continue to be an influential component of world trade and economics. This book presents an informative outlook on the various regional and trade agreements (RTAs) and their beneficial effects on bilateral trade. In particular, the authors concentrate on India and China, the two major rising powers, and the impact of exchange of information and sharing of resources between these two countries in wide-ranging areas. It provides an incisive analysis and a roundup of all major RTAs and also presents an overview of all major agreements between the countries involved, which might propel their trade numbers and influence future economic engagements. The book also discusses possible obstacles that are encountered during the implementation of RTAs and circumvention routes that can be taken to ensure the successful execution of the agreements. International trade agreements, such as General Agreements on Trade and Tariffs, which have revolutionized the trade dynamics by opening up new areas of trade and formulating specific guidelines for the member countries to adhere to during trade negotiations, are discussed. The book also provides new insights into some of the issues under negotiation, such as sensitive lists, trade, investment cooperation, and trade in services. The existing economic cooperation arrangements in the region as well as those that are at various stages of study and negotiations, empirical insights and policy suggestions are elucidated in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent trade initiatives suggest that there is renewed interest in forming tariff-free regional trading zones. Running concurrent with this move toward regional integration is the multilateral process of global trade liberalization. This text looks at the two issues. Chapter one examines the inherent conflict between the two main approaches to reducing barriers to trade - economic integration, and multilateralism. Chapter two provides a theoretical framework for evaluating the relative accomplishments of both regional trading blocs and multilateral free trade. Chapter three utilizes a number of theoretical constructs to evaluate the effects of regional trading arrangements, and discusses the trade history of the European Union. Chapter four provides an analysis of the trade effects of tariff reductions achieved under the GATT system, and chapter five provides recommendations for ensuring continued progress in multilateral tariff reductions under the banner of the World Trade Organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regionalism is once again being viewed as a solution to the major international economic problems of our times. Slow progress of the negotiations at the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) has led some economists to conclude that a division of the world into three trading blocs -- Europe, the Americas, and East Asia, is the fastest road to multilateral free trade. They argue that negotiations for free trade are far more likely to succeed when conducted among three parties rather than among 154. For many countries, the proliferation of nontariff barriers in the industrial world has made regional integration an attractive policy option. However, the experience with South-South integration has been discouraging, and some economists claim that any temptation to promote such schemes in the future should be resisted. As for North-North integration, it has been widely successful in Europe. Intraregional trade expanded greatly, but not at the expense of trade with non-partners, which also grew rapidly. And European integration has greatly diminished, if not eliminated, the possibility of future internal conflicts. Looking to the future, North-South integration holds much promise for developing countries. Regional arrangements of this type can solidify past reforms, guarantee future access to a large market, and stimulate growth via increased direct foreign investment, more intense competition and faster technological diffusion.
