Book excerpt: The last five to seven years have seen a major revision in our understanding of the geology of central Australia, with advancements in the field of geochronology redefining the geological framework and history of this area. Further work by the two geological surveys and the Australian National University suggests that in the eastern Arunta region, the Aileron Province can be divided into two sequences, the older (1820-1800 Ma) Strangways Metamorphic Complex and the younger (~1760 Ma) Oonagalabi Assemblage. One of the purposes of this field trip is to illustrate the characteristics of the Palaeoproterozoic basement and the overlying Neoproterozoic to Palaeozoic rocks, with emphasis on the role of modern geochronology in resolving the newly defined terrains.

Book excerpt: This report presents a summary of the regional petrologic & tectonic features of a 9,300 square kilometre area in the Grenville Province of south-east Ontario, and attempts to relate these features in space & time to known mineral deposits within the area. After an overview of previous research and description of the regional geological setting, the characteristics of the Middle Precambrian to Palaeozoic rocks found in the area are detailed. The final section summarizes the mineralization related to the various events recorded by the rocks of the area. This includes occurrences of base metals, uranium & other metallic mineralization, industrial minerals, and stone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jurassic Rossland Group in south-east British Columbia is a volcanic arc succession that contains a variety of deposits typical of volcanic arcs. This report focusses on deposits in the Group, particularly on those that have had recent exploration, and on the metallogeny of the Nelson-Rossland map area. The report first reviews the regional geology of the area and describes a number of type examples of mineral deposits in Rossland Group rocks & others in the area. These include carbonate-hosted deposits, volcanogenic massive sulphides, porphyry copper-gold deposits, skarns, and gold-quartz & polymetallic veins. The principal focus is on the deposits of the Rossland copper/gold mining camp, the second largest lode gold producing camp in the province. The regional geology around Rossland is summarized, the main deposit types are described, and a model for intrusive-related gold-sulphide veins is presented. Appendices include a table of mineral occurrences in the area, production data for the area's metallic deposits, a petrographic report, analyses of samples, reports on geochronological dating & isotope characterization, and fluid inclusion data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth as an Evolving Planetary System, Second Edition, explores key topics and questions relating to the evolution of the Earth's crust and mantle over the last four billion years. This updated edition features exciting new information on Earth and planetary evolution and examines how all subsystems in our planet—crust, mantle, core, atmosphere, oceans and life—have worked together and changed over time. It synthesizes data from the fields of oceanography, geophysics, planetology, and geochemistry to address Earth’s evolution. This volume consists of 10 chapters, including two new ones that deal with the Supercontinent Cycle and on Great Events in Earth history. There are also new and updated sections on Earth's thermal history, planetary volcanism, planetary crusts, the onset of plate tectonics, changing composition of the oceans and atmosphere, and paleoclimatic regimes. In addition, the book now includes new tomographic data tracking plume tails into the deep mantle. This book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, with a basic knowledge of geology, biology, chemistry, and physics. It also may serve as a reference tool for structural geologists and professionals in related disciplines who want to look at the Earth in a broader perspective. Kent Condie's corresponding interactive CD, Plate Tectonics and How the Earth Works, can be purchased from Tasa Graphic Arts here: http://www.tasagraphicarts.com/progptearth.html Two new chapters on the Supercontinent Cycle and on Great Events in Earth history New and updated sections on Earth's thermal history, planetary volcanism, planetary crusts, the onset of plate tectonics, changing composition of the oceans and atmosphere, and paleoclimatic regimes Also new in this Second Edition: the lower mantle and the role of the post-perovskite transition, the role of water in the mantle, new tomographic data tracking plume tails into the deep mantle, Euxinia in Proterozoic oceans, The Hadean, A crustal age gap at 2.4-2.2 Ga, and continental growth

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large igneous provinces (LIPs) are intraplate magmatic events, involving volumes of mainly mafic magma upwards of 100,000 km3, and often above 1 million km3. They are linked to continental break-up, global environmental catastrophes, regional uplift and a variety of ore deposit types. In this up-to-date, fascinating book, leading expert Richard E. Ernst explores all aspects of LIPs, beginning by introducing their definition and essential characteristics. Topics covered include continental and oceanic LIPs; their origins, structures, and geochemistry; geological and environmental effects; association with silicic, carbonatite and kimberlite magmatism; and analogues of LIPs in the Archean, and on other planets. The book concludes with an assessment of LIPs' influence on natural resources such as mineral deposits, petroleum and aquifers. This is a one-stop resource for researchers and graduate students in a wide range of disciplines, including tectonics, igneous petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, Earth history, and planetary geology, and for mining industry professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a final product of the International Geological Correlation Program (IGCP) Project 217, this volume brings together significant advances in the understanding of Proterozoic crustal evolution. This IGCP Project focussed on nine research objectives: 1) Comparison of Archean and Proterozoic supracrustal assemblages to more fully understand differences between Archean and post-Archean tectonic regimes; 2) To more fully understand the geochemical differences between Archean and post-Archean sediments and to evaluate the various factors that control sediment composition; 3) From combined U/Pb zircon and whole-rock Sm/Nd studies, to see if the apparent 2.4-2.0 continental crust "generation gap" is real; 4) To employ new techniques in the dating of individual zircons to more fully understand Proterozoic tectonic history and the role of crustal reworking; 5) From trace element ratios and Nd isotopic data from basalts, to better understand Proterozoic mantle evolution; 6) To encourage more detailed studies of the anorogenic granite-anorthosite association to better understand its origin and significance in terms of crustal evolution; 7) From combined Nd, Pb, and Sr isotopic data, to more precisely estimate the amount of new continental crust formed during the Proterozoic; 8) To encourage joint P-T and geochronological studies of Proterozoic and high-grade terranes to better understand Proterozoic orogenesis: and 9) To try and understand why hydrothermal precious metal deposits are relatively rare in the Proterozoic compared to both the Archean and the Phanerozoic. The book should be of interest to professionals in the geosciences (especially geochemists, petrologists and structural geologists) and graduate students in the same fields.
