Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Regimental Colors in the War of the Revolution The following pages and illustrations are the result of the study made by me in my leisure hours during the past winter, while preparing a paper on the subject of "Regimental Colors in the War of the Revolution," which I read before the New York Historical Society on February 5, 1907, and again before the Society of the Sons of the Revolution in New York on April 19, 1907. The subject is not one in which very many people are interested, and yet I believe that the romance surrounding an old regimental color, as well as the historic and, possibly, the artistic interest in some of the flags shown on the following plates, will justify the printing of these pages. Most of the plates are from photographs of the flags; a few are from water-colors made by Mrs. Davis and myself, from which, as well as from the photographs, lantern slides were made to illustrate the paper when read. It will be observed that for flags which were carried in the Revolution for several years, nearly all of our colors are in remarkably fine condition. Since I first read the paper, I have obtained a good deal of information, which I have here added to my original paper. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - Vibrant color paintings illustrate soldiers and battles of the war - Color photos of seldom-seen period artifacts such as uniforms, weapons, and other equipment In this collection, renowned artist Don Troiani teams up with leading artifact historian James L. Kochan to present the American Revolution as it has existed only in our imaginations: in living color. From Bunker Hill to Yorktown, from Washington to Cornwallis, from the Minute Men to the Black Watch, these pages are packed with scenes of grand action and great characters, recreated in the vivid blues and reds that defined the Revolutionary era. Troiani's depictions of these legendary fife-and-drum soldiers are based on firsthand accounts and, wherever possible, surviving artifacts. Scores of color photographs of these objects--many of them from private collections and seen here for the very first time--accompany the paintings. Items range from muskets and beautifully ornate swords to more unique pieces such as badges with unit insignia or patriotic slogans and Baron von Steuben's liquor chest.More than just a glimpse into a world long past, this is the closest the modern reader can get to experiencing the Revolutionary War firsthand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonel Moses Hazen’s 2nd Canadian Regiment was one of the first “national” regiments in the American army. Created by the Continental Congress, it drew members from Canada, eleven states, and foreign forces. “Congress’s Own” was among the most culturally, ethnically, and regionally diverse of the Continental Army’s regiments—a distinction that makes it an apt reflection of the union that was struggling to create a nation. The 2nd Canadian, like the larger army, represented and pushed the transition from a colonial, continental alliance to a national association. The problems the regiment raised and encountered underscored the complications of managing a confederation of states and troops. In this enterprising study of an intriguing and at times “infernal” regiment, Holly A. Mayer marshals personal and official accounts—from the letters and journals of Continentals and congressmen to the pension applications of veterans and their widows—to reveal what the personal passions, hardships, and accommodations of the 2nd Canadian can tell us about the greater military and civil dynamics of the American Revolution. Congress’s Own follows congressmen, commanders, and soldiers through the Revolutionary War as the regiment’s story shifts from tents and trenches to the halls of power and back. Interweaving insights from borderlands and community studies with military history, Mayer tracks key battles and traces debates that raged within the Revolution’s military and political borderlands wherein subjects became rebels, soldiers, and citizens. Her book offers fresh, vivid accounts of the Revolution that disclose how “Congress’s Own” regiment embodied the dreams, diversity, and divisions within and between the Continental Army, Congress, and the emergent union of states during the War for American Independence.

This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Army Uniforms identifies the uniforms of each regiment of cavalry and infantry from 1751 to 1783, including those worn during the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence. This lavishly illustrated book shows how the cut and colouring of the uniforms of the officers, the NCOs and the private soldiers changed over the course of more than thirty years. The survey is divided into four parts. Part one looks at the commonalities of cavalry uniforms and focuses on the uniforms that were appropriate to each regiment. Headwear and horse furniture are also considered. Part two contains a wealth of full-colour plates detailing the uniforms of the Household Cavalry, the Heavy Cavalry and Light Cavalry. Parts three and four cover infantry uniforms, including those of the regiments of Foot Guards, Infant of the Line, Fusiliers and Highland regiments.--Publisher description.
