Download or read book REFRACTORY METALS AN ASSESSMENT. written by Harris M. BURTE and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The refractory metals (columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, tungsten) and their alloys offer attractive potential as metallic materials for high temperature applications. Their general characteristics (e.g., high melting point, ductile-brittle transition, oxidation characteristics) are discussed in relation to a critical assessment of the feasibility of their use in current and future aerospace applications. Coatings for oxidation protection, fabrication, and joining, are shown to be areas of technology limiting the use of these materials, and therefore requiring further efforts. In spite of the current limitations, the high temperature capability is being utilized and for some future applications, improvements in strength, ductility, and coating characteristics are expected to increase reliability and capability. This book was released on 1965 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third revision of recommended test methods for refractory metal sheet published by the Materials Advisory Board Refractory Metals Sheet Rolling Panel. The Panel's objective was to provide a standard basis for the test evaluation of sheet materials produced under various Department of Defense development programs. A subpanel was appointed for this purpose. After a thorough canvas of prominent suppliers and users of refractory sheet metals, the first recommendations were published in September 1961 as MAB-176-M to define common tensile, creep-rupture, bend, and thermal properties tests. Subsequently, as the Department of Defense programs progressed, more specialized tests became necessary to evaluate fabrication characteristics and to provide preliminary design data. Again, after discussion with principal organizations engaged in direct applications, a revised edition was published April 22, 1963, as MAB-192-M. Since that time, criticisms and comments have been reviewed by the subpanel with qualified individuals representing governmental and commercial laboratories. The present edition is based upon these reviews. Changes have been made in the tests described in Sections 1 through 6. The tests in Sections 7 through 15 are unchanged from Report 192-M. In preparing these recommendations, the subpanel has deferred where possible to prominent ASTM standards. (Author).
Book Synopsis The Effects of Heat-treating and Testing Environments on the Properties of Refractory Metals by : F. F. Schmidt
Download or read book The Effects of Heat-treating and Testing Environments on the Properties of Refractory Metals written by F. F. Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on the effects of heat-treating and testing environments for the refractory metals have been limited primarily to the unalloyed metals and a few alloys of columbium and molybdenum. Most of this work has relied on compositional changes as a means of assesing the effects of various environments on these materials. It has been shown that all of these materials are subject to contamination or purification in various test environments. The residual gases H2, CO(or N2), and H20, constitute the major sources of contamination when testing columbium and tantalum materials in vacua. Under the same conditions, molybdenum and molybdenum alloys containing carbon and reactive-metal additions are subject to serious decarburization. Nonreactive gaseous atmospheres also cause serious changes in material chemistry, since small quantities of noxious gases are contained in the atmosphere. Several promising methods of circumventing material chemistry changes during various longtime, high-temperature exposures are being used and/or evaluated. (Author).

Download or read book Evaluation of Refractory Metal Sheet Alloys written by George E. Gazza and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five columbium base alloys, three tantalum base alloys, and two molybdenum base alloys have been evaluated by the U.S. Army Materials Research Agency. Mechanical properties were determined by tensile testing at room temperature and elevated temperatures, stress rupture testing, and bend testing of base metal specimens and welded specimens. The properties of the alloys are compared with target requirements established by the Alloy Requirements and Selection Group, Materials Advisory Board. Significant progress in refractory metal sheet development is demonstrated by a comparison of the test data with target properties. In general, the properties of the alloys approached or exceeded the target requirements. (Author).

Download or read book Refractory Tube Test Chamber and Materials Evaluation Program written by S. Greenfield and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of the program were to develop a test apparatus capable of rapidly and economically evaluating refractory metal tubes under rocket thrust chamber environments, and to evaluate selected refractory metals in tube form with the test apparatus. The program was divided into two phases. Phase I provided a design, fabrication, and test checkout of a test thrust chamber under conditions of chamber pressure and mixture ratio which provided peak heat fluxes approaching 50 Btu/sq. in.-sec for a minimum of 20 seconds. Phase II consisted of an experimental evaluation of selected refractory metals, in tube form, over a range of chamber pressures and mixture ratios typical of rocket engine operation, using the propellant combination N2O4/N2H4-UDMH(50-50). Nine refractory alloys were tested, representing columbium, tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum classes of materials. (Author).
Book Synopsis Refractory Metal Alloys Metallurgy and Technology by : I. Machlin

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication documents Proceedings of the Symposium on Metal lurgy and Technology of Refractory Metal Alloys, held in Washington, D.C. at the Washington Hilton Hotel on April 25-26, 1968, under sponsorship of the Refractory Metals Committee, Institute of Metals Division, of the Metallurgical Society of AIME, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Symposium presented critical reviews of selected topics in refractory metal alloys, thereby contributing to an in-depth understanding of the state-of-the-art, and establishing a base line for further research, development, and application. This Symposium is fifth in a series of conferences on refractory metals, sponsored by the Metallurgical Society of AlME. Publications issuing from the conferences are valuable technical and historical source books, tracing the evolution of refractory metals from early laboratory alloying studies to their present status as useful engineering materials. Refractory metals are arbitrarily defined by melting point. A 0 melting temperature of over 3500 F was selected as the minimum for this Symposium, thus excluding chromium and vanadium, which logically could be treated with other refractory metals in Groups VA and VIA of the periodic table. The Refractory Metals Committee is planning reviews of chromium and vanadium in subsequent conferences.
