Book Synopsis Rediscoveries and Reformulations by : Hayward R. Alker
Download or read book Rediscoveries and Reformulations written by Hayward R. Alker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-05-30 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a distinctive and rich conception of methodology within international studies. From a rereading of the works of leading Western thinkers about international studies, Hayward Alker rediscovers a 'neo-Classical' conception of international relations which is both humanistic and scientific. He draws on the work of classical authors such as Aristotle and Thucydides; modern writers like Machiavelli, Vico, Marx, Weber, Deutsch and Bull; and post-modern writers like Havel, Connolly and Toulmin. The central challenge addressed is how to integrate 'positivist' or 'falsificationist' research styles within humanistic or interpretive ones. The author argues that appropriate, philosophically informed reformulations of conventional statistical and game-theoretic analyses are possible, and describes a number of humanistic methodologies for international relations, including argumentation analysis, narrative modeling, computational models of political understanding and reconstructive analysis.
Book Synopsis Language in Interaction by : Inbal Arnon
Download or read book Language in Interaction written by Inbal Arnon and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding how communicative goals impact and drive the learning process has been a long-standing issue in the field of language acquisition. Recent years have seen renewed interest in the social and pragmatic aspects of language learning: the way interaction shapes what and how children learn. In this volume, we bring together researchers working on interaction in different domains to present a cohesive overview of ongoing interactional research. The studies address the diversity of the environments children learn in; the role of para-linguistic information; the pragmatic forces driving language learning; and the way communicative pressures impact language use and change. Using observational, empirical and computational findings, this volume highlights the effect of interpersonal communication on what children hear and what they learn. This anthology is inspired by and dedicated to Prof. Eve V. Clark – a pioneer in all matters related to language acquisition – and a major force in establishing interaction and communication as crucial aspects of language learning.

Book Synopsis Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems III by : Abdelkader Hameurlain
Download or read book Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems III written by Abdelkader Hameurlain and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The LNCS journal Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems focuses on data management, knowledge discovery, and knowledge processing, which are core and hot topics in computer science. Since the 1990s, the Internet has become the main driving force behind application development in all domains. An increase in the demand for resource sharing across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolution of data- and knowledge-management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications providing high scalability. Current decentralized systems still focus on data and knowledge as their main resource. Feasibility of these systems relies basically on P2P (peer-to-peer) techniques and the support of agent systems with scaling and decentralized control. Synergy between Grids, P2P systems, and agent technologies is the key to data- and knowledge-centered systems in large-scale environments. This, the third issue of Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems, contains two kinds of papers: Firstly, a selection of the best papers from the third International Conference on Data Management in Grid and Peer-to-Peer Systems, Globe 2010, and secondly, a selection of 6 papers from the 18 papers submitted in response to the call for papers for this issue. The topics covered by this special issue include replication, the semantic web, information retrieval, data storage, source selection, and large-scale distributed applications.

Book Synopsis Eyetracking and Applied Linguistics by : Silvia Hansen-Schirra
Download or read book Eyetracking and Applied Linguistics written by Silvia Hansen-Schirra and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eyetracking has become a powerful tool in scientific research and has finally found its way into disciplines such as applied linguistics and translation studies, paving the way for new insights and challenges in these fields. The aim of the first International Conference on Eyetracking and Applied Linguistics (ICEAL) was to bring together researchers who use eyetracking to empirically answer their research questions. It was intended to bridge the gaps between applied linguistics, translation studies, cognitive science and computational linguistics on the one hand and to further encourage innovative research methodologies and data triangulation on the other hand. These challenges are also addressed in this proceedings volume: While the studies described in the volume deal with a wide range of topics, they all agree on eyetracking as an appropriate methodology in empirical research.
Book Synopsis Language Regulation in English as a Lingua Franca by : Niina Hynninen

This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language regulation has often been approached from a top-down policy perspective, whereas this book examines regulatory practices employed by speakers in interaction. With its ethnographically informed focus on language regulation in academic English as a lingua franca (ELF), the book is a timely contribution to debates about what counts as acceptable English in ELF contexts, who can act as language expert, and when regulation is needed.
Download or read book ECAI 2006 written by G. Brewka and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006-08-10 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1956, John McCarthy organized the famous Dartmouth Conference which is now commonly viewed as the founding event for the field of Artificial Intelligence. During the last 50 years, AI has seen a tremendous development and is now a well-established scientific discipline all over the world. Also in Europe AI is in excellent shape, as witnessed by the large number of high quality papers in this publication. In comparison with ECAI 2004, there’s a strong increase in the relative number of submissions from Distributed AI / Agents and Cognitive Modelling. Knowledge Representation & Reasoning is traditionally strong in Europe and remains the biggest area of ECAI-06. One reason the figures for Case-Based Reasoning are rather low is that much of the high quality work in this area has found its way into prestigious applications and is thus represented under the heading of PAIS.

Book Synopsis Child L2 Writers by : Amparo Lázaro-Ibarrola
Download or read book Child L2 Writers written by Amparo Lázaro-Ibarrola and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on L2 writing tasks with child learners have broken through several barriers in the past few years. Although long considered a solitary task, writing is now regularly done in collaborative pairs and groups as well. New and more comprehensive writing and feedback strategies have been implemented and task repetition has made its way from oral into writing tasks. Finally, research analyses of linguistic outcomes have been complemented by measures of task motivation. Drawing on knowledge from the fields of psychology, education and SLA, this book includes a comprehensive and interdisciplinary analysis of this body of research. It pinpoints the specificity of writing tasks for child L2 learners, identifies the research gaps that pave the way for future research, and offers a guide for teachers who wish to implement writing tasks with young language learners. In sum, this book demonstrates that child L2 writing constitutes a new field of inquiry and attempts to give child L2 writers a room of their own.
