Book excerpt: To investigate the reflective crack-propagation behavior and provide control techniques for asphalt pavements widening, the finite-element models were built to simulate the widened asphalt pavement with a latent joint. The developed finite-element model considered the influence factors, including the loading modes (i.e., the symmetrical and unsymmetrical loading modes), the thickness and modulus of the asphalt concrete surface, the modulus of the new and existing stabilized bases, and the sheet stiffness of the reinforced geosynthetic. The finite-element simulation results show that increasing the thickness or reducing the modulus of the asphalt concrete surface effectively delays the propagation speed of the reflective cracks. The cracking potential reaches the minimum when the new and existing bases have a uniform modulus. Additionally, geosynthetic reinforcement across the joints significantly reduces the stress concentration around the crack tip and slows down the propagation of the reflective cracks. These benefits become greater when increasing the sheet stiffness of the geosynthetic. Finally, an experimental study was conducted to investigate the influence of the types of the asphalt overlay and the geosynthetic reinforcement on the reflective crack-propagation behavior. The experimental results indicate that the geosynthetic-reinforced structure with a lower modulus of the asphalt concrete surface significantly increases the fatigue life of widened pavements, and the polypropylene geotextile performs better than the glass-fiber grid in terms of the extension of the fatigue life.

Book excerpt: The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) spends two million dollars annually on reflective crack control treatments; however, their cost-effectiveness has never before been reliably determined. The study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of IDOT reflective crack control system "A", which consists of a non-woven, polypropylene paving fabric, placed either in strips longitudinally over lane-widening joints or over the entire pavement ("area" treatment). Performance of 52 projects across Illinois was assessed through crack mapping and from distress and serviceability data in IDOT's Condition Rating Survey (CRS) database. Comparisons of measured reflective cracking in treated and control sections revealed that system "A" retards longitudinal reflective widening crack development, but does not significantly retard transverse reflective cracking. However, both strip and area applications of these fabric treatments appeared to improve overall pavement serviceability, and were estimated to increase rehabilitation life spans by 1.1 and 3.6 years, respectively. Life-cycle cost analyses (LCCA) found strip and area reflective crack control treatments to be marginally cost effective, where a 4.5% reduction in life-cycle costs was estimated, for medium-sized projects [between 1 and 6 mi (1.6 and 9.7 km) of two-lane road]. Small projects [under 1 mi (1.6 km) of two-lane road] showed a breakeven level of cost-effectiveness, while large projects [over 6 mi (9.7 km) of two-lane road] showed a 6.2% savings in life-cycle costs. Permeability testing of field cores taken over transverse joints showed that waterproofing benefits can exist after reflective crack appearance, which explains why serviceability was improved with area treatment even though crack development was not retarded. Guidelines for establishing and monitoring future experimental sections were also developed.

Book excerpt: Reflective cracking due to shrinkage and brittleness in asphalt pavements can seriously degrade an asphalt overlay before it is near its design life. Geosynthetics have been used to impede the reflection of existing transverse cracking to the new overlay. The geosynthetics are intended to minimize the tension transferred to the overlay from the existing pavement. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) installed a test section consisting of 120 transverse cracks treated with five different geosynthetic types, 22 transverse cracks treated with crack filling only and a control section of 20 untreated transverse cracks. The test and control sections were constructed over an open-graded asphalt concrete pavement. The overlay was also an open-graded mix. The 140 transverse crack section is located on US Highway 97 between Milepoint 213.58 and Milepoint 217.64.

Book excerpt: This book presents the latest advances in research to analyze mechanical damage and its detection in multilayer systems. The contents are linked to the Rilem TC241 - MCD scientific activities and the proceedings of the 8th RILEM International Conference on Mechanisms of Cracking and Debonding in Pavements (MCD2016). MCD2016 was hosted by Ifsttar and took place in Nantes, France, on June 7-9, 2016. In their lifetime, pavements undergo degradation due to different mechanisms of which cracking is among the most important ones. The damage and the fracture behavior of all its material layers as well as interfaces must be understood. In that field, the research activities aims to develop a deeper fundamental understanding of the mechanisms responsible for cracking and debonding in asphalt concrete and composite (e.g. asphalt overlays placed on PCC or thin cement concrete overlay placed on asphalt layer) pavement systems.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an evaluation of concrete slab fracturing techniques as a means of arresting or retarding reflective cracking through asphalt overlays placed on severely distressed portland cement concrete pavement. The study involved monitoring the performance of five pavement rehabilitation projects over a period of up to 8 years. Two of the projects were originally constructed of jointed plain (unreinforced) concrete, and the other three consisted of jointed reinforced concrete pavement. The test sections were fractured with a guillotine drop hammer and then seated with a 50-ton pneumatic tire roller. For comparative purposes, control sections, which were not fractured prior to placement of the asphalt overlay, were constructed just beyond the bounds of three of the fractured test sections. Detailed visual condition surveys were conducted annually at all sites. For each survey, the number of occurrences of reflective cracks that formed in fractured sections was directly compared to the number of cracks observed in the control sections to quantify the tendency of fracturing to retard or arrest the formation of reflective cracks. The results of this study show that fracturing and seating distressed concrete pavements appear to be an effective means of retarding the formation of reflective cracking through asphalt overlays on jointed, unreinforced pavements. In the case of reinforced pavements, however, the fracturing technique was somewhat less successful in that the formation of reflective cracks appeared to be delayed for only about 3 years. Beyond that point in time, the fractured reinforced sections exhibited approximately the same amount of reflective cracking as the control section. The researcher concludes that any observed benefit in terms of extended pavement service life or enhanced ride quality resulting from even a slight delay in reflective crack propagation would likely offset the rather nominal cost of the fracturing and seating operation itself.

Book excerpt: Premature cracking in asphalt pavements and overlays continues to shorten pavement lifecycles and creates significant economic and environmental burden. In response, RILEM Technical Committee TC 241-MCD on Mechanisms of Cracking and Debonding in Asphalt and Composite Pavements has conducted a State-of-the-Art Review (STAR), as detailed in this comprehensive book. Cutting-edge research performed by RILEM members and their international partners is presented, along with summaries of open research questions and recommendations for future research. This book is organized according to the theme areas of TC 241-MCD - i.e., fracture in the asphalt bulk material, interface debonding behaviour, and advanced measurement systems. This STAR is expected to serve as a long term reference for researchers and practitioners, as it contributes to a deeper fundamental understanding of the mechanisms behind cracking and debonding in asphalt concrete and composite pavement systems.

Book excerpt: In the recent past, new materials, laboratory and in-situ testing methods and construction techniques have been introduced. In addition, modern computational techniques such as the finite element method enable the utilization of sophisticated constitutive models for realistic model-based predictions of the response of pavements. The 7th RILEM International Conference on Cracking of Pavements provided an international forum for the exchange of ideas, information and knowledge amongst experts involved in computational analysis, material production, experimental characterization, design and construction of pavements. All submitted contributions were subjected to an exhaustive refereed peer review procedure by the Scientific Committee, the Editors and a large group of international experts in the topic. On the basis of their recommendations, 129 contributions which best suited the goals and the objectives of the Conference were chosen for presentation and inclusion in the Proceedings. The strong message that emanates from the accepted contributions is that, by accounting for the idiosyncrasies of the response of pavement engineering materials, modern sophisticated constitutive models in combination with new experimental material characterization and construction techniques provide a powerful arsenal for understanding and designing against the mechanisms and the processes causing cracking and pavement response deterioration. As such they enable the adoption of truly "mechanistic" design methodologies. The papers represent the following topics: Laboratory evaluation of asphalt concrete cracking potential; Pavement cracking detection; Field investigation of pavement cracking; Pavement cracking modeling response, crack analysis and damage prediction; Performance of concrete pavements and white toppings; Fatigue cracking and damage characterization of asphalt concrete; Evaluation of the effectiveness of asphalt concrete modification; Crack growth parameters and mechanisms; Evaluation, quantification and modeling of asphalt healing properties; Reinforcement and interlayer systems for crack mitigation; Thermal and low temperature cracking of pavements; and Cracking propensity of WMA and recycled asphalts.

Book excerpt: When reinforcing existing cracked asphalt pavements, the design and evaluation of the durability of the reinforced structure are quite different from those of a new pavement generally based on fatigue criteria deduced from stress and strain fields computed for the undamaged pavement. For the design of reinforcement solutions, the presence of cracks and their propagation must be considered explicitly. To move in this direction, the present article aims at improving the understanding of bottom-up crack propagation in asphalt pavements. Some investigations relying on the interpretation of an accelerated full-scale fatigue test are presented as well as the numerical analysis of this test through the theory of linear elastic fracture mechanics and the Paris law. The tested pavement section is composed of four layers. The two uppermost layers are made of asphalt concrete (AC) materials whose modulus and fatigue performances are different. The pavement is subjected to repeated loads applied by the Fatigue du Béton Armé Continu (FABAC) traffic simulator of the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks (IFSTTAR), and the development of cracking in the AC layers is monitored using embedded instrumentation and Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) test campaigns. To better control the crack pattern that develops during the fatigue test, an artificial flaw (metal angle) is purposely placed at the bottom of the AC layers (in the transverse direction to the moving loads) to localize the initiation of cracking. A bottom-up crack is supposed to grow vertically from this defect in the AC layers. This is effectively detected and followed by the experimental measurements, which are combined to model for the analysis of the test. Finally, the kinetics of crack growth deduced from the Accelerated Pavement Test (APT) results and those computed using the Paris law calibrated from fatigue tests performed in the laboratory are compared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflective cracks form in pavements when hot-mix asphalt (HMA) overlays are placed over jointed and/or severely cracked rigid and flexible pavements. In the first part of the research, survival analysis was conducted to identify the most appropriate rehabilitation method for composite pavements and to evaluate the influence of different factors on reflective crack development. Four rehabilitation methods, including mill and fill, overlay, heater scarification (SCR), and rubblization, were analyzed using three performance indicators: reflective cracking, international roughness index (IRI), and pavement condition index (PCI). It was found that rubblization can significantly retard reflective cracking development compared to the other three methods. No significant difference for PCI was seen among the four rehabilitation methods. Heater scarification showed the lowest survival probability for both reflective cracking and IRI, while an overlay resulted in the poorest overall pavement condition based on PCI. In addition, traffic level was found not to be a significant factor for reflective cracking development. An increase in overlay thickness can significantly delay the propagation of reflective cracking for all four treatments. Soil types in rubblization pavement sites were assessed, and no close relationship was found between rubblized pavement performance and subgrade soil condition. In the second part of the research, the study objective was to evaluate the modulus and performance of four reflective cracking treatments: full rubblization, modified rubblization, crack and seat, and rock interlayer. A total of 16 pavement sites were tested by the surface wave method (SWM), and in the first four sites both falling weight deflectometer (FWD) and SWM were conducted for a preliminary analysis. The SWM gave close concrete layer moduli compared to the FWD moduli on a conventional composite pavement. However, the SWM provided higher moduli for the rubblized concrete layer. After the preliminary analysis, another 12 pavement sites were tested by the SWM. The results showed that the crack and seat method provided the highest moduli, followed by the modified rubblization method. The full rubblization and the rock interlayer methods gave similar, but lower, moduli. Pavement performance surveys were also conducted during the field study. In general, none of the pavement sites had rutting problems. The conventional composite pavement site had the largest amount of reflective cracking. A moderate amount of reflective cracking was observed for the two pavement sites with full rubblization. Pavements with the rock interlayer and modified rubblization treatments had much less reflective cracking. It is recommended that use of the modified rubblization and rock interlayer treatments for reflective cracking mitigation are best.
