Book excerpt: Muscular contraction provides one of the most fascinating topics for a biophysicist to study. Although muscle comprises a molecular machine whereby chemical energy is converted to mechanical work, its action in producing force is something that is readily observable in everyday life, a feature that does not apply to most other structures of biophysical inter est. In addition, muscle is so beautifully organized at the microscopic level that those important structural probes, electron microscopy (with the associated image analysis methods) and X-ray diffraction, have pro vided a wealth of information about the arrangements of the constituent proteins in a variety of muscle types. But, despite all this, the answer to the question "How does muscle work?" is still uncertain, especially with regard to the molecular events by which force is actually generated, and the question remains one of the major unsolved problems in biology. With this problem in mind, this book has been written to collect together the available evidence on the structures of the muscle fila ments and on their arrangements in different muscle cells, to extract the common structural features of these cells, and thus to attempt to define a possible series of mechanical steps that will describe at molecular resolu tion the process by which force is generated. The book cannot be considered to be an introductory text; in fact, it presents a very detailed account of muscle structure as gleaned mainly from electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction.

Book excerpt: Reflections on Biochemistry: In Honour of Severo Ochoa offers reflections on a wide range of topics relating to biochemistry, including energy metabolism, lipids and saccharides, regulation, nucleic acids and the genetic code, protein biosynthesis, and cell biology. The essays celebrate Severo Ochoa's outstanding contributions to biochemistry spanning nearly half a century. This book is comprised of 47 chapters and begins with a biography of Ochoa and his scientific work in the field of biochemistry, particularly his research on intermediary metabolism, RNA synthesis, and the genetic code. The discussion then turns to energy metabolism, photosynthesis, and fermentation, touching on topics such as the role of lactic acid in the development of biochemistry and the biosynthesis of cell components from acetate. The next section is devoted to lipids, saccharides, and cell walls and includes chapters that deal with biotin, sulfur biochemistry, and dipicolinic acid. Subsequent chapters explore hormonal regulation of adipose tissue lipolysis; the structural relationship between genes and enzymes; bacteriophages, colicins, and ribosomes; and cell biology and neurobiology. This monograph will be of interest to biochemists and students of biochemistry.

Troccoli first details a childhood filled with uncertainty and self-doubt after his family moved from New York to Florida and then provides an intriguing glimpse into the magical moment when his hands first wrapped around a barbell, instigating his lifelong love for bodybuilding. As Troccoli moves from one competition to the nextslowly transforming his body from frail to stronghe shares how he learned the value of persistence, values, and optimism despite facing disappointment, uncertainty, and heartache. Trocollis moving story of how he endured great hardships and failures on his journey to becoming a bodybuilding champion, firefighter, husband, and father will inspire you to stand taller, believe deeper, and learn to conquer the greatest obstacle to reaching your destinyyourself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is intended to cover research in the field of muscle morphology since publication of the previous edition by Haggquist in 1956. The development of new techniques, coupled with an intensified interest in muscle, has resulted in a vast literature which no single person could review, especially within the limitations of one volume. When I accepted the flattering offer to write a new edition, I quickly abandoned any hope of a comprehensive review. Instead, I tried to consider, within my limits, those lines of research which I believe to be important for the understanding of mammalian and ultimately human muscles under normal, experimental, and pathological conditions. It would be naive to suggest that muscle can be adequately described in purely morphologi cal aspects; I would characterize the results of my effort as "muscle as seen with the eyes of a morphologist". It gives me pleasure to acknowledge the help of several colleagues who read and commented on drafts of individual chapters: Dr. Brenda Eisenberg, Chicago; Dr. Else Nygaard, Copenhagen; Dr. Stefano Schiaffino, Padova; Dr. Michael Sjostrom, Umea; Dr. Lars~Erik Thornell, Umea. None of these individ uals can be held responsible for any error or obscurity that persists. Indeed, without their assistance there would have been more. I also thank those col leagues who allowed me to include their published and unpublished material; their names, and also those of the publishers who kindly granted copyright permission, are given in the individual figure captions.

Book excerpt: Is love the place where psychological observation and spiritual wisdom about healing meet? If love is associated with healing of all sorts, how do I more consciously set about to grow in love, seeking healing for myself and for my neighbours, community and world? How do I encourage others in their journeys into love? Drawing on a broad Christian heritage, a deep respect for the insights of other religious and spiritual traditions and two decades of work in welfare and clinical settings, psychologist Sharon Southwell encourages spiritual seekers of all backgrounds to consider these questions for themselves. Structured in 52 Reflections, each followed by 'Invitations', The Life of Love invites you to grow in love by embracing life-giving connection to yourself, to others, your community, to art, nature and to your ultimate context, whether you experience this as God or as some other immanent or transcendent spiritual connection.
