Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Ruth Carolyn Spies-Laudon. Born in 1949 to Bud and Flossie Spies (Wayne and Florence) and I have one sibling, Danny Spies. I lived in a berg called Hinton, Iowa with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. I graduated from college with a major in Spanish, minors in Psychology and Sociology with 10 hours in Christian religious classes. I have been married to my soul mate and husband for 32 years. We have no children but we have many nieces and nephews, and now many many great nieces and nephews which have blessed our lives. I have written some poetry as a child and through the years but in March 2005 I was anointed by the Lord to write Christian poetry (some whimsical) and have written over 400 poems. I’ve selected what I felt were the best in this book, Reflections of Ruth. I enjoy writing poetry and I really feel that I am the liaison between God and the paper that people read. I also immensely enjoy taking pictures of natures' rainbows, trees, flowers, lakes, barns, people — everything. I then collage my poetry with my photography as presents to friends and family. May all who read the pages of this book find that they are loved by our Heavenly Father. I find it soothing to be able to write about the Lord and all the blessings He has bestowed upon me.

Mary. . .for when God asks you to do something outside of your comfort zone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively commentary encompasses four major books focusing on women in the Hebrew Bible and Apocrypha. Each section in the volume addresses the biblical text in detail, and draws connections from the world of ancient audiences to that of present-day readers. Wolfe's research is motivated by the usual inquiries of biblical scholarship, as well as the questions raised by the many church Bible study groups she has taught. Clergy and laity, students and scholars will benefit from these contemporarily relevant reflections on Ruth, Esther, Song of Songs and Judith. Ruth: The foreign widow who sneaks onto the nighttime threshing floor to find survival for herself and her devastated mother-in-law. Esther: The Jewish orphan-turned-queen who turns Persian banqueting on its head in an effort to defend her people. Song of Songs: The proud and alluring lover who claims her sexuality as her own and joyfully shares it with her beloved. Judith: The pious and beautiful widow who lets the enemy commander's appetite become his downfall in order to save her besieged city. This volume is an opportunity to engage these women's suspense-filled stories, which have sustained faith communities since ancient times. ________ Lisa Wolfe is also the author of a DVD Bible study series "Uppity Women of the Bible" (Living the Questions, 2010), which is a companion to this book.To purchase a copy of the DVD series, please visit the following link at Living the Questions: http://www.livingthequestions.com/xcart/home.php?cat=461

Book excerpt: One of Israel’s most celebrated novelists—the acclaimed author of A Pigeon and a Boy—gives us a story of village love and vengeance in the early days of British Palestine that is still being played out two generations later. “In the year 1930 three farmers committed suicide here . . . but contrary to the chronicles of our committee and the conclusions of the British policeman, the people of the moshava knew that only two of the suicides had actually taken their own lives, whereas the third suicide had been murdered.” This is the contention of Ruta Tavori, a high school teacher and independent thinker in this small farming community who is writing seventy years later about that murder, about two charismatic men she loves and is trying to forgive—her grandfather and her husband—and about her son, whom she mourns and misses. In a story rich with the grit, humor, and near-magical evocation of Israeli rural life for which Meir Shalev is beloved by readers, Ruta weaves a tale of friendship between men, and of love and betrayal, which carries us from British Palestine to present-day Israel, where forgiveness, atonement, and understanding can finally happen.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Reflections on the Book of Ruth The discourses that make up the little volume before us were prepared by a well-known Lutheran pastor for the members of his own congregation. They are based on continuous sections of the Book of Ruth; and they gain not a little advantage from the fact that they have for their foundation a por tion of the Divine word so full of interest and so rich in material for useful instruction. A masterly discourse must have a great subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
