He knows a great deal about a great many things and something about almost everything else! This new volume of his musings will enrich anyone blessed enough to read it. Joseph Pearce, Author, Biographer of C.S. Lewis, J.R. Tolkien, Oscar Wilde, Solzhenitsyn, Chesterton, others Writer in Residence, Ave Maria University Many thanks to Dr. Henry Zeiter for collecting and sharing insights gathered over many years. I am amazed at the variety ranging from intensely personal reflections on to struggles of daily life to impressive literary, philosophical, and medical analyses. I especially recommend his essay on James Joyce; it is written with real feeling for a tortured soul Brian T. Kelly, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy, Mathematics and Science, Dean of Thomas Aquinas College, Santa, Paula, California Dr. Zeiter has lived intensely, and experienced the whole ride on the emotional rollercoaster. He has observed much, learned some, and reflected a lot on life. We can learn from him.and there is a great connection between learning and fully living. There is a memorable line in the movie The Shawshank Redemption: Get busy livingor get busy dying Henry Zeiter will certainly help you get busy living. Read his material slowly. Taste it, digest it in small bites, and reflect on it. That way you can enjoy the meal and absorb it in your own way. Dr. J. Mitchell Perry, JM Perry Learning Center, Ventura, California

And in fact, the most securely established terminology is found in a field that has experienced a significant revival in recent years: ekphrasis. The literary topos through which a poem (or any other text) addresses itself to the visual arts has received much attention in recent years and been subjected to intense scrutiny."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Germany and Europe 1919-1939 by : John Hiden
Download or read book Germany and Europe 1919-1939 written by John Hiden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only short study in English to survey Germany's foreign policy from a German viewpoint across the entire inter-war period. The approach, which sets Germany in her full European context, is not narrowly diplomatic; and it gives as much attention to the Weimar years of the 1920s as it gives to the more familiar story of Germany's international relations under the Third Reich. John Hiden has now thoroughly revised his text to take account of new scholarship since the book first appeared in 1977.

Book excerpt: Examines the lure of mountains in German literature, philosophy, film, music, and culture from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. Mountains have always stirred the human imagination, playing a crucial role in the cultural evolution of peoples around the globe and becoming infused with meaning in the process. Beyond their geographical-geological significance, mountains affect the topography of the mind, whether as objects of peril or attraction, of spiritual enlightenment or existential fulfillment, of philosophical contemplation or aesthetic inspiration. This volume challenges the oversimplified assumption that human interaction with mountains is a distinctly modern development, one that began with the empowerment of the individual in the wake of Enlightenment rationalism and Romantic subjectivity. These essays by European and North American scholars examine the lure of mountains in German literature, philosophy, film, music, and culture from the Middle Ages to the present, with a focus on the interaction between humans and the alpineenvironment. The contributors consider mountains not as mere symbolic tropes or literary metaphors, but as constituting a tangible reality that informs the experiences and ideas of writers, naturalists, philosophers, filmmakers, and composers. Overall, this volume seeks to provide multiple answers to questions regarding the cultural significance of mountains as well as the physical practice of climbing them. Book Synopsis German Song Onstage by : Natasha Loges
Download or read book German Song Onstage written by Natasha Loges and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A singer in an evening dress, a grand piano. A modest-sized audience, mostly well-dressed and silver-haired, equipped with translation booklets. A program consisting entirely of songs by one or two composers. This is the way of the Lieder recital these days. While it might seem that this style of performance is a long-standing tradition, German Song Onstage demonstrates that it is not. For much of the 19th century, the songs of Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms were heard in the home, salon, and, no less significantly, on the concert platform alongside orchestral and choral works. A dedicated program was rare, a dedicated audience even more so. The Lied was a genre with both more private and more public associations than is commonly recalled. The contributors to this volume explore a broad range of venues, singers, and audiences in distinct places and time periods—including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Germany—from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century. These historical case studies are set alongside reflections from a selection of today's leading musicians, offering insights on current Lied practices that will inform future generations of performers, scholars, and connoisseurs. Together these case studies unsettle narrow and elitist assumptions about what it meant and still means to present German song onstage by providing a transnational picture of historical Lieder performance, and opening up discussions about the relationship between history and performance today.
Download or read book Chopin written by John Rink and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology brings together representative examples of the most significant and engaging scholarly writing on Chopin by a wide range of authors. The essays selected for the volume portray a rounded picture of Chopin as composer, pianist and teacher of his music, and of his overall achievement and legacy. Historical perspectives are offered on Chopin’s biography ’as cultural discourse’, on the evolution and origins of his style, and on the contexts of given works. A fascinating contemporary overview of Chopin’s oeuvre is also provided. Seven source studies assess the status and role of Chopin’s notational practices as well as some enigmatic sketch material. Essays in the field of performance studies scrutinise the ’cultural work’ carried out by Chopin’s performances and discuss his playing style along with that of his contemporaries and students. This paves the way for a body of essays on analysis, aesthetics and reception, considering aspects of genre and including an overview of analytical approaches to select works. The remaining essays address Chopin’s handling of form, rhythm and other musical elements, as well as the ’meaning’ of his msuic. The collection as a whole underscores one of the most important aspects of Chopin’s legacy, namely the paradoxical manner in which he drew from the past - in particular, certain eighteenth-century traditions - while stretching inherited conventions and practices to such an extent that a highly original ’music of the future’ was heralded.
Book Synopsis German Culture and the Uncomfortable Past by : Helmut Schmitz
Download or read book German Culture and the Uncomfortable Past written by Helmut Schmitz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the question of the role of the past in the shaping of a contemporary identity, this volumes spans three generations of German and Austrian writers and explores changes and shifts in the aesthetics of Vergangenheitsbewältigung (coming to terms with the past). The purpose of the book is to assess contemporary German literary representations of National Socialism in a wider context of these current debates. The contributors address questions arising from a shift over the last decade, triggered by a generation change-questions of personal and national identity in Germany and Austria, and the aesthetics of memory. One of the central questions that emerges in relation to the Hitler youth generation is that of biography, as examined through Günter Grass' and Martin Walser's conflicting views on the subject of National Socialism. Other themes explored here are the conflict between the post-war generations and the contributions of that conflict to (West)-German mentality, and the growing historical distance and its influence on the aesthetics of representation.
