Download or read book My Last Stop written by Margery Fridstein and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We never used the phrase 'last stop' or explicitly announced to our children that this was where we were going to die. Yet I think we all knew that was the plan." Margery Fridstein and her husband, Bob, were active seniors, working and skiing into their eighties. They were close to their adult children, scattered across the country, but valued their independence. So when health issues drew them away from their beloved home in the Colorado mountains, they looked for a place that would support their lifestyle now and eventually care for them if their health failed. Like tens of thousands of other Americans, they chose a Continuing Care Retirement Community. Fridstein, a psychotherapist with a lifetime of experience evaluating people and relationships, shares her resulting ups and downs in this intimate, clear, funny, and informative memoir. She's ready to answer the questions about retirement community living that matter to seniors but are rarely addressed by outsiders. What are the people like? What is the food like? What are the rules? What will I do all day? What if I get sick? Is it really possible--or even a good idea--to live with so many old people? And in her own matter-of-fact way, she also tackles tough questions about handling the loss of health and loved ones, and eventually end-of-life decisions. Charming and conversational, Margery's insights will be a valuable resource for seniors, and their families, who are considering their own decisions about aging well.

Download or read book Reflections written by Barbara Bush and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-10-30 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There is a myth in the United States—you’ve heard it many times. It says that all American mothers hope that their child will grow up to be President of the United States...” —Barbara Bush Not since Abigail Adams has one woman been both the wife and mother of presidents. Barbara Bush’s prominent place in American history is matched only by her extraordinary popularity: Republicans and Democrats alike appreciate her wit, her compassion, and her devotion to her family. Dignified, loyal, and unpretentious, the former First Lady defied skeptics to become one of the most admired first ladies in history—and she remains a beloved public figure today. In this inspiring follow-up to her number-one bestselling memoir, Mrs. Bush covers the momentous eight years between President George H. W. Bush’s leaving office and President George W. Bush’s 2001 inauguration. Reflections comprises Mrs. Bush’s diary entries, travelogues, family photographs, even secret recipes. She discusses her experiences in the White House, on the campaign trail, and in the public eye, as well as her own views about such controversial issues as her husband’s resignation from the NRA, the caning of an American student in Singapore, and—in her candid epilogue—her family’s reactions to September 11, 2001. Throughout, the extraordinary amount of love and pride Mrs. Bush feels for her husband, five children, and fourteen grandchildren is always clear. Reflections will delight Barbara Bush's millions of admirers with her touching anecdotes and personal revelations from the past decade of a full and fascinating life.

Book excerpt: "Somewhere in the middle of my seventies, I realised that I liked being old." So begins this set of engaging stories and thoughts on growing older by someone with a vast range of life experience to share. Part memoir and part reflection on the joys and challenges of modern life, this book explores the nature of old age and how it compares to what came before. The author argues that being older does not have to be feared. Even better, it can be fun. This kaleidoscopic book offers a refreshing - and often funny - look at a wide range of issues, Including the personal awkwardness of a loss of memory, a new take on the nature of ambition, and sex at the age of 90. It challenges head on many of the prevalent myths and taboos surrounding old age. You may never look at old age in the same way again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English writer E. M. Forster described old age as "a seductive combination of increased wisdom and decaying powers to which too little intelligence is devoted." This book is a response to that criticism. It explains how old age has been considered throughout the ages by philosophers, poets, and other literary figures, and explores how the extraordinary increase of life expectancy that began in the last century has be sustained by science and medicine. Unfortunately the general public still prefers to keep the elderly out of sight and, especially, out of mind. To overcome this marginalization I call for the emergence of a more inclusive humanism--one that is welcoming to persons of all ages. To overcome the pervasive isolation of the elderly requires a new dialogue across all the living generations. Echoing the sentiments of Cicero in his classic study of old age, I also call for a reflective maturity to develop among the elderly, one that reaches deeply into themselves and increases their understanding of the world around them. Spiritual maturity demands growth in virtue and charity in the advance of years. A reaching out to all in the pursuit of justice and the common good is strongly recommended. The book concludes with some reflections upon hopes for personal immortality as well as the qualities of divine justice and mercy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the influences of school music experiences on senior citizens' musical sensibilities, tastes, or abilities by examining their recollected stories about music experiences from their school years. The author employed a multiple-case study design to enable contextual insights into personal interactions with music. With the convenience sampling method, six research participants were recruited, all of whom were age 55 or older, lived in northeastern Ohio, attended U.S. schools for their K-12 education, and had never had any professional experience in the field of music. Data were collected through participant interviews with open-ended questions, journal writings, and researcher field notes, all of which provided evidence for coherence, reliability, and validity. The collected raw data were analyzed in two ways: summarized documentation and code analysis with the cross-case method. The research findings revealed the importance of school music experiences in the development of musical sensibilities, tastes, or abilities. In particular, human interaction between students, teachers, and family members is clearly a significant factor in defining personal music experiences and that school music education does not meet musical needs. School music educators are, therefore, recommended to create learning opportunities for students by developing a feasible curriculum to meet a variety of students' musical interests, provide a professional development program for music teachers and preservice teachers, and establish a collaborative music program with family and local communities.
