Book Synopsis Reflections on the Russian Soul by : Dmitry S. Likhachev
Download or read book Reflections on the Russian Soul written by Dmitry S. Likhachev and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling and often traumatic book is the memoir of one of the most important figures in modern Russian history, Dmitry S. Likhachev, revered as ‘a guardian of national culture’. Reflections on the Russian Soul is an incredible account of an intellectual’s turbulent journey through twentieth century Russia. Likhachev re-counts the fortunes of people with whom he came into contact and reproduces the air of passed years in Russia. Likhachev vividly portrays his childhood years in St. Petersburg and continues into his student life at Leningrad University that led to an agonizing period of imprisonment and near death. He describes how a harmless prank caught the attention of the Secret Police, resulting in his exile and confinement within the infamous prison island of Solovki. He describes his first-hand experience of brutality in prison during the early Stalin years and the incident that not only saved him but also haunted him for the rest of his life. He reflects on the years after his release from prison and the events leading up to the Second World War. His powerful recollection of the blockade of Leningrad provides the reader with a horrific insight into the harsh effects of war, hunger and survival. Lichachev goes on to describe post-war Russia and how his own livelihood developed from literary editor to a return to Leningrad University as Professor of History. This compelling autobiography finishes with Likhachev’s poignant return to Solovki as a free man.

At one hundred eighty-five pounds, she was despondent over diets that never worked and disappointed by her dull job and lack of a love life—until a late-night epiphany involving a half-gallon of ice cream convinced her that becoming a former fat girl, in body and spirit, was the key to creating a life she truly loved. Today, seventy pounds lighter, Lisa is a successful writer at a national magazine. She is married to a man she loves. And she wears a size two. Eye-opening, accessible, and filled with practical advice, this book reveals the seven secrets of Delaney's success, and explores how shifting from "wannabe Former Fat Girl" to actual Former Fat Girl is as much about seeing yourself as a confident, desirable woman as it is about achieving an ideal weight.

How many races of people are there? Were Native Americans the first settlers of the New World? How can we tell if Thomas Jefferson had a child with Sally Hemings? Through an engaging examination of issues such as these, and using non-technical language, Reflections of Our Past shows how anthropologists use genetic information to test theories and define possible answers to fundamental questions in human history. By looking at genetic variation in the world today, we can reconstruct the recent and remote events and processes that created the variation we see, providing a fascinating reflection of our genetic past. Reflections of Our Past is a W. W. Howells Book Prize Winner and Choice Outstanding Academic Title.

Download or read book Fat written by Christopher E. Forth and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fat: such a little word evokes big responses. While ‘fat’ describes the size and shape of bodies, our negative reactions to corpulent bodies also depend on something tangible and tactile; as this book argues, there is more to fat than meets the eye. Fat: A Cultural History of the Stuff of Life offers a historical reflection on how fat has been perceived and imagined in the West since antiquity. Featuring fascinating historical accounts, philosophical, religious and cultural arguments, including discussions of status, gender and race, the book digs deep into the past for the roots of our current notions and prejudices. Three central themes emerge: how we have perceived and imagined obesity over the centuries; how fat as a substance has elicited disgust and how it evokes perceptions of animality; but also how it has been associated with vitality and fertility. By exploring the complex ways in which fat, fatness and fattening have been perceived over time, this book provides rich insights into the stuff our stereotypes are made of.

Book Synopsis North Window: The Stranger behind the Reflection by : Madeleine Watson
Download or read book North Window: The Stranger behind the Reflection written by Madeleine Watson and published by Madeleine Watson. This book was released on with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about my novel, North Window. I wrote it between 2010 and 2015. I have written four novels in total and North Window is my third. I had a job, family and a house. My life couldn’t seem more ordinary. I had been writing stories since my early teens and thought nothing of it. This story seemed to bear no relevance to my life at all. Insomniac, Luke has two lives. By day, he is drafting documents between corporations; by night, he pays to watch erotica from his apartment window. But one performer rues the day she took the commission. Who is this client she works for? And why does the night bring unease when her voyeur takes his post within the shadows? A year after completing this novel, I learned something truly terrible about myself. Unbeknown to me, clues to this horrific truth had leaked into my stories, paintings, poems and other creations. I have since discovered an undercurrent to this novel. This undercurrent was rendered invisible to the one I believed I was writing. My novels are not strictly novels at all, but something sinister. The dictionary lacks a word for what they really are. As this is a true story, I have used my diaries as part of this account. Illustrations are provided in order to convey the intensity of my inner world. One word of note: Dispel all preconceptions about this novel. The story is nothing like what it appears.
Book Synopsis Reflections on Judging by : Richard A. Posner
Download or read book Reflections on Judging written by Richard A. Posner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reflections on Judging, Richard Posner distills the experience of his thirty-one years as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Surveying how the judiciary has changed since his 1981 appointment, he engages the issues at stake today, suggesting how lawyers should argue cases and judges decide them, how trials can be improved, and, most urgently, how to cope with the dizzying pace of technological advance that makes litigation ever more challenging to judges and lawyers. For Posner, legal formalism presents one of the main obstacles to tackling these problems. Formalist judges--most notably Justice Antonin Scalia--needlessly complicate the legal process by advocating "canons of constructions" (principles for interpreting statutes and the Constitution) that are confusing and self-contradictory. Posner calls instead for a renewed commitment to legal realism, whereby a good judge gathers facts, carefully considers context, and comes to a sensible conclusion that avoids inflicting collateral damage on other areas of the law. This, Posner believes, was the approach of the jurists he most admires and seeks to emulate: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louis Brandeis, Benjamin Cardozo, Learned Hand, Robert Jackson, and Henry Friendly, and it is an approach that can best resolve our twenty-first-century legal disputes.

Download or read book Fatty Legs written by Christy Jordan-Fenton and published by Annick Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight-year-old Margaret Pokiak has set her sights on learning to read, even though it means leaving her village in the high Arctic. Faced with unceasing pressure, her father finally agrees to let her make the five-day journey to attend school, but he warns Margaret of the terrors of residential schools. At school Margaret soon encounters the Raven, a black-cloaked nun with a hooked nose and bony fingers that resemble claws. She immediately dislikes the strong-willed young Margaret. Intending to humiliate her, the heartless Raven gives gray stockings to all the girls — all except Margaret, who gets red ones. In an instant Margaret is the laughingstock of the entire school. In the face of such cruelty, Margaret refuses to be intimidated and bravely gets rid of the stockings. Although a sympathetic nun stands up for Margaret, in the end it is this brave young girl who gives the Raven a lesson in the power of human dignity. Complemented by archival photos from Margaret Pokiak-Fenton’s collection and striking artworks from Liz Amini-Holmes, this inspiring first-person account of a plucky girl’s determination to confront her tormentor will linger with young readers.
