Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musings and Memories: Being Chiefly a Collection of Anecdotes and Reflections of a Religious Character, on Various Subjects Moral and religious truth can frequently be more clearly illustrated in connection with a simple incident, so as to leave a profitable impression on the mind, than by a more elaborate essay. With this view, the narratives and comments contained in the following pages have been compiled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "An important, firsthand document for readers who wish to understand this seminal writer and thinker." —Booklist In the spring of 1957, when he was eighty-one years old, Carl Gustav Jung undertook the telling of his life story. Memories, Dreams, Reflections is that book, composed of conversations with his colleague and friend Aniela Jaffé, as well as chapters written in his own hand, and other materials. Jung continued to work on the final stages of the manuscript until shortly before his death on June 6, 1961, making this a uniquely comprehensive reflection on a remarkable life. Fully corrected, this edition also includes Jung's VII Sermones ad Mortuos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about Natsume Soseki (1867–1916), one of Japan’s most celebrated writers. Known primarily for his novels, he also published a large and diverse body of short personal writings (shohin) that have long lived in the shadow of his fictional works. The essays, which appeared in the Asahi shinbun between 1907 and 1915, comprise a fascinating autobiographical mosaic, while capturing the spirit of the Meiji era and the birth of modern Japan. In Reflections in a Glass Door, Marvin Marcus introduces readers to a rich sampling of Soseki’s shohin. The writer revisits his Tokyo childhood, recalling family, friends, and colleagues and musing wistfully on the transformation of his city and its old neighborhoods. He painfully recounts his two years in London, where he immersed himself in literary research even as he struggled with severe depression. A chronic stomach ailment causes Soseki to reflect on his own mortality and what he saw as the spiritual afflictions of modern Japanese: rampant egocentrism and materialism. Throughout he adopts a number of narrative voices and poses: the peevish husband, the harried novelist, the convalescent, the seeker of wisdom. Marcus identifies memory and melancholy as key themes in Soseki’s personal writings and highlights their relevance in his fiction. He balances Soseki’s account of his Tokyo household with that of his wife, Natsume Kyoko, who left a straightforward record of life with her celebrated husband. Soseki crafted a moving and convincing voice in his shohin, which can now be pondered and enjoyed for their penetrating observation and honesty, as well as the fresh perspective they offer on one of Japan’s literary giants.

Book excerpt: After ""Reflections On A Moon"", my meanderings took me to a long stay in Arizona, another trip to see family and friends in Texas a few weeks later, and to a new apartment after packing up 30-plus years of memories and selling the house. So, the journey continued, and in ""Musings and Reflections"", I share the interpretations of what I saw and heard and felt on that path. Many good people of soul have impressed me when their journeys have intersected with mine. Plus, many great minds have inspired me with their words passed forward through time, and some are quoted here in what would have been empty white spaces. There is so much beauty out there to be seen, felt, and expressed... from a tear to a laugh; from a loss to a light; from a river to a mountain; from a speck of sand to a star; and all the moons and moods between... the best and the worst are all beauteous when accepted as part of the whole fabric of Life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a multi-faceted career, M.L. (Mike) VanBlaricum has turned his attention to writing poetry and musing on his life as a Baby Boomer. The author is a prototypical Boomer. He was born in 1950 and went off to college to study engineering in the explosive year of 1968. He grew up in small towns in Illinois where he developed a fascination with science, the trombone, nature, and girls. This collection of poems, essays, and musings includes memories and reflections of being a free-range child in the Fifties, a restrained teenager in the Sixties, a college student in the Seventies, and a rambunctious retiree in the Tens. VanBlaricum's accessible writings are laced with wry humor, musical references, and surprise endings. The subject matter ranges from lost loves, the importance of puppy love to the wonderment of real love, what it means to be a Baby Boomer, teenage angst, ruminations on kite-flying and teeter-totters, a fascination with clouds, toads, and moons, and observations and sideways ponderings on natural phenomena. The internal dialogue between engineer and poet bookends this collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays on music and life by the famed classical pianist and composer Stephen Hough is one of the world’s leading pianists, winning global acclaim and numerous awards, both for his concerts and his recordings. He is also a writer, composer, and painter, and has been described by The Economist as one of “Twenty Living Polymaths.” Hough writes informally and engagingly about music and the life of a musician, from the broader aspects of what it is to walk out onto a stage or to make a recording, to specialist tips from deep inside the practice room: how to trill, how to pedal, how to practice. He also writes vividly about people he’s known, places he’s traveled to, books he’s read, paintings he’s seen; and he touches on more controversial subjects, such as assisted suicide and abortion. Even religion is there—the possibility of the existence of God, problems with some biblical texts, and the challenges involved in being a gay Catholic. Rough Ideas is an illuminating, constantly surprising introduction to the life and mind of one of our great cultural figures.
