Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Pennsylvania during the War of 1812 was far more active than one today might imagine. It pitted the United States against Great Britain and Canada (a British Colony) with their Native American allies and cost the lives of some 20,000 men. Infantry forces fought in Canada, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., and naval units battled on the Oceans, on the Great Lakes, and in and around New Orleans. Western Pennsylvania's contributions to the war were significant and this two-volume work studies the conflict from regional voices and news reports of the day. I Consider It My Duty examines the regional impact of the war through newspapers, magazines, books, letters, diaries, and other archives that survive. This two volume work studies that era from the voices of the day in Western Pennsylvania. Here you will find how people felt about the war. How people lived lives during this time and all of the anguish, heart-break, and fears are reported through the newspapers, magazines, books, letters, diaries, and various archives that survive today.I Consider also explores the Native American perspective in participating in the war, a conflict that threatened their nation and way of life. Great Britain was allied with the Native Americans to agitate against U.S. expansion into the Western Territories. Beyond being an important history, this book is an excellent reference for those folks looking into their Western Pennsylvania Genealogy, the book presents a detailed reference source for genealogists: including materials from various Pennsylvania Archives; local and State militia roll calls; and Federal Army units.Author Mark Painter spent years researching and creating this archive: a detailed recording in the words of the people who lived and suffered through it. The work includes rare, first-hand accounts of war atrocities and battle strategies in soldiers' diaries and military communications that helped define future military policy and planning. I Consider chronicles citizen pride in the young untested nation and public reaction to their nation at war. Witness American fear of the British and potential loss of new freedoms won a generation earlier in Revolutionary War. There are so many ways you can read this two-volume work.

This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania, Vol. 1 The present work, "Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania," presents in the aggregate an amount and variety of genealogical and personal information and portraiture unequalled by any kindred publication. No similar work concerning Western Pennsylvania has ever before been presented, and it contains a vast amount of ancestral history never before printed. The object, clearly defined and well digested, is to present in concise form the history of Western Pennsylvania Families of the Colonial Days. There are numerous voluminous histories of the State, making it unnecessary in this work to even outline its annals. What has been published, however, relates principally to civic life. The amplification necessary to complete the picture, old and nowaday, is what is supplied by these Genealogical and Personal Memoirs. In other words, while.others have written of the times, the province of this work is as a chronicle of the people who have made this magnificent region what it is. Unique in conception and treatment, this work constitutes one of the most original and permanently valuable contributions ever made to the social history of an American community. In it are arrayed in a lucid and dignified manner all the available facts regarding the ancestry, personal careers and matrimonial alliances of those who, in each succeeding generation, have been accorded leading positions in social, professional and business life. It is not based upon, neither does it minister to, aristocratic prejudices and assumptions. On the contrary, its fundamental ideas are thoroughly American and democratic. The work everywhere conveys the lesson that distinction has been gained only by honorable public service, or by usefulness in private station, and that the development and prosperity of the region of which it treats have been dependent upon the character of its citizens, and in the stimulus which they have given to commerce, to industry, to the arts and sciences, to education and religion - to all that is comprised in the highest civilization of the present day - through a continual progressive development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the State of Kentucky in the Lead, the Battle to Secure the American Frontier for Westward Expansion The spring of 1812 found the young American republic on edge. The British Navy was impressing American seamen with impunity at an alarming rate while vicious attacks on frontier settlements by American Indians armed with British weapons had left a trail of fear and outrage. As calls for a military response increased, Kentucky, the first state west of the Appalachians, urged that only by defeating the British could the nation achieve security. The very thought conjured up embellished memories of the American Revolution, and once war was declared, many soldiers believed that the "Spirit of 76" would lead them to victory. But the conflict quickly transformed from a patriotic parade to a desperate attempt to survive against a major military power. While the War of 1812 is known mostly for later events, including the burning of Washington and the siege of Fort McHenry, much of the first two years of the war was fought in the west, with the British Army and their Indian allies nearly overrunning the Old Northwest and threatening the borders of the original colonies. In The War of 1812 in the West: From Fort Detroit to New Orleans, David Kirkpatrick chronicles the near catastrophic loss of the Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois Territories, the bitter fight against both Tecumseh's Confederation and the Creek Nation, and the slow recovery and ultimate victory of American forces--a large portion of which was supplied by Kentucky--from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Battles such as River Raisin, Thames River, Fort Meigs, and New Orleans are placed in context to show how they secured America's frontier and opened territory to the west to new settlement following the war.
