Download or read book Essays in Idleness written by Kenko and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two works on life's fleeting pleasures are by Buddhist monks from medieval Japan, but each shows a different world-view. In the short memoir Hôjôki, Chômei recounts his decision to withdraw from worldly affairs and live as a hermit in a tiny hut in the mountains, contemplating the impermanence of human existence. Kenko, however, displays a fascination with more earthy matters in his collection of anecdotes, advice and observations. From ribald stories of drunken monks to aching nostalgia for the fading traditions of the Japanese court, Essays in Idleness is a constantly surprising work that ranges across the spectrum of human experience. Meredith McKinney's excellent new translation also includes notes and an introduction exploring the spiritual and historical background of the works. Chômei was born into a family of Shinto priests in around 1155, at at time when the stable world of the court was rapidly breaking up. He became an important though minor poet of his day, and at the age of fifty, withdrew from the world to become a tonsured monk. He died in around 1216. Kenkô was born around 1283 in Kyoto. He probably became a monk in his late twenties, and was also noted as a calligrapher. Today he is remembered for his wise and witty aphorisms, 'Essays in Idleness'. Meredith McKinney, who has also translated Sei Shonagon's The Pillow Book for Penguin Classics, is a translator of both contemporary and classical Japanese literature. She lived in Japan for twenty years and is currently a visitng fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra. '[Essays in Idleness is] a most delightful book, and one that has served as a model of Japanese style and taste since the 17th century. These cameo-like vignettes reflect the importance of the little, fleeting futile things, and each essay is Kenko himself' Asian Student

Book Synopsis Grave Misfortune: The USS Indianapolis Tragedy by : Richard A. Hulver
Download or read book Grave Misfortune: The USS Indianapolis Tragedy written by Richard A. Hulver and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to the Sailors and Marines who lost their lives on the final voyage of USS Indianapolis and to those who survived the torment at sea following its sinking. plus the crews that risked their lives in rescue ships. The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a decorated World War II warship that is primarily remembered for her worst 15 minutes. . This ship earned ten (10) battle stars for her service in World War II and was credited for shooting down nine (9) enemy planes. However, this fame was overshadowed by the first 15 minutes July 30, 1945, when she was struck by two (2) torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-58 and sent to the bottom of the Philippine Sea. The sinking of Indianapolis and the loss of 880 crew out of 1,196 --most deaths occurring in the 4-5 day wait for a rescue delayed --is a tragedy in U.S. naval history. This historical reference showcases primary source documents to tell the story of Indianapolis, the history of this tragedy from the U.S. Navy perspective. It recounts the sinking, rescue efforts, follow-up investigations, aftermath and continuing communications efforts. Included are deck logs to better understand the ship location when she sunk and testimony of survivors and participants. For additional historical publications produced by the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command, please check out these resources here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/agency/naval-history-heritage-command Year 2016 marked the 71st anniversary of the sinking and another spike in public attention on the loss -- including a big screen adaptation of the story, talk of future films, documentaries, and planned expeditions to locate the wreckage of the warship.
Book Synopsis Essential Physics for Manual Medicine E-Book by : Martin Ferrier Young
Download or read book Essential Physics for Manual Medicine E-Book written by Martin Ferrier Young and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A textbook that covers Physical concepts at a basic level for manual therapists specifically . Clinicians in general and manual therapists in particular have a need tounderstand certain, specific aspects of physics to an advanced level. However, many lack prior education in this area, with chemistry and biology 'A' levels being emphasized in terms of entrance requirements. Most textbooks aimed at this field concentrate exclusively on the physics underpinning biomechanics, but the level at which these books are pitched is often too high to allow understanding by students who have an inadequate background in the subject. This book acts, in part, as a primer to address this deficit. Students are also required to understand the basic physics underpinning physiology, biochemistry, radiography and therapeutics. This textbook will be a guide to these specialist areas of knowledge. This text will cover biophysics as a core subject to guide the potential clinician from total ignorance to complete mastery in the areas of physics pertinent to manual medicine and its related disciplines. Self assessment questions at the beginning of each chapter allow readers to check their existing knowledge prior to reading the chapter. Each section builds from basic principles to advanced levels. Clinical focus.
