Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) is the undisputed master of botanical art. His illustrations of flowers occupy the intersection of art and science, and they represent a unique fusion of botanical precision with artistic elegance. This richly illustrated publication presents a wide selection of Redouté's books, drawings and watercolours. Several short essays by Dutch and French specialists deal with different aspects of his art. As court artist to Queen Marie-Antoinette and Empress Joséphine, Redouté drew extraordinary flowers and plants from the Jardin des plantes and the gardens of Malmaison, which made him the darling of Parisian society. Napoleon Bonaparte presented his books as gifts to the crowned heads of Europe, and his pictures illustrated the works of the most eminent scientists of his day. His most famous books, 'Les Liliacées' and 'Les Roses', are among the milestones of botanical literature. Exhibition: Teylers Museum, Haarlem, the Netherlands (19.1.-5.5.2013).
Download or read book Seeing Flowers written by Teri Dunn Chace and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’ve all seen red roses, blue irises, and yellow daffodils. But when we really look closely at a flower, whole new worlds of beauty and intricacy emerge. Using a unique process that far surpasses conventional macro photography, Robert Llewellyn shows us details that few of us have ever seen: the amazing architecture of stamens and pistils; the subtle shadings on a petal; the secret recesses of nectar tubes. Complementing Llewellyn’s stunning photographs are Teri Dunn Chace’s lyrical, illuminating essays. By highlighting the features that distinguish twenty-eight of the most common families of flowering plants, Chace gives us fascinating insights into the natural history of flowers, such as the relationship between pollinators and floral form and color. At the same time she gives us a deeper appreciation of why and how flowers have become so deeply embedded in human culture. Whether you’re a nature lover, a gardener, a photography buff, or someone who simply responds to the timeless beauty and variety of the floral world, Seeing Flowers will be a source of enduring delight.

Book excerpt: Rare indeed is the artist who is feted by royalty, and at the same time sought after by naturalists and scientists as an active collaborator. Such a painter was Pierre Joseph Redoute, born in 1759 on the Franco-Belgian border. Before Redoute was thirty his fame was established in Paris, where he was to become as renowned as his great neo-classic contemporary, Jacques-Louis David - and highly appreciated and honoured up to the year of his death, 1840. Even as Redoute collaborated with leading naturalists on several books and was rewarded with the title of Dessinateur to the Institut de France, he continued to specialize in roses, lilies, a nd lilacs. Redoute created this collection of masterpieces in 1833 as the pinnacle of his craft. In this lavish work - many of the plates were retouched by hand - he applied every technique and skill he had perfected, bringing art and nature into close harmony. A professional of self-imposed exacting standards, Redoute never abandoned the search for beauty and accuracy - as this magnificently produced volume shows so well. Although sales of his works in his lifetime never enabled him to balance his financial problems, connoisseurs of his turbulent times acclaimed him the Raphael of Flowers, the Rembrandt of Roses.

Book Synopsis Botanical Shakespeare by : Gerit Quealy
Download or read book Botanical Shakespeare written by Gerit Quealy and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating, beautifully illustrated, one-of-a-kind color compendium of the flowers, fruits, herbs, trees, seeds, and grasses cited in the works of the world’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare, accompanied by their companion quotes from all of his plays and poems. With a foreword by Dame Helen Mirren—the first foreword she has ever contributed. In this striking compilation, Shakespeare historian Gerit Quealy and respected Japanese artist Sumié Hasegawa combine their knowledge and skill in this first and only book that examines every plant that appears in the works of Shakespeare. Botanical Shakespeare opens with a brief look at the Bard’s relationship to the plants mentioned in his works—a diversity that illuminates his knowledge of the science of botany, as well as the colloquy, revealing his unmatched skill for creating metaphorical connections and interweaving substantive philosophy. At the heart of the book are "portraits" of the over 170 flowers, fruits, grains, grasses, trees, herbs, seeds and vegetables that Shakespeare mentions in his plays and poems. Botanical Shakespeare features a gorgeous color illustration of each, giving a "face" to the name, alongside the specific text in which it appears and the character(s) who utter the lines in which it is mentioned. This fascinating visual compendium also includes a dictionary describing each plant—such as Eglantine, a wild rose with a slight prickle, cherished for its singular scent, superior to any other rose; and the difference between apples and apple-john—along with indices listing the botanical by play/poem, by character, and genus for easy reference, ideal for gardeners and thoughtful birthday gift-giving. This breathtaking, incomparable collection of exquisite artwork and companion quotes offers unique depth and insight into Shakespeare and his timeless work through the unusual perspective of the plants themselves.
