Book excerpt: Over the past quarter century, four consecutive American presidents—two Democrat, two Republican—have spent more time, diplomatic capital, and military resources on Iraq than any other country in the world. Much as the Vietnam syndrome cast a long shadow over American security policy in the decades after the end of the Vietnam War, Iraq provides the commanding narrative for this generation of American leaders. In this book, former Deputy Secretary of State P. J. Crowley, one of America’s most insightful national security commentators, unpacks the legacy of American triumphs and failures in Iraq . He argues that presidents have fallen victim to the Iraq Syndrome—the disconnect between politics, policy, strategy, and narrative—that has hampered America’s foreign policy in the Middle East and hotspots throughout the world. In order to maintain America’s global leadership role, Crowley argues that the next president must realign American’s national security politics, policies, strategies, and narrative for the long term.

Book excerpt: In Red Line, Joby Warrick, the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Black Flags, shares the thrilling unknown story of America’s mission in Syria: to find and destroy Syria’s chemical weapons and keep them out of the hands of the Islamic State. In August 2012, Syrian president Bashar al-Assad was clinging to power in a vicious civil war. When secret intelligence revealed that the dictator might resort to using chemical weapons, President Obama warned that doing so would cross “a red line.” Assad did it anyway, bombing the Damascus suburb of Ghouta with sarin gas, killing hundreds of civilians, and forcing Obama to decide if he would mire America in another unpopular war in the Middle East. When Russia offered to broker the removal of Syria’s chemical weapons, Obama leapt at the out. So began an electrifying race to find, remove, and destroy 1,300 tons of chemical weapons in the midst of a raging civil war. The extraordinary little-known effort is a triumph for the Americans, but soon Russia’s long game becomes clear: it will do anything to preserve Assad’s rule. As America’s ability to control events in Syria shrinks, the White House learns that ISIS, building its caliphate in Syria’s war-tossed territory, is seeking chemical weapons for itself, with an eye to attack the West. Drawing on astonishing original reporting, Warrick crafts a character-driven narrative that reveals how the United States embarked on a bold adventure to prevent one catastrophe but could not avoid a tragic chain of events that led to another.

Book excerpt: Based on archival sources and oral history, this book reconstructs a border-building process in Namibia that spanned more than sixty years. The process commenced with the establishment of a temporary veterinary defence line against rinderpest by the German colonial authorities in the late nineteenth century and ended with the construction of a continuous two-metre-high fence by the South African colonial government sixty years later. This 1250-kilometre fence divides northern from central Namibia even today. The book combines a macro and a micro-perspective and differentiates between cartographic and physical reality. The analysis explores both the colonial state's agency with regard to veterinary and settlement policies and the strategies of Africans and Europeans living close to the border. The analysis also includes the varying perceptions of individuals and populations who lived further north and south of the border and describes their experiences crossing the border as migrant workers, African traders, European settlers and colonial officials. The Red Line's history is understood as a gradual process of segregating livestock and people, and of constructing dichotomies of modern and traditional, healthy and sick, European and African.

Book excerpt: WWIII explodes in this electrifying debut military thriller in the tradition of Red Storm Rising and The Third World War. “Delta-Two, I’ve got tanks through the wire! They’re everywhere!” World War III explodes in seconds when a resurgent Russian Empire launches a deadly armored thrust into the heart of Germany. With a powerful blizzard providing cover, Russian tanks thunder down the autobahns while undercover Spetsnaz teams strike at vulnerable command points. Standing against them are the woefully undermanned American forces. What they lack in numbers they make up for in superior weapons and training. But before the sun rises they are on the run across a smoking battlefield crowded with corpses. Any slim hope for victory rests with one unlikely hero. Army Staff Sergeant George O'Neill, a communications specialist, may be able to reestablish links that have been severed by hostile forces, but that will take time. While he works, it’s up to hundreds of individual American soldiers to hold back the enemy flood. There’s one thing that’s certain. The thin line between victory and defeat is also the red line between life and death.

Book excerpt: A longtime CNN columnist astutely combines history and global politics to help us better understanding the exploding number of military, political, and diplomatic crises around the globe. The riveting and illuminating behind-the-scenes stories of the world's most intense “red lines," from diplomatic and military challenges at particular turning points in history to the ones that set the tone of geopolitics today. Whether it was the red line in Munich that led to the start of the Second World War, to the red lines in the South China Sea, the Korean Peninsula, Syria and the Middle East. As we traverse the globe, Andelman uses original documentary research, previously classified material, and interviews with key players, to help us understand the growth, the successes and frequent failures that have shaped our world today. Andelman provides not just vivid historical context, but a political anatomy of these red lines. How might their failures be prevented going forward? When and how can such lines in the sand help preserve peace rather than tempt conflict? A Red Line in the Sand is a vital examination of our present and the future—where does diplomacy end and war begin? It is an object lesson of tantamount importance to every leader, diplomat, citizen, and voter. As America establishes more red lines than it has pledged to defend, every American should understand the volatile atmosphere and the existential stakes of the red web that encompasses the globe.

Book excerpt: Space Opera Firsts Four First in Series Books in One Sample Pack Here is the perfect chance to dip into four of Cameron Cooper’s space opera series--the first stories in each series, in one set. Hammer and Crucible The interstellar array which links worlds together wakes to find it has enemies… Danny Andela, once known as The Imperial Hammer, withdrew from the Imperial Rangers decades ago, her reputation in tatters. She lives on her family’s star barge, waiting to die of a rare disease: old age. Then Danny learns that the military disaster which essentially ended her life might possibly have been arranged by the Emperor himself… New Star Rising Be careful what you ask an android to do… Bellona Cardenas Scordina de Deluca, daughter of the primary Cardenas family, went missing ten years ago. Reynard Cardenas, Bellona’s father and head of the family, receives anonymous, unsubstantiated news that she has been found. He sends the most disposable person in the family to investigate—Sang, the family android. Sang’s investigation trips off chain reactions which shift the generations-old lukewarm war between Erium and Karassia into a galaxy-wide conflagration… Galactic Thunder Danny and her crew learn that humans may not be alone in the galaxy. When the wildcat ship Ige Ibas goes dark and silent, Dalton comes to Danny for help. But the Ige Ibas has gone dark for a reason, and Danny’s investigation rouses the ire of a new enemy, one that emerges from beyond any worlds known to humans… The Body in the Zero Gee Brothel Meet Ptolemy Jovan Lane, a unique peacemaker. Laws are hard to hold, out in the fringes of known space, but Ptolemy Lane is charged with maintaining peace under the dome of Georgina’s Town. When a body is discovered in the local casino’s brothel, Lane is reluctant to get involved. Only, the body is the casino’s owner, Guisy Oakmint, and Doc Lowry is insisting Lane investigate. Lane soon learns why… Space Opera Science Fiction Boxed Set __ Praise for Cameron’s space opera: I am in awe of the writing ability and imagination of Cameron Cooper. Brilliant and intricate. Twists and turns so you’re never really sure what is going on behind the scenes. Cameron somehow describes scenes in ways that make me feel like I am actually present This story truly does justice to the legacies of the greats, like Orson Scott Card and Frank Herbert. Edge of your seat action will keep you captivated until the final page!! Cooper is a masterful storyteller An interesting and riveting book as have all the preceding stories been This is sci-fi at its best. This story, and the entire series, truly does justice to the greats of science fiction. The attention to detail makes everything you read plausible, and you’ll exist in this new world along with these characters in this incredible story Cameron is an excellent sci-fi writer, but this series is way beyond anything I anticipated The depth of the storyline is something you must experience because words would not do it justice The complex concepts of the space-based life were broken into easy-to-read bites making this adventure totally captivating! __ Cameron Cooper is the author of the Imperial Hammer series, an Amazon best-selling space opera series, among others. The Return of the Peacemaker is the fifth and final story in the Ptolemy Lane space opera science fiction series by award-winning SF author Cameron Cooper. The Ptolemy Lane Tales: 1.0: The Body in the Zero Gee Brothel 2.0: The Captain Who Broke the Rules 3.0: The Maker of Widowmakers’ Arm 4.0: The Ancient Girl in the Autopod 5.0: The Return of the Peacemaker Space Opera/SF Crime Novel __ Praise for the Ptolemy Lane Tales: Hard-boiled detective meets Mos Eisley cantina I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the world building. A lot of potential for rich, nuanced story telling in this world. I look forward to seeing more of Ptolemy Lane and others from his world! I felt like I was in a black and white sci-fi avant-garde movie. Humphrey Bogart is in the background somewhere, smoking a Camel cigarette, or maybe a future Sherlock Holmes. I have truly enjoyed Cameron's other books, but this one is so very different from all the rest. Ptolemy Lane is one of the most unique characters I've seen in awhile! Very interesting, beautifully written, complex story. Very interesting and imaginative, it's like Cameron has already been there and lived that! Original and entertaining. Snappy action with unpredictable characters in a captivating world! I love this series and can’t wait for the next installment Lane is utterly complex and leaves the reader wanting more. I actually felt bad for how Ptolemy Lane started his day This is such a clever story! A complex world which is presented with mystery , intrigue and entertainment I find Ninety-Nine a most interesting character Cameron’s short stories were awesome in themselves but a mind like Jovan’s has got to have an expanded adventure Very cleverly written mystery - it is all in the detail with this one While I have loved all the short stories, this one tops them all. Cameron is a great writer who keeps his readers captivated with his interesting plots and twists and turns throughout the series. Very well written and edited book with well developed characters and continuing drama I’m already excited about the next part of this series A wonderful story of who done it, told as only Cameron Cooper can. A clever and intriguing plot keeps you turning page after page I have loved all of the stories and this one just tops them all __ Cameron Cooper is the author of the Imperial Hammer space opera series, among others, and is the pen name used by best selling author Tracy Cooper-Posey.
