Book Synopsis The Road to Redemption by : Michael Perman
Download or read book The Road to Redemption written by Michael Perman and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2004-01-21 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most dramatic episodes in American history was the attempt to establish a two-party political system in the South during Reconstruction. Historians, however, have never systematically analyzed the region's political process during that era. Michael Perman undertakes this task, arguing that the key to understanding Reconstruction politics can be found in the factions that developed inside the two parties. Not only did these factions play a crucial role in determining each party's policies and electoral strategies, but they also shaped the course of the South's overall political development during this critical period. In the first section of Road to Redemption, Perman offers a provocative and original analysis of the characteristics and priorities of the two parties, explaining how the South's untried and volatile party system operated during Reconstruction. By the mid-1870s this system had begun to collapse. The book's concluding section explains how and why the Republican party and Reconstruction were overthrown and describes the Democratic ascendancy that replaced them. Perman's innovative study integrates the history of Reconstruction and Redemption and challenges the prevailing interpretation of who the Redeemers were and how they rose to power.

Book Synopsis Participation and Covenant by : Dick Moes
Download or read book Participation and Covenant written by Dick Moes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-03-13 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Participation and Covenant: Contours of a Theodramatic Theology, Moes develops a theological framework that has participation in the life of God in Christ through the Spirit as its integrative center. In doing so, he enters into conversation with covenant or federal theology, particularly as it has been presented by Michael Horton, in which the integrative center is the concept of the covenant. He argues that God's fundamental relationship with humanity does not entail a covenant ontology--a fundamentally legal and ethical relationship to God, as we find in Horton's presentation--but rather an ontology of participating in God's loving presence in Christ through the Holy Spirit. For this relationship we were created, and this participation is therefore natural to us. Accordingly, a theodramatic framework that incorporates a reframed understanding of divine-human covenants and that has participation in the life of God in Christ by the Spirit as its integrative center is better able to give direction for clearly communicating the gospel in our secular culture and for properly shaping our Christian identity and practice--in the face of the secularism that affects the church, too--than Horton's framework of covenant theology.

The book commences with a consideration of the biblical-theological method, followed by an Old Testament essay, and then proceeds through the Gospels, Paul and Revelation, and concludes with review articles of two recent notable books.
Book Synopsis Litigation Nation by : Peter Charles Hoffer
Download or read book Litigation Nation written by Peter Charles Hoffer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-09-20 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have long been identified as a people of law and lawyers with an addiction to lawsuits. In Litigation Nation, Peter Charles Hoffer, one of America’s most preeminent legal historians, charts the history of civil litigation from the seventeenth century to the present, using key cases pursued by ordinary people to illustrate how the civil courts have been a battlefront to contest the boundaries of permissible personal conduct in times of social and political change. Using representative case studies from each period—from defamation suits in seventeenth-century America to recent civil rights and gender discrimination lawsuits, Hoffer’s concise and accessible history shows how litigation reflects the lives and values of ordinary Americans.

Book excerpt: "I love Jesus but hate the church." We hear this kind of talk all the time, but what if it's profoundly mistaken? Rob Bentz challenges readers to rethink this popular—yet ultimately harmful—mentality. Drawing on his experience as a pastor, Bentz helps those disenchanted with the church to rediscover its importance for the Christian life by examining the biblical, theological, and historical reasons why Christ's followers should embrace gospel-centered community—even when it's hard. Honest yet hopeful, The Unfinished Church provides an encouraging look at God's ultimate building project: his church.
