Book Synopsis History's Erratics by : David M. Emmons
Download or read book History's Erratics written by David M. Emmons and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-10-22 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Ice Age glaciers left behind erratics, so the external forces of history tumbled the Irish into America. Existing both out of time and out of space, a diverse range of these Roman-Catholic immigrants saw their new country in a much different way than did the Protestants who settled and claimed it. These erratics chose backward looking tradition and independence over assimilation and embraced a quintessentially Irish form of subversiveness that arose from their culture, faith, and working-class outlook. David M. Emmons draws on decades of research and thought to plumb the mismatch of values between Protestant Americans hostile to Roman Catholicism and the Catholic Irish strangers among them. Joining ethnicity and faith to social class, Emmons explores the unique form of dissidence that arose when Catholic Irish workers and their sympathizers rejected the beliefs and symbols of American capitalism. A vibrant and original tour de force, History’s Erratics explores the ancestral roots of Irish nonconformity and defiance in America.
Book Synopsis Green Is the New Red by : Will Potter
Download or read book Green Is the New Red written by Will Potter and published by City Lights Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when everyone is going green, most people are unaware that the FBI is using anti-terrorism resources to target environmentalists and animal rights activists. The courts are being used to push conventional boundaries of what constitutes "terrorism" and to hit nonviolent activists with disproportionate sentences. Some have faced terrorism charges for simply chalking slogans on the sidewalk. Like the Red Scare, this "Green Scare" is about fear and intimidation, using a word—"eco-terrorist"—to push a political agenda, instill fear and silence dissent. The animal rights and environmental movements directly threaten corporate profits every time activists encourage people to go vegan, to stop driving, to consume fewer resources and live simply. Their boycotts are damaging, and corporations and the politicians who represent them know it. In many ways, the Green Scare, like the Red Scare, can be seen as a culture war, a war of values. Will Potter outlines the political, legal, extra-legal and public relations strategies that are being used to threaten even acts of nonviolent civil disobedience with the label of "terrorism." Here is a guided tour into the world of radical activism that introduces the real people behind the headlines and tells the story of how everyday people are being prevented from speaking up for what they believe in. Potter (a contributor to The Next Eco-Warriors) warns that the U.S. government is using post-9/11 anti-terrorism resources to target environmentalists and animal right activists (in some cases for doing nothing but speaking up) . . . Potter warns of the crumbling of "the legal wall separating 'terrorist' from 'dissident' or 'undesirable,'" and concludes his account with a call to action and a decry of the injustice that results in the "terrorist" label being put on those who threaten American corporate interests. Alarming."—Publishers Weekly "In this hard-hitting debut, journalist Potter likens the Justice Department targeting of environmentalists today to McCarthyism in the 1950s . . . A shocking exposé of judicial overreach."—Kirkus Reviews (Starred review) Will Potter is an award-winning reporter who has written for publications including the Chicago Tribune, the Dallas Morning News and Legal Affairs, and has testified before the U.S. Congress about his reporting. He is the creator of www.GreenIsTheNewRed.com, where he blogs about the Green Scare.

Book Synopsis Publications Combined: Counter-Narcotics and Terrorism Operational Medical Support (CONTOMS) TACTICAL MEDIC HANDBOOK & TACTICAL EMERGENCY MEDICAL SUPPORT (TEMS) PROTOCOLS by : U. S. Government
Download or read book Publications Combined: Counter-Narcotics and Terrorism Operational Medical Support (CONTOMS) TACTICAL MEDIC HANDBOOK & TACTICAL EMERGENCY MEDICAL SUPPORT (TEMS) PROTOCOLS written by U. S. Government and published by Jeffrey Frank Jones. This book was released on with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disclaimer: These guidelines were developed as a reference for the Counter-Narcotics and Terrorism Operational Medical Support (CONTOMS) Program. The guidelines and protocols provided in this manual are based on the most current information available at the time of publication. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this information, but the CONTOMS Program cannot be responsible for discrepancies or typographical errors. Since medical practice is continually evolving, providers are reminded to remain cognizant of the most current practices that may revise or replace the approach adopted in this publication. Providers are also cautioned not to rely on this manual as a sole source of information about patient care, but rather to tailor their therapy to the clinical context and to consult medical control for any concerns. Foreword These protocols are issued by the Office of Health Affairs of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). These protocols are for the use of licensed Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers authorized to provide medical care in the Department. The protocols contained within this text are the “Standard of Care” within those areas regulated under DHS. These protocols outline and define the expected level of care that should be administered to patients treated by approved DHS EMS providers. These combined protocols create a dynamic document that must be applied relevant to individual patient presentations and situations. An individual patient may require the application of a single protocol, a portion of a protocol, or a combination of several protocols, in order to adequately treat the patient’s condition. It is the expectation of DHS OHA that providers utilize the protocols, patient assessment, and clinical findings cooperatively to establish a treatment plan for each patient. These protocols provide for patient care capabilities identified as acceptable protocols by the Office of Health Affairs and approved for adoption by DHS agency EMS programs. Program Medical Director approval and approved training and skills testing are required for these protocols to be adopted and available for use. Specific components of the protocols, therefore, may not be available to all DHS personnel. The scope of the medication and equipment is defined by operational capabilities and are approved by the Program Medical Director.

Book Synopsis Understanding U.S. Military Conflicts through Primary Sources [4 volumes] by : James R. Arnold
Download or read book Understanding U.S. Military Conflicts through Primary Sources [4 volumes] written by James R. Arnold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-11-12 with total page 1820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easily accessible resource that showcases the links between using documented primary sources and gaining a more nuanced understanding of military history. Primary source analysis is a valuable tool that teaches students how historians utilize documents and interpret evidence from the past. This four-volume reference traces key decisions in U.S. military history—from the Revolutionary War through the 21st-century conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq—by examining documents relating to military strategy and national policy judgments by U.S. military and political leaders. A comprehensive introductory essay provides readers with the context necessary to understand the relationship between diplomatic documents, military correspondence, and other documentation related to events that shaped warfare, diplomacy, and military strategy. Once the stage is set, the work covers 14 conflicts that are significant to U.S. history. Treatment of each of the conflicts begins with a historical overview followed by a chronology and approximately 30 primary source documents presented in chronological order. Each document is accompanied by a description and annotations and by an analysis that highlights its importance to the event or topic under discussion. Designed for secondary school and college students, the work will be exceptionally valuable to teachers who will appreciate the ready-made lessons that fit directly into core curriculum standards.
