Squares and Triangles, the second in Campbell's "Scrap Quilt Book Series," offers 13 basic but boldly sophisticated patterns. If you're a beginner, you'll want the book for its clear instructions and easy piecing steps. If you're more experienced, you'll love the versatility and nearly innumerable number of design possibilities shown here. Making the book a must-have are "Elsie's Top Tips for Squares and Triangle Quilts," complete with full-color diagrams. Says Campbell, "My favorite part of quiltmaking is playing with color and value so that I give a contemporary twist to traditional blocks and patterns." She does it here—with 13 quilts shown in full-color photography, along with easy-to-follow instructions, patterns, and diagrams for making each one. For beginning and intermediate quilters.

Book excerpt: Starting from psychophysics, over the last 50 years, most progress in unravelling the mechanisms of color vision has been made through the study of single cell responses, mainly in LGN and striate cortex. A similar development in the study of form perception may seem to be underway, centred on the study of temporal cortex. However, because of the combinatorial characteristics of form perception, we are also observing the opposite tendency: from single-cell activity to population coding, and from static receptive field structures to system dynamics and integration and, ultimately, a synthetic form of psychophysics of color and form perception. From single cells to system integration: it is this development the present Research Topic wishes to highlight and promote. How does this development affect our views on the various attributes of perception? In particular, we are interested in to what extent evolving knowledge in the field of color perception is relevant within a developing integrative framework of form perception. The goal of this Research Topic is to bring together experimental research encompassing both color and form perception. For this volume, we planned a broad scope of topics – on color in complex scenes, color and form, as well as dynamic aspects of form perception. We expect that the Research Topic will be attractive to the community of researchers whose work straddles the boundary between the two visual perception fields, as well as to the wider community interested in integrative/systems neuroscience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades, attention has been one of the most investigated areas of research in perception and cognition. However, the literature on the field contains a bewildering array of findings, and empirical progress has not been matched by consensus on major theoretical issues. The Psychology of Attention presents a systematic review of the main lines of research on attention; the topics range from perception of threshold stimuli to memory storage and decision making. The book develops empirical generalizations about the major issues and suggests possible underlying theoretical principles. Pashler argues that widely assumed notions of processing resources and automaticity are of limited value in understanding human information processing. He proposes a central bottleneck for decision making and memory retrieval, and describes evidence that distinguishes this limitation from perceptual limitations and limited-capacity short-term memory.
