Book Synopsis Recycling Reconsidered by : Samantha Macbride
Download or read book Recycling Reconsidered written by Samantha Macbride and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-12-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the success and popularity of recycling has diverted attention from the steep environmental costs of manufacturing the goods we consume and discard. Recycling is widely celebrated as an environmental success story. The accomplishments of the recycling movement can be seen in municipal practice, a thriving private recycling industry, and widespread public support and participation. In the United States, more people recycle than vote. But, as Samantha MacBride points out in this book, the goals of recycling—saving the earth (and trees), conserving resources, and greening the economy—are still far from being realized. The vast majority of solid wastes are still burned or buried. MacBride argues that, since the emergence of the recycling movement in 1970, manufacturers of products that end up in waste have successfully prevented the implementation of more onerous, yet far more effective, forms of sustainable waste policy. Recycling as we know it today generates the illusion of progress while allowing industry to maintain the status quo and place responsibility on consumers and local government. MacBride offers a series of case studies in recycling that pose provocative questions about whether the current ways we deal with waste are really the best ways to bring about real sustainability and environmental justice. She does not aim to debunk or discourage recycling but to help us think beyond recycling as it is today.

Book Synopsis Recycling and the Politics of Urban Waste by : Matthew Gandy
Download or read book Recycling and the Politics of Urban Waste written by Matthew Gandy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The affluence of western society has given rise to unprecedented quantities of waste, presenting one of the most intractable environmental problems for contemporary society. This book examines recycling and municipal waste management in three major cities: London, New York and Hamburg. A range of political and economic issues are examined to illustrate how any reduction in the size of the waste stream in order to achieve more equitable and environmentally sustainable patterns of resource use is incompatible with the current emphasis in the use of the market for environmental protection. The case studies show how, contrary to the hopes of many environmentalists and policy makers, municipal waste management is moving steadily towards the profitable option of incineration with energy recovery, rather than the recycling of materials or waste reduction at source. The evidence suggests that the achievement of a more sustainable pattern of recycling and waste management policy would demand a fundamental change in public policy, to give government a more active role in environmental protection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides transdisciplinary analyses of the automotive plastics production and recycling system, including prognoses, scenarios and solutions for corporate sustainability management. A book on plastics, not written by a plastics guy. But a sustainability guy. Plastics schizophrenia and the automotive abyss: The industry is facing a severe challenge. It is the inevitable and promising change towards a sustainable economy. However, the automotive industry is primarily concerned with the CO2 emissions from cars when driving, while the rise of lightweight plastics, electric drive and heavy batteries make the production and end-of-life phase ever more important. Therefore, the currently increasing use of non-sustainable virgin plastics in cars has to be tackled. The plastics and the automotive industry now have a chance, and this chance is the Recycling Renaissance. This book offers: • Holistic and transdisciplinary overview on sustainability and automotive plastics from all angles including economy, ecology, technology, and politics with a focus on Europe • Concise analyses, prognoses, tools and a roadmap with solutions for companies, developed together with international experts from industry and academia • Strong scientific basis and independent research including a Europe-wide survey, expert interviews, and workshops • More than 80 illustrations and 15 tables including a SCOT analysis • Executive summaries after each chapter for fast reading “The uniqueness of this book lies within the different point of view on this topic from a critical, outstanding scientist.” - Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Book Synopsis Recycling of Offshore Concrete Structures by : fib Fédération internationale du béton
Download or read book Recycling of Offshore Concrete Structures written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report confirms that removal, re-use wholly or in part, and complete demolition and recycling of CGS (Concrete Gravity Structures) are technically feasible. Governmental policy is consistently moving towards rewarding those industries that contribute to environmentally friendly management. Recycled material is an environmentally friendly alternative that incurs reduced consumption of virgin material and less waste disposal. There is no reason to believe that offshore concrete should be less suitable for recycling than other concrete. For some platforms the most suitable vessel for carrying the topside ashore may prove to be the CGS itself, as it has to be removed from its position anyhow. A successful removal, however, requires a well planned and controlled operation, necessitating a profound knowledge and understanding of the structure, both in its technical and operational aspects. An important instrument to acquire such knowledge are the records kept during the platform's history describing the main parmeters and events. The report treats the aspects of re-use, removal, demolition methods and recycling of materials and refers to all known international and national regulations in this field, adding a comprehensive list of references and usable internet links.
