Book Synopsis Women’s Deliberation: The Heroine in Early Modern French Women’s Theater (1650–1750) by : Theresa Varney Kennedy
Download or read book Women’s Deliberation: The Heroine in Early Modern French Women’s Theater (1650–1750) written by Theresa Varney Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s Deliberation: The Heroine in Early Modern French Women’s Theater (1650–1750) argues that women playwrights question traditional views on women through their heroines. Denied the powers of cleverness, the authority of deliberation, and the right to speak, heroines were often excluded from central roles in plays by leading male playwrights from this period. Women playwrights, on the other hand, embraced the ideas necessary to expand the boundaries of female heroism. Heroines in plays from the mid-seventeenth through the mid-eighteenth centuries reflect a shift in mentalities toward rationality and female agency. I argue that the "deliberative heroine," emerging at the dawn of the eighteenth century, is the most fully developed, exuding all the characteristics of the modern-day heroine. Although she embodies many of the qualities of her heroine counterparts, she also responds to them. Only the deliberative heroine, based on Enlightenment ideals—such as women’s ability to rationalize and the complex interplay between reason and sentiment—truly liberates female characters from a history of traditional roles. Whereas other heroines act in accordance with social construct or on impulse, the "deliberative heroine" realizes the ideals of the seventeenth-century salons that petitioned for women to have "greater control over their own bodies" (DeJean 21). She is active, and her determination to follow through with her own line of reasoning—that involves both mind and heart—enables her to determine the outcome of events. In the end, this new generation of heroines ushered in an era where women playwrights could make their own contribution to dramatic works at the dawn of the Age of Enlightenment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1963: The author gives a clear and accurate account of the immense development of France as a colonial power which, in an incredibly short space of time, was to control one third of Africa. He drew his material not only from the scanty formal literature then available, but also by carefully evaluating and selecting from large mass of controversial material to be found in deliberate propaganda, parliamentary debates, and the often suspect offical documentation.

Book Synopsis Authority and Sexuality in Early Modern Burgundy (1550-1730) by : James R. Farr
Download or read book Authority and Sexuality in Early Modern Burgundy (1550-1730) written by James R. Farr and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-05 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sociocultural analysis of the relationships among law, religion, and sexual morality in Burgundy during the Catholic Reformation, this book is divided into two, interrelated parts: the world of prescription and the world of practice. The first part examines the construction of authority, focusing primarily upon Burgundy's dominant elite legal community. The second part of the book examines the deployment of authority, and its appropriation by French men and women. The new moral order focused on sexuality and the imposition of this order involved a legal contest over the disposition of bodies, both male and female, be they priests, courting couples, victims of seduction or rape, or prostitutes. James Farr's book offers an unusually fertile approach to study the link between sexuality and criminality.

Book Synopsis Democracy in Darkness by : Katlyn Marie Carter
Download or read book Democracy in Darkness written by Katlyn Marie Carter and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How debates over secrecy and transparency in politics during the eighteenth century shaped modern democracy Does democracy die in darkness, as the saying suggests? This book reveals that modern democracy was born in secrecy, despite the widespread conviction that transparency was its very essence. In the years preceding the American and French revolutions, state secrecy came to be seen as despotic—an instrument of monarchy. But as revolutionaries sought to fashion representative government, they faced a dilemma. In a context where gaining public trust seemed to demand transparency, was secrecy ever legitimate? Whether in Philadelphia or Paris, establishing popular sovereignty required navigating between an ideological imperative to eradicate secrets from the state and a practical need to limit transparency in government. The fight over this—dividing revolutionaries and vexing founders—would determine the nature of the world’s first representative democracies. Unveiling modern democracy’s surprisingly shadowy origins, Carter reshapes our understanding of how government by and for the people emerged during the Age of Revolutions.
