Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycrystalline alumina (Al2O3) possessing high total and in-line transmission in the visible range was prepared successfully by a combined high temperature hot forging and annealing operation. Transparency was found to be produced by a combination of several pore removal mechanisms active during deformation and primary recrystallization. A strong basal texture normal to the pressing direction was found for both deformation and recrystallization structures, and the high in-line transmission characteristics were thought to be due to a lowering of birefringent scattering because of this texture. Initial experiments were conducted to define the critical strain for recrystallization, and to date it is thought that this strain lies between 4 and 10 percent. Room and elevated temperature bend strengths of these materials were equivalent to opaque but dense pressure or pressureless sintered alumina having a comparable grain size.

Book excerpt: "Aluminium Oxide: Structure, Production and Applications opens with a study wherein it is proposed that, according to the electrolyte composition and the parameters of an applied electric signal, it is possible to obtain either barrier or porous oxide films with precisely controlled dimensions. The authors examine how exhaust gases purification and diesel oxidation catalysts are of paramount importance, since the requirements for the automobile emission control become more and more strict each year. Aluminum oxide has historically been used as a component of such purification systems. The subsequent study suggests that it is possible to affect the concentration of Lewis and Brønsted acids, the desired specific surface area, and the degree of crystallinity in catalytic processes"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the history of the concepts critical to the discovery and development of aluminum, its alloys and the anodizing process are reviewed to provide a foundation for the challenges, achievements, and understanding of the complex relationship between the aluminum alloy and the reactions that occur during anodic oxidation. Empirical knowledge that has long sustained industrial anodizing is clarified by viewing the process as corrosion science, addressing each element of the anodizing circuit in terms of the Tafel Equation. This innovative approach enables a new level of understanding and engineering control for the mechanisms that occur as the oxide nucleates and grows, developing its characteristic highly ordered structure, which impact the practical function of the anodic aluminum oxide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singel crystals of gold and gold-aluminum oxide were obtained by electrodeposition on a single crystal silver substrate according to the method developed by Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf. An annalysis of the factors determining the growth of the single crystals from the electrolyte indicates that the temperature and rate of growth of the deposit are the controlling factors rather than the purity or salt content of the bath itself. It was found that the films containing Al2O3 are much more stable to recrystallization than those of pure gold. Techniques for the preparation of the transmission specimens involving minimum coldworking were developed and the films examined in the electron microscope. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quartz, zeolites, gemstones, perovskite type oxides, ferrite, carbon allotropes, complex coordinated compounds and many moreùall products now being produced using hydrothermal technology. Handbook of Hydrothermal Technology brings together the latest techniques in this rapidly advancing field in one exceptionally useful, long-needed volume. The handbook provides a single source for understanding how aqueous solvents or mineralizers work under temperature and pressure to dissolve and recrystallize normally insoluble materials, and decompose or recycle any waste material. The result, as the authors show in the book, is technologically the most efficient method in crystal growth, materials processing, and waste treatment. The book gives scientists and technologists an overview of the entire subject including: ò Evolution of the technology from geology to widespread industrial use. ò Descriptions of equipment used in the process and how it works. ò Problems involved with the growth of crystals, processing of technological materials, environmental and safety issues. ò Analysis of the direction of today's technology. In addition, readers get a close look at the hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites, fluorides, sulfides, tungstates, and molybdates, as well as native elements and simple oxides. Delving into the commercial production of various types, the authors clarify the effects of temperature, pressure, solvents, and various other chemical components on the hydrothermal processes.

Book excerpt: High Temperature Oxides, Magnesia, Alumina, Beryllia Ceramics: Fabrication, Characterization and Properties is the third part of a series of four books on high temperature oxides. This text is divided into five chapters that deal with the research and technical advances in selected refractory oxides, such as magnesia, alumina, and beryllium oxide. Chapter 1 discusses the preparation, characterization, thermal and mechanical properties, and application to the electrical and electronic fields of beryllium oxide. Chapter 2 examines the mechanical behavior of single crystals of magnesia, including its dislocation motion and interactions, and crack nucleation and growth. Chapter 3 describes the significance of diffusive and mechanical properties of sintered alumina and magnesia. Chapter 4 deals with the process mechanisms, control, and limitations of hot-pressing, with particular emphasis on the practical applications of hot-pressed refractory oxides. Chapter 5 explores the possible benefits of hot-working, operational processes involved in such working, and the applications of fabricated oxides. This book is of great value to engineers, materials scientists, and students with advanced materials science courses.
