Book excerpt: Becoming a Choral Music Teacher: A Field Experience Workbook, Second Edition is a choral methods textbook that prepares students in Music Education to become middle school and high school choral music teachers. It emphasizes important musical skills, vocal pedagogy and repertoire suitable for secondary school choirs in order to provide future teachers with the critical experiences to be effective. Focusing equally on rehearsal strategies, auditions and classroom management, the book is also a "workbook" that requires the students’ active learning through participation in fieldwork. Students learn in a sequential and practical manner, beginning with the study of the middle school voice and progressing to the high school voice, through practice of theory with adolescents, followed by class reflection on common problems and solutions, and then continued practice. NEW to this Edition Updated references to NAfME, and new national and state standards and licensing rules More on the needs of Special Learners in the choral classroom Latest resources on classroom management theories and practice Expanded vocal warm-ups that incorporate body movement and aural skills training More on gender issues (including LGBT awareness), sociological impact and meanings of choral singing, and emerging knowledge of multicultural choral music Becoming a Choral Music Teacher: A Field Experience Workbook, Second Edition fully integrates the choral field experience for hands-on learning and reflection and allows the student to observe and teach the book’s principles.

Book excerpt: This study aimed to investigate what may cause males not to participate in middle school choral ensembles and singing. This led to identifying effective ways to recruit and retain males in middle school choir. Interviews were held with fifteen males that included five members who participated in chorus for many years, five in their first year, and five who did not take part in chorus. The students were selected based on their involvement in extracurricular activities and with a diverse group of backgrounds. The students all attended Rosemary Middle School and were in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. The study determined that many males who did not participate in chorus believed that it is a female activity. It also showed that whether a boy participated in elementary school chorus or extracurricular activities there was no bearing as to whether or not they participated in chorus. The majority of the males who participated in chorus also played sports while three of the non-chorus members played a musical instrument.

Book excerpt: :The purpose of this research was to gain information about the practices and problems that affect the recruitment and retention of adolescent males in the public middle school choral programs in St. Lucie County (Florida). The specific problems of the study were (1) to identify the attitudes of middle school boys toward participating in choral programs in St. Lucie County, (2) to identify the factors that influence a decline of male enrollment in the public middle school choral programs in St. Lucie County, and (3)to identify the strategies and practices used by choral educators to successfully recruit and retain males in the public middle school choral programs in St. Lucie County. The research was based on the results of two survey questionnaires that were designed to investigate the judgments and attitudes of 5 (100%) choral educators and 54(71%) boys enrolled in chorus, grades 6 – 8.Data findings were presented through frequencies, percentages, and verbatim responses using the Likert rating scale. Data analysis revealed that the majority of boys held positive attitudes toward singing especially with their friends. Evidence also showed that most boys were comfortable singing in front of girls but were scared to sing alone in front of their peers. The study found that contrary to the relationship described in much of the literature, most boys felt that chorus was "cool" for boys.Further data analysis found that male recruitment and retention was a major concern in the middle school choral programs as the total enrollment of boys in the entire school district was 18%. Respondents indicated that the following factors affected a decline of boys in the choral programs: (1) Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), (2) peer pressure,(3) gender role, (4) limited activities, (5) scheduling conflicts, (6) administrative support, and (7) dominating sports. The majority of choral educators responding to the survey indicated that they seldom provided a workshop specifically for boys (60%). Additionally, a variety of strategies and practices to consider when recruiting and retaining boys in the choral programs were offered, however, results indicated that the directors needed to apply more recruiting strategies and practices to successfully attract and motivate male adolescents."

This book was released on 2019 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examined the recruitment and retention of African American students in a Predominantly White Institution in the Southeast and the associated financial resources needed to do so. Critical Race Theory (CRT) was used to explore Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) related to African American students in higher education. The five prominent tenets of CRT as noted by Delgado & Stefancic (2012) and DeCuir & Dixson (2004) are: racism is normal, whiteness as property, interest convergence, social construction, and unique voice of color. SEM is a "comprehensive approach0́Œto achieving the optimal recruitment, retention and graduation of students" (Kalsbeek, 2013). Literature and empirical data suggest that institutions of higher education are more racially diverse after implementing a strategic plan that explicitly includes minority enrollment (Drew et al., 2015; Smith et al., 2015; Burt et al., 2016). Policies are only as great as the character and fortitude of the leadership in authority to implement and enforce change with sustainability. This case study found that African American recruitment and retention efforts were largely treated the same as recruiting and retaining White students. The participants did not identify any specific budgetary line items earmarked for African American recruitment and/or retention. The research revealed African American recruitment and retention efforts are negatively affected by the culture and climate of the institution, the politics of higher education, and the economic impact within society. Findings from the study suggest that African American recruitment efforts were largely the same as recruiting White students. African American students were primarily responsible for their own retention. Financial supports for recruitment and retention of African American students exist at the institutional level, yet the case study did not reveal funding specifically identified within the colleges, schools, institutes and/or units. Additionally, the study found a need for more communication between administrators, faculty and staff related to African American recruitment and retention.
