Book Synopsis Outdoor Recreation by : Charles I. Zinser
Download or read book Outdoor Recreation written by Charles I. Zinser and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1995-08-11 with total page 926 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no other nation on earth devotes as large a portion of its public lands to recreational use as the United States. And while millions of Americans flock to our national parks, forests, and other public lands each year, these areas are also major attractions for international visitors and an important source of foreign exchange. The allocation, location, planning, and management of public lands for recreational use is now a major activity within each of the nation's four major land-managing agencies, and in several smaller departments as well. This book presents an overview of the vast and diverse federal recreation system, its historical evolution, methods of management and development, and the different roles played by the National Park Service, the Forest Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. It explores concepts in land-use planning, examines relevant federal legislation, and presents federal concepts for preserving amenity resources. Rather than make an exhaustive presentation of current facilities and recreational opportunities, author Charles Zinser uses a case study approach to illustrate and analyze programs and development principles found in each of the major agencies. More than 300 tables, maps, and illustrations supplement the text. An entire chapter is devoted to the recreational resources of smaller federal agencies, including the Army Corps of Engineers, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, all of which permit various forms of water-related recreation on reservoirs under their control. Many people are surprised to learn that, in terms of recreational use, the Army Corps of Engineers is the number-two federal agency. Packed with helpful, practical, and authoritative information, Outdoor Recreation is a one-stop source on the availability, development, and management of recreational resources within the federal system. It is a first-rate reference for anyone involved in forestry, geography, wildland or watershed management, land-use planning and development, or creating recreational facilities. It is also an ideal textbook for courses in geography and recreational use of public lands. The most complete guide available to the federal recreation system The system of federal lands devoted to outdoor recreation is as diverse bureaucratically as it is geographically. At least eight federal agencies administer recreational resources from mountain to seashore, from desert to glacier, in virtually every state and territory of the nation. This one-stop sourcebook offers complete information on the acquisition, development, management, and protection of these resources, including: Extensive coverage of recreational resources administered by federal land-managing agencies that control one fourth of our national territory A review of the basic concepts of land-use planning An examination of the federal legislation that created current programs and facilities Numerous maps, statistical tables, and illustrations not available from any other source Case studies that illustrate the practical impact of federal policies and concepts Examples of federal plans for protecting these resources, including: the National Wilderness Preservation System, National Trails System, and the National Wild and Scenic River System

Book Synopsis Forest Recreation by : Robert W. Douglass
Download or read book Forest Recreation written by Robert W. Douglass and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Recreation focuses on the increasing consideration of forests as destination for recreation. The book aims to put together the findings of researchers on the issues and problems that confront forest recreation administrators and the demands of the public. The selection also offers guidance to forest land managers with respect to the basic requirements of forest recreation as well as in planning. The book starts by defining outdoor recreation, including history and the factors affecting this type of recreation. The text then gives information on the number of forest recreation areas and the distribution of these areas, as well as the underlying legislation covering outdoor recreation. Forest recreation planning is noted, which includes a discussion of a state-wide comprehensive outdoor recreation plan. The book also discusses site selection and the development of recreation areas. Classification of areas in forests is also described, which includes picnic grounds, camping sites, and trails. Sanitation in forest recreation areas is also discussed. The text can best serve the interest of forest land managers, forest technicians, foresters, park technicians, and private landowners who are responsible in planning, developing, and administering forest recreation places.
Book Synopsis Conceptualizing and Measuring Demand for Recreation on National Forests by : Brian E. Garber-Yonts
Download or read book Conceptualizing and Measuring Demand for Recreation on National Forests written by Brian E. Garber-Yonts and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis examines the problem of measuring demand for recreation on national forests and other public lands. Current measures of recreation demand in Forest Service resource assessments and planning emphasize population-level participation rates and activity-based economic values for visitor days. Alternative measures and definitions of recreation demand are presented, including formal economic demand and multiattribute preferences. Recreation assessments from national-level Renewable Resources Planning Act Assessments to site-level demand studies are reviewed to identify methods used for demand analysis at different spatial scales. A finding throughout the multiple scales of analysis, with the exception of site-level studies, is that demand measures are not integrated with supply measures. Supply analyses, in the context of resource assessments, have taken the form of mapped spatial inventories of recreation resources on the national forests, based on the classification of recreational settings according to the opportunities they produce (e.g., the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum). As such, integration of demand analysis with these measures of supply requires measuring the demand for recreational settings. To support management and planning decisions, recreation demand analysis must also permit projection of changes in visitation at multiple scales as changes in management and policy alter recreational settings, and as the demographics and behavior of the user base changes through time. Although this is currently being done through many formal economic studies of site demand, methods are needed that scale up to higher levels of spatial aggregation. Several areas for research, development and application of improved methods for demand analysis are identified, and improved methods for spatially explicit models of recreation visitation and demand are identified as a priority area for research.
