Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreation of an Indian Official The conditions of life in England are so different from the conditions of life in India, that I should not be surprised if the title Recreations, ' applied to the literary labour of this book, were gently cavilled at. And yet no other title would represent so accurately the circumstances under which its contents were written In Europe, ' if I may be allowed to quote from my own reflections in another work in Europe, where there is so much to tempt a man into the sun shine and Open air; where the streams invite the angler the slopes of the mountains, the botanist; the forests, the sportsman; and Where the merry laugh and innocent smiles of the daughters of the land invite all, it must require the virtue of a St. Anthony to persevere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sportsman's Book for India And if the India of to-day may still claim to be reckoned very high among the sporting countries Of the world, its Opportunities forty years ago must have been fourfold. Swift, who, with all his virtues, could scarcely have been a joyous playmate, was wont to de scribe the majority of our sports and games as imitations of fighting; and it is certain that the greater part of Indian sport, as it is understood to-day, is made up of shooting, fishing, hunting and polo, in all of which some faint semblance of warfare might perhaps be traced by an essayist skilled in such exercises. The present hand book, however, ranges Over an even wider field of recreation, taking cognisance of all manner of minor sports, games and physical exercises on land and water which help not only to redeem the monotony of station life, but also to fortify the European constitution against the ravages of a climate for which Nature never intended it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles and Recollections of an Indian Official The Editor's notes, being designed merely to explain and illustrate the text, so as to render the book fully intelligible and helpful' to readers of the present day, have been com pressed into the narrowest possible limits. Even India changes, and observations and criticisms which were perfectly true when recorded can no longer be safely applied without explanation to the India of to-day. The Author's few notes are distinguished by his initials. A Copious analytical index has been compiled. The biblio graphy is as complete as careful inquiry could make it, but it is possible that some anonymous papers by the Author, published in periodicals, may have escaped notice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leisure is a corollary to pleasure. Essays in this historical exploration trace how leisure and recreation were often imagined and celebrated during premodern times, from the ancient to the precolonial period. This book takes into account the differential access to leisure and pleasure based on class and gender where masculinity is projected through manly sports and femininity though beauty and indulgence in the projection of recreation, entertainment and luxury. The counter-discourse representing labour for those who cater for this leisure is invisibilized as is their transactional nature. The volume dwells on the attitudes, prescribed and proscribed, and brings to the fore the differences across religious ideologies such as Brahmanism, Buddhism, Jaina and Muslim in various periods. Further it looks at leisure in the various classes and cultural spaces such as the elite, women, the king in the bed chamber, the court with dancing girls, public areas such as orchards and gardens and performance spaces.

Book excerpt: Moving Words provides a direct line into the most pressing issues in contemporary dance scholarship, as well as insights into ways in which dance contributes to and creates culture. Instead of representing a single viewpoint, the essays in this volume reflect a range of perspectives and represent the debates swirling within dance. The contributors confront basic questions of definition and interpretation within dance studies, while at the same time examining broader issues, such as the body, gender, class, race, nationalism and cross-cultural exchange. Specific essays address such topics as the black male body in dance, gender and subversions in the dances of Mark Morris, race and nationalism in Martha Graham's 'American Document', and the history of oriental dance.
