This book was released on 1958 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique absorption process for recovery of small quaintities of uranium hexafluoride vapors from a highly reactive gas stream is discussed along with the design criteria that were developed as a result of laboratory and pilot plant tests. The chemistry of thc absorption proccss is presentcd with a summary of the data collccted during laboratory and pilot plant testing. A description is also given of the plant scale absorption systom now in operation at the UF6 manufacturing plant of the Union Carbide Nuclear Company at Paducah, Kentucky. The vent gases from the UF6 manufacturing process at Paducah contain appreciable quantities of oxygen and nitrogen, some hydrofluoric acid and elemental fluorine, and small quantities of valuable uranium hexafluoride. To permit recovery of the UF6, these vent gases are passed through a fluidized bed of green salt (uranium tetrafluoride) where essentially all of the UF6 and a portion of the F2 react to from solid uranium fluoride intermediates. When operated at 400SDEF, as much as 0.38 pounds of UF6 or its equivalent of F2 can be absorbed per pound of green salt. The green salt containing the absorbed UF6 and F2 can either be returned to the UF6 manufacturing plant or regenerated with hydrogen. (auth).

This book was released on 1961 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A process scheme for the recovery of uranium from fuel elements has been developed. The scheme combines continuous fluid-bed drying and fluoride volatility techniques after initial dissolution of the fuel element in the appropriate aqueous system, hence the designation ADF, Aqueous Dry Fluorination Process. The application of this process to the recovery of uranium from highly enriched, low uranium-zirconium alloy plate-type fuels is described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments conducted in a 2 1/2-inch diameter reactor have demonstrated that the continuous fluorination of uranium tetrafluoride to hexafluoride with elemental fluorine in a fluidized bed is possible. Practicable fluorine efficiencies and conversion rates were attained with good temperature control in experiments with refined uranium tetrafluoride. Runs made with crude uranium tetrafluoride, derived from the reduction and hydro-fluorination of ore concentrates produced by the acid-leach process, indicated that these also can be processed at satisfactory rates and efficiencies. Uranium tetrafluoride derived from carbonate-leached ore concentrate gave a lower production rate and was more difficult to process because of sintering tendencies.

Book excerpt: Experiments were carried out to determine the extent and rate of separation of mixtures of uranium hexafluoride and plutonium hexafluoride by selective thermal decomposition. Gaseous mixtures of uranium hexafluoride, plutonium hexafluoride, and helium were circulated for varying lengths of time through nickel vessels packed with nickel wool at temperatures of 150, 200, and 300 deg C. The initial ratios of uranium hexafluoride to plutonium hexafluoride in the mixtures were of the order of 10 to 1. The gas phase was analyzed for uranium and plutonium before and after circulation. The amounts of uranium and plutonium in the solid compounds deposited in the vessels were also determined. Passage of the mixtures through the hot vessels resulted in the removal of 99.5 to 99.9% of the plutonium. The solid product remaining in the vessels was plutonium tetrafluoride containing 0.09 to 1.3% uranium. The separation of plutonium hexafluoride from uranium hexafluoride by selective thermal decomposition is applicable to fluid bed fluoride volatility processes for the recovery of fissile material from reactor fuels.

This book was released on 1959 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-step, continuous, fluid-bed process for the conversion of uranium hexafluoride to uranium dioxide was successfully carried out in preliminary experiments in a 1 1/2-inch-diameter Monel reactor. Hydrogen and steam were used for simultaneous reduction and pyrohydrolysis reactions carried out at 600 deg C, resulting in the formation of a dense coating of dioxide on the starting bed of uranium dioxide. The effects of uranium hexafluoride feed rate and reactant excesses on conversion were investigated. Results of fluid-bed steam pyrohydrolysis runs on uranium tetrafluoride are also presented.

This book was released on 1963 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, dry process for the production of uranium dioxide powder from uranium hexafluoride by fluidization and particle-coating techniques was developed. The process involves direct conversion of uranium hexafluoride to a solid, UO2F2, by hydrolysis with steam and the reduction of the UO2F2 to the dioxide by reaction with was carried out in 3-in.-diameter Monel reactors.
