In Death and Ritual in Renaissance Florence, Sharon Strocchia shows how these death rites - especially civic funerals - reflected Florence's quick rise to commercial wealth in the fourteenth century and steady progression toward displays of princely power in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Strocchia begins by examining the basic components of civic funerary rites and their symbolic meaning. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, she then traces the changes and continuities of these rites throughout the Renaissance. She shows how the rise of funeral pomp in the late fourteenth century as linked to social mobility, the redistribution of wealth, corporate politics, and the psychology of the post-plague decades. She analyses the impact of "elitism, statism, and civism" on civic and family rites after 1400 and charts the social effects of rising assumption trends. It begins with the proposition that the intervention of ICRC in internal armed conflicts led to compromises in neutrality, and questioned the autonomy and independence of the organization. The book also argues that the field operations of the international humanitarian organizations during internal armed conflicts are dependent on the authority exercised by the state in whose territory the conflict persists. The ICRC’s involvement in Sri Lanka and Sudan provides empirical support to validate these propositions and arguments. The cases also show that for the ICRC, it is hard to be neutral and impartial in situations of internal armed conflicts and such conflicts present formidable challenges to maintain its organization autonomy as well. The larger purpose of the book is to contribute to the policy re/formulation of the international humanitarian organizations in internal armed conflict, the most significant challenge in the field at present.

Throughout the ages, restraint in warfare has been informed by religious and ethical considerations, chivalry and class, and, increasingly since the mid-19th century, a body of customary and treaty law variously referred to as the laws of war, the law of armed conflict (LOAC) or international humanitarian law (IHL). As they evolved from the mid-19th century, these laws were increasingly underpinned by humanitarianism, then in the mid-20th century, were assumed to be universal. But violations of these restraints are also as old as conflict itself. The history of conflict is replete with examples of exclusions from protections designed to moderate warfare. This edited volume explores the degree to which protections in modern warfare might be informed by notions of 'civility' and 'barbarism', or, to put it another way, asks if only those deemed to be civilised are afforded protections prescribed by the laws of war?
