In terms of gender, 13. 3 million boys and 2 million girls are involuntarily subjected to sexual mutilation every year. While it is tempting to quantify and compare the amount of tissue removed from either gender, no ethical justification can be made for removing any amount of flesh from the body of another person. The violation of human rights implicit in sexual mutilation is identical for any gender. The violation occurs with the first cut into another person 's body. Although mutilation is a strong term, it precisely and accurately describes a condi tion denoting "any disfigurement or injury by removal or destruction of any conspicuous or essential part of the body. " While such terms as "circumcision" and "genital cutting" are less threatening to our sensitivities, they ultimately do a disservice by masking the fact of what is actually being done to babies and children. Although the courageous example of the survivors of sexual mutilation indicates that humans can certainly live and even re produce without all of their external sexualorgans, this biological phenomenon does not, however, justify subjecting a person to sexual mutilation. The remarkable resilience of the human body is a testament to the importance nature places on reproduction rather than a vindication for surgical practices that compromise this function.

Furthermore, in highlighting the diversity in pre-Christian, pre-Islamic regional beliefs and practices that extend beyond the simplistic political arguments of the current dominant narratives, the study shows that for millennia complex indigenous institutions have bound people together beyond the labels of Christianity and Islam; they have sustained peace through cultural exchange and tolerance (if not always complete acceptance). Through recent archaeological and ethnographic research, the concepts, landscapes, materials and rituals believed to be associated with the indigenous and shared culture of the Sky-God belief are examined. The author makes sense, for the first time, of the relationship between the notion of sacred fertility and a number of regional archaeological features and on-going ancient practices including FGM, spirit possessions, and other physically invasive practices and the ritual hunt. The book explores one of the most important pilgrimage centres in Somaliland and Somalia, the sacred landscape of Saint Aw-Barkhadle, founded ca. 12th century AD. It is believed to be the burial place of the rulers of the first Muslim Ifat and Awdal dynasties in this region, and potentially the lost first capital of Awdal kingdom before Harar. This ritual centre is seen as a ‘microcosm’ of the ancient Horn of Africa with its exceptional multi-religious heritage, through which the author lays out a locally appropriate archaeological interpretational framework, the "Ritual Set," also applied here to the Ethiopian sites of Tiya, Sheikh Hussein Bale, Aksum and Lalibela, setting these places against a wider historical background of indigenous Sky-God belief. This archaeological study of sacred landscapes, stelae traditions, ancient Christian and medieval Muslim centres of Northeast Africa is the first to put forward a theoretical and analytical framework for the interpretation of the shared regional heritage and the indigenous archaeology of the region. It will be invaluable to archaeologists, anthropologists, historians and policymakers interested in Africa and beyond.

Covering the entire spectrum of self-mutilation, from wrist cutting to autocastration and self-inflicted eye removal, this is one of the few books since Karl Menninger's Man against Himself (1938) to comprehensively address this disturbing phenomenon. The book is divided into three sections that cover theory, research, and treatment. Part I focuses on the scope of the problem by reviewing the forms of self-mutilation behavior reported in the literature and analyzing its incidence as reported in a number of Western countries. In two particularly important chapters--one theoretical, the other a review of the empirical literature including the authors' own research--the book makes a crucial but difficult distinction between self-mutilative behavior and suicide attempts. The authors conclude that self-mutilation and suicide should be understood and treated as separate clinical problems. In Part II self-mutilation is described as it occurs in different clinical populations. Results from the authors' study of adolescent self-mutilators identifies key childhood and adolescent antecedents to the behavior. Another study by the authors provides the first empirical evidence for the frequently reported phenomenon of self-mutilative contagion. In addition, a detailed case example of a contagion episode illustrates how such ``clusters'' of self-mutilation develop. This section also offers extended discussion of the distinctive features of self-mutilation in borderline personalities, psychotics, retarded and autistic individuals. Several case examples map the idiosyncratic determinants of these behaviors for each specific group. Part III covers treatment. The authors present new and specific guidelines for the cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalytic, family, and group therapy of mutilators and identify the clinical strategies and responses likely to be counterproductive. The volume ends with a cogent discussion of how these modalities can be integrated into a comprehensive, multimodal treatment program. Designed for a broad range of mental health professionals, including psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, nurses, and paraprofessionals, SELF-MUTILATION will be invaluable for those affiliated with psychiatric inpatient facilities, group homes, residential treatment centers, and schools.
