Book excerpt: Lawrence Driscoll's fresh examination of the meaning of drugs from the Victorians to the present asks us to listen to historical and current voices whose positions on drugs are at variance with our "truths." Driscoll draws on the work of figures as diverse as William Burroughs, Sigmund Freud, Conan Doyle, and Anna Kavan to shed light on different or silenced ways of talking about drugs and to offer us a historical counter-memory. The result of his work is to unsettle and disturb the familiar parameters that frame our discussion of drugs, revealing that others are available: positions which expose our own constructions as surprisingly limited.

Book Synopsis America's Longest War by : Steven B. Duke
Download or read book America's Longest War written by Steven B. Duke and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's war on drugs. It makes headlines, tops political agendas and provokes powerful emotions. But is it really worth it? That’s the question posed by Steven Duke and Albert Gross in this groundbreaking book. They argue that America’s biggest victories in the war on drugs are the erosion of our constitutional rights, the waste of billions of dollars and an overwhelmed court system. After careful research and thought, they make a strong case for the legalization of drugs. It’s a radical idea, but has its time come?
Book Synopsis Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs by : Grace E. Jackson
Download or read book Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs written by Grace E. Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: -- Are patients aware of the fact that pharmacological therapies stress the brain in ways which may prevent or postpone symptomatic and functional recovery ? ==================================================== Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs: A Guide for Informed Consent is a critical appraisal of the medications which an estimated 20% of Americans consume on a regular (and sometimes involuntary) basis. It is the philosophically, epidemiologically, and scientifically supported revelation of how and why psychiatry’s drug therapies have contributed to a standard of care which frequently does more to harm than to cure. Extensively researched and documented, the book addresses: -- the process by which psychiatric drugs reach the market -- the history and philosophy of Evidence Based Medicine -- the common flaws in research methodologies which negate the validity of the psychiatric RCT (Randomized Controlled Trial) -- the problem of allostatic load (how drugs stress the body) -- the history, long term effects, and utility of the drugs used to suppress symptoms of depression, psychosis, inattention and hyperactivity -- the effectiveness of alternatives to medication Rethinking Psychiatric Drugs: A Guide for Informed Consent exposes the current crisis in medical ethics and epistemology, and attempts to restore to psychiatry an authentically informed consent to care.

Download or read book Blowing Smoke written by Michael J. Reznicek and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blowing Smoke argues that we are losing the drug war because of our devotion to the disease model of substance abuse. That model has become the driving force for our two main strategies in the war: prohibition laws and drug rehab. The book traces the history and science behind each to show how they paradoxically enable drug use.
Book Synopsis Rethinking Our War on Drugs by : Gary L. Fisher
Download or read book Rethinking Our War on Drugs written by Gary L. Fisher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-09-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Drug Control Policy has failed its two major functions (supply reduction and demand reduction) due to faulty assumptions regarding nearly every aspect of the alcohol and drug fields, charges author Fisher. Yet in spite of overwhelming evidence of this failure policy makers have strongly resisted discussing major changes to the assumptions that underly current policy, because of political pressure, bias and philosophical intransigence, he adds. Fisher discusses controversial topics and defends uncommon approaches in chapters focused on subjects including legalization, harm reduction, the futility of supply reduction, the problem of underage drinking and effectiveness of treatment and prevention. He proposes a new national policy for drug control, including elimination of the war metaphor, inclusion of alcohol in the mandate, conceptualization of addiction as a public health problem, utilization of harm reduction principles to guide policy and discontinuation of approaches that isolate drug and alcohol problems from their connection to broader social issues such as poverty. In this work, the premises of the current National Drug Control Strategy are challenged, and both Democratic and Republican administrations across the last 10 years are critically examined. Statements of the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Strategy are critiqued. Major points include that there is no evidence the NDCS has achieved any of its goals, that harm reduction should be its guiding principle, and supply reduction should not be part of the national strategy.
Book Synopsis Rethinking Drug Use in Sport by : Bob Stewart
Download or read book Rethinking Drug Use in Sport written by Bob Stewart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug free sport is an unattainable aspiration. In this critical, paradigm-shifting reappraisal of contemporary drug policy in sport, Bob Stewart and Aaron Smith argue that drug use in sport is an inexorable consequence of the nature, structure and culture of sport itself. By de-mythologising and de-moralising the assumptions that prop up current drug management controls, and re-emphasising the importance of the long-term well being and civil rights of the athlete, they offer a powerful argument for creating a legitimate space for drug use in sport. The book offers a broad ranging overview of the social and commercial pressures impelling drug use, and maps the full historical and social extent of the problem. With policy analysis at the centre of the discussion, the book explores the complete range of social, management, policy, scientific, technological and health issues around drugs in sport, highlighting the irresolvable tension between the zero-tolerance model as advanced by WADA and the harm-reduction approach adopted by drug education and treatment agencies. While there are no simple solutions, as long as drugs use is endemic in wider society the authors argue that a more nuanced and progressive approach is required in order to safeguard and protect the health, social liberty and best interests of athletes and sports people, as well as the value of sport itself.
Book Synopsis Rethinking Medications by : Jerry Avorn
Download or read book Rethinking Medications written by Jerry Avorn and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2025-04-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading medical expert explains why many medications Americans take are poorly effective, overpriced, or pose unwarranted risks—and what we can do to fix that. Groundbreaking research has given us many remarkable new medications, but the American drug regulation process, once the envy of the world, is being seriously compromised. Under pressure from the pharmaceutical industry and Congress, the FDA has been lowering its approval standards and allowing poorly effective or risky drugs to enter the market—at the same time that our prescription prices have become the highest in the world. In Rethinking Medications, Dr. Avorn explains how we got here and what we can do to ensure that our medicines are reliably effective, safe, and affordable. Part of the problem, Dr. Avorn points out, is the power of pharma’s biggest-in-Washington lobbying clout, which influences members of Congress from both parties. Drug companies’ considerable leverage is extended by FDA’s growing dependence on fees the industry pays to get its drugs approved. Meanwhile, our highest-anywhere drug prices put needed medications beyond the reach of many patients, adding pressure to the funding of medical care for everyone. The increasingly profit-driven US health care system shapes the way doctors prescribe medications—sometimes to the detriment of patients. Based on his decades of practice and research at Harvard Medical School and his role at the center of many of these controversies, Dr. Avorn presents compelling clinical illustrations of these issues across the medical spectrum: from cancer drugs to opioids, from treatments for rare diseases to psychedelics. Throughout, he offers practical steps that consumers, policymakers, and practitioners can take to fix these problems.

Download or read book Rethinking the War on Drugs in Ireland written by Tim Murphy and published by Cork University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 108 pages. Drawing on international drug policy research, the author examines the Irish policy in its historical, medical, social and political context. The legitimacy of current policy is severely undermined by such an examination, and the ineffectiveness of the war suggests that new options must be considered.
Book Synopsis Rethinking US Drug Policy by : Peter Hakim
Download or read book Rethinking US Drug Policy written by Peter Hakim and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans believe that their country's forty-year 'war on drugs' has failed. Yet, instead of a serious national discussion of how to reform US drug control strategies, there remains a silent tolerance of ineffective, socially harmful laws, institutions, and policies. What is most needed now is a far-reaching debate on alternative approaches that could reduce the risks and damage from the trafficking and abuse of illegal drugs. That was also the conclusion of a highly-regarded report prepared by a distinguished group of Latin American presidents and other leaders. This report proposes six US government initiatives that would set the stage for a thorough rethinking of US drug policy.
Book Synopsis Forensic Psychology Reconsidered by : David Polizzi
Download or read book Forensic Psychology Reconsidered written by David Polizzi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forensic psychology is where psychology meets the criminal justice system. An understanding of the intersection of criminal law and psychological issues relating to criminal responsibility is critical for criminal justice students. This accessible text focuses on the criminal law implications of forensic psychology as it relates to topics such as competency to stand trial, state of mind at the time of the crime, suicide by cop, and involuntary psychiatric medication administered in custody. Unlike more traditional texts on this topic, which are primarily concerned with the clinical practice of forensic psychology, this book focuses on critical thinking as it relates to these topics. Each chapter presents a critical analysis of the topic under study, going beyond merely identifying the legal parameters of criminal responsibility to explore the ethical, philosophical, and theoretical foundations of that concept.

Book Synopsis Chaos Reconsidered by : Robert Jervis
Download or read book Chaos Reconsidered written by Robert Jervis and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-04 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shock of Donald Trump’s election caused many observers to ask whether the liberal international order—the system of institutions and norms established after World War II—was coming to an end. The victory of Joe Biden, a committed institutionalist, suggested that the liberal order would endure. Even so, important questions remained: Was Trump an aberration? Is Biden struggling in vain against irreparable changes in international politics? What does the future hold for the international order? The essays in Chaos Reconsidered answer those questions. Leading scholars assess the domestic and global effects of the Trump and Biden presidencies. The historians put the Trump years and Biden’s victory in historical context. Regional specialists evaluate U.S. diplomacy in Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Others foreground topics such as global right-wing populism, the COVID-19 pandemic, racial inequality, and environmental degradation. International relations theorists reconsider the nature of international politics, pointing to deficiencies in traditional IR methods for explaining world events and Trump’s presidency in particular. Together, these experts provide a comprehensive analysis of the state of U.S. alliances and partnerships, the durability of the liberal international order, the standing and reputation of the United States as a global leader, the implications of China’s assertiveness and Russia’s aggression, and the prospects for the Biden administration and its successors.
