Finalist for the 2017 Book of the Year Award by the Chicago Writers Association “A book that is hard to put down.” —Jerusalem Post “This book confirms Annette Gendler as an indispensable Jewish voice for our time." —Yossi Klein Halevi, author of Like Dreamers "The ghosts of the past haunt a woman’s search for herself in this thoughtful, poignant memoir about the transformative power of love and faith.” —Hillary Jordan, author of Mudbound, now a Netflix movie “An exquisitely written conversion story which expounds upon personal and collective identity.” —Washington Independent Review of Books “A compelling, gracefully written memoir about the impact of the past on the present.” —Michael Steinberg, author of Still Pitching History was repeating itself when Annette fell in love with Harry, a Jewish man, the son of Holocaust survivors, in Germany in 1985. Her Great-Aunt Resi had been married to a Jew in Czechoslovakia before World War II―a marriage that, while happy, put the entire family in mortal danger once the Nazis took over their hometown in 1938. Annette and Harry’s love, meanwhile, was the ultimate nightmare for Harry’s family. Not only was their son considering marrying a non-Jew, but a German. Weighed down by the burdens of their family histories, Annette and Harry kept their relationship secret for three years, until they could forge a path into the future and create a new life in Chicago. Annette found a spiritual home in Judaism―a choice that paved the way toward acceptance by Harry’s family, and redemption for some of the wounds of her own family’s past.

Book excerpt: What does it mean to become rooted in the land? How can we become better relatives to our greatest teacher, the Earth? Becoming Rooted invites us to live out a deeply spiritual relationship with the whole community of creation and with Creator. Through meditations and ideas for reflection and action, Randy Woodley, an activist, author, scholar, and Cherokee descendant, recognized by the Keetoowah Band, guides us on a one-hundred-day journey to reconnect with the Earth. Woodley invites us to come away from the American dream--otherwise known as an Indigenous nightmare--and get in touch with the water, land, plants, and creatures around us, with the people who lived on that land for thousands of years prior to Europeans' arrival, and with ourselves. In walking toward the harmony way, we honor balance, wholeness, and connection. Creation is always teaching us. Our task is to look, and to listen, and to live well. She is teaching us now.

Book excerpt: The Unfortunate Dutchman is a tale of the many trials and tribulations faced by Jacob van Kal, an employee of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), during this travels to the Far East and his return to Holland at the end of the 18th century. It tells of his journey together with his family to Batavia, then the seat of the VOC’s power in the East, but only to find that he brought them to their doom as they contracted and died unknown tropical diseases. Unable to break the bond of his employment, he was transferred to a relatively unimportant Dutch colony in Malacca. There, he remarried but he eventually became entwined in tussle with the colony’s governor and it led him to be imprisoned and ultimately dismissed from his employment. Upon Jacob van Kal’s return to Holland, he initiated legal proceedings and he was granted compensation on what would be an astronomical payout from the Dutch government. Jacob’s curse of misfortunes surpasses the tolerances of the normal man but his tragedy tells an amazing story of his travels and experiences in the East Indies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eurasians at the Grassroots - Vol.1 is a collection of short stories regarding Eurasians and the memories of Eurasians. Its purpose is to collect and publish stories as a collective work about Eurasians, by Eurasians and for Eurasians. It is intended for this publication to consist of a collection of stories about the background, history, culture and heritage of the average Eurasian family. It is not intended for this publication to be about famous or historical Eurasian figures, but to include stories from the grassroots of the Eurasian society. The stories were contributed by people from Malaysia and outside Malaysia; and about all aspects of Eurasian heritage and culture from Malaysia and all over the world. Most people understand the term Eurasian as simply a hybrid between European and Asian. Many more do not understand the term at all and others simply find it curious why there is a need to categorise such a race at all. In this part of the world, Eurasians refers to people of mixed Asian and European ancestry. They are descended from colonial times of the Portuguese, Dutch and British. The Portuguese descendants, who mostly have their roots in Malacca, call themselves Kristang. There are also Dutch and British descent Eurasians in Malaysia and Singapore. However, there are also Eurasians whose ancestors were from other parts of Europe, such as Spain, Germany and France, who came out East with the ships of the Colonial powers of their time. We must not also leave out the Eurasians in The Netherlands who came from Indonesia. From an article received, we now also know that there were Eurasians from China. These days, in the advent of a globalised world, there are Eurasians living in practically every corner of the globe. Therefore, it is a joy to find that we have here contributors from near and far. There are articles from those in Malaysia, Singapore, as well as from Australia, The Netherlands and USA. This makes a good start to what should be the first in a series of articles on the Eurasians and we look forward to expand the project in the future to collect more of such stories. It will help to provide a better understanding of the heritage and culture of the Eurasians and a glimpse to view our many similarities. It also provides valued information on the many individuals and sub-groups of Eurasians for the sake of putting their stories on record for the benefit of the future generations.

Warrrior Goddess Training was a book that taught women to see themselves as perfect just the way they are, to resist society's insistence that they seek value, wholeness and love through something outside themselves, such as a husband, children, boyfriend, career or a spiritual path. In her work, Amara challenges women to be warrior goddesses, to be women who: • Venture out to find themselves • Combat fear and doubt • Reclaim their power and vibrancy • Demonstrate their strength of compassion and fierce love This is a great companion to Warrior Goddess Training. It is for anyone who wants to explore and practice the principles found in the first book more deeply.

Book excerpt: Heart Imagery - A Path to Enlightenment is a continuation of the book This Now is Eternity, revealing exercises and meditations related to the most ancient spiritual system: Heart Imagery. It is a treasure full of advice, meditations and exercises that come directly from two of the last Great Masters of Heart Imagery. These Masters lived in the Tibetan area, but that isn’t relevant. Like other Great Masters of Imagery (Anastasia from Russia, Colette Aboulker-Muscat from Jerusalem and Ana Pricop from Romania), the location and the time during which they lived was of no consequence. They were able to change anything: the past, the present and the future. They could reverse any action or thought. This is beyond our understanding. Remember that everything around you is a dream and that you can awaken at any moment if you really wish to. Daniel Mitel For more information, visit: www.danielmitel.com & www.heartimagery.org

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France is one of the most visited countries in the world -- and one of the least known. This book takes you beyond the superficial coverage of conventional guidebooks -- history, architecture, etc. -- in search of the deeper truths. A Guide to Mystical France takes you deep under the psychic skin of France into the invisible dimensions that our materialistic world does its best to ignore. Science stops at the most interesting questions. To describe, say a painted prehistoric cave as a sacred space used for ritual is to beg more questions than it answers. It is impossible to fully appreciate the cathedral of Notre-Dame, Mont St Michel, or the alignments of Carnac if you do not understand the reasons these structures were built and they way they have been used over the centuries. The book makes no assumptions. The reader is not required to believe anything. He is merely pointed in the direction of the invisible and the hidden and left to judge for himself. You get much more out of a visit if you look for what isn’t there as well as what is. Only by engaging with such enigmas in an open-minded, non-logical way can we begin to unravel them. This approach also makes sightseeing more satisfying and more meaningful. Covered here are a multitude of fascinating themes: the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, Black Virgins, prehistoric cave paintings, labyrinths, ley-lines, symbolism and sacred geometry, the tarot, etc. The backdrops for the drama includes such legendary places as Chartres, Rennes-le-Chateau, churches carved out of the rock and mountain sanctuaries. The cast list, meanwhile, includes Templars, Cathars, mystics, Gurdjieff, King Arthur, Nostradamus and alchemists such as the enigmatic Fulcanelli (who is rumoured to be immortal).
