Book excerpt: LES TRAVAUX DE RECHERCHE QUE J'AI MENES DURANT LA PREPARATION DE MA THESE DE DOCTORAT ONT TRAIT AU DOMAINE DE LA VISION ARTIFICIELLE. ILS REPOSENT SUR L'UTILISATION D'UN SYSTEME DE VISION ARTIFICIELLE MULTI-OCULAIRE ET DU MODELE 3D DE L'OBJET POLYEDRIQUE OBSERVE. LES PRINCIPAUX APPORTS SCIENTIFIQUES CONTENUS DANS CETTE THESE CONCERNENT: L'IDENTIFICATION DES OBJETS OBSERVES. POUR CELA, NOUS AVONS DEVELOPPE UNE TECHNIQUE SPECIFIQUE FONDEE SUR LA MISE EN CORRESPONDANCES ENTRE LES PRIMITIVES DE LA SCENE OBSERVEE ET LES ELEMENTS GEOMETRIQUES DU MODELE DES OBJETS POTENTIELLEMENT PRESENTS. AFIN DE REDUIRE LE CARACTERE HAUTEMENT COMBINATOIRE DE CETTE PHASE D'APPARIEMENT, UN ENCHAINEMENT DE PROCESSUS A ETE CONCU PERMETTANT D'EXTRAIRE, DES IMAGES DELIVREES PAR LE CAPTEUR, DES PRIMITIVES COMPLEXES CORRESPONDANT A DES ENSEMBLES DE SEGMENTS CONNEXES COPLANAIRES OU DES TRIPLETS D'ARETES CONCOURANTES. LA PHASE DE RECONNAISSANCE PROPREMENT DITE EST REALISEE A L'AIDE D'OUTILS EMPRUNTES A LA THEORIE DES GRAPHES. LA LOCALISATION DES OBJETS OBSERVES. LORS DE L'ETUDE DE CETTE PROBLEMATIQUE, NOUS AVONS, DANS UN PREMIER TEMPS, ETENDU AU CAS MULTI-OCULAIRE UNE TECHNIQUE DE LOCALISATION D'OBJET VOLUMIQUE, RESTREINTE A LA VISION MONOCULAIRE, PRECEDEMMENT DEVELOPPEE AU LABORATOIRE. PUIS, NOUS NOUS SOMMES ATTACHES A L'EVALUATION THEORIQUE DE LA PRECISION DE L'ATTITUDE AINSI OBTENUE. LE SUIVI DES OBJETS EN MOUVEMENT. CE DERNIER POINT EST DANS SON PRINCIPE SOLUTIONNE DE MANIERE CLASSIQUE EN AYANT RECOURS A UN FILTRAGE DE KALMAN. MAIS LA PRINCIPALE DIFFICULTE RESIDE DANS LA MISE EN CORRESPONDANCE AUTOMATIQUE ENTRE LES PRIMITIVES-IMAGE ET LES ELEMENTS DU MODELE DE L'OBJET OBSERVE. NOUS AVONS PROPOSE DE RECOURIR A DES PROCESSUS ORIGINAUX FONDES SUR DES TECHNIQUES DE CORRELATION UVRANT DIRECTEMENT DANS LES IMAGES DE LUMINANCE

Book excerpt: LA RECHERCHE D'UNE METHODE DE LOCALISATION DEDIEE AUX OBJETS POLYEDRIQUES ARTICULES A PARTIR D'UNE IMAGE DE LUMINANCE, FORME LA PARTIE FONDAMENTALE DU TRAVAIL ENVISAGE DANS LE CADRE DE CETTE THESE. L'AUTRE PARTIE CONSISTE A METTRE EN APPLICATION CETTE METHODE AFIN DE SUIVRE L'EVOLUTION D'UN OBJET ARTICULE A TRAVERS UNE SEQUENCE D'IMAGES MONOCULAIRES. LA LOCALISATION D'UN OBJET ARTICULE REVIENT A DETERMINER DES INFORMATIONS 3D A PARTIR DES DONNEES 2D. UN MANQUE D'INFORMATIONS, DU A LA PROJECTION DE L'OBJET OBSERVE, SUBSISTE. NOUS REMEDIONS A CE MANQUE PAR UNE CONNAISSANCE A PRIORI D'UN MODELE GEOMETRIQUE DE L'OBJET A LOCALISER. L'ESTIMATION DE L'ATTITUDE SPATIALE D'UN OBJET ARTICULE A M DEGRES DE LIBERTE INTERNES SE TRADUIT PAR L'EVALUATION DE M PARAMETRES RELATIFS A CES DEGRES DE LIBERTE ET DE SIX AUTRES PARAMETRES RELATIFS AU POSITIONNEMENT D'UNE PARTIE RIGIDE DE L'OBJET ARTICULE. NOUS AVONS FORMALISE LE PROBLEME DE LA LOCALISATION, POUR EN DERIVER DES EQUATIONS NON-LINEAIRES EN FONCTION DES PARAMETRES DE POSITION, RELIANT DES PRIMITIVES 2D DE L'IMAGE ETUDIEE AUX ELEMENTS 3D CORRESPONDANT DU MODELE. CES EQUATIONS REPRESENTENT LES DISTANCES EUCLIDIENNES ENTRE DES POINTS 3D DU MODELE ET LES PLANS D'INTERPRETATIONS LIES AUX SEGMENTS DANS L'IMAGE. POUR OBTENIR L'ATTITUDE DU MODELE CONFORMEMENT A CELLE DE L'OBJET DANS L'IMAGE, NOUS EFFECTUONS UN CALCUL DE MINIMISATION D'UN CRITERE DE DISTANCE. CE DERNIER ETANT FONCTION DES EQUATIONS NON-LINEAIRES ETABLIES, EST OPTIMISE A L'AIDE DE LA METHODE ITERATIVE DE LEVENBERG-MARQUARDT. LA VALIDITE DE CETTE APPROCHE A ETE DEMONTREE A TRAVERS L'ANALYSE D'IMAGES REELLES D'UN ROBOT MANIPULATEUR EN MILIEU INDUSTRIEL. DE PLUS, PAR UN CALCUL THEORIQUE, NOUS AVONS DEDUIT L'ERREUR RELATIVE A LA POSITION ESTIMEE DE L'OBJET ARTICULE. POUR SUIVRE L'EVOLUTION D'UN OBJET ARTICULE, NOUS AVONS ELABORE UN ALGORITHME PERMETTANT L'ENCHAINEMENT DE LA LOCALISATION ENTRE DEUX IMAGES SUCCESSIVES D'UNE SEQUENCE DONNEE. CET ALGORITHME PROCURE D'UNE MANIERE AUTOMATIQUE LES APPARIEMENTS UTILES A LA METHODE DE LOCALISATION ENTRE LES PRIMITIVES 2D ET LES ELEMENTS CORRESPONDANT DU MODELE. A CET ALGORITHME, NOUS AVONS AJOUTE UNE PROCEDURE DE PREDICTION QUI REND CE DERNIER PLUS EFFICACE FACE A UN FORT DEPLACEMENT DE L'OBJET ENTRE DEUX IMAGES. DE MEME, CETTE TECHNIQUE DE SUIVI A ETE VALIDEE SUR UNE SEQUENCE D'IMAGES PRISE DU ROBOT MANIPULATEUR LORS D'UNE MANIPULATION

Book excerpt: LE CONTEXTE DE CETTE THESE EST LA COMMANDE D'UN ROBOT MANIPULATEUR MOYENNANT UN CAPTEUR DE VISION. UN SYSTEME DE VISION MONOCULAIRE EST UTILISE POUR CONTROLER LA POSITION ET L'ORIENTATION DU MANIPULATEUR PAR RAPPORT A UN ENSEMBLE D'OBJETS DE FORME GEOMETRIQUE SIMPLE (PIECES INDUSTRIELLES). LE SYSTEME DE VISION FAIT PARTIE DE LA FAMILLE DES SYSTEMES A MODELE DE BASE. DANS UN TEL SYSTEME LA RECONNAISSANCE ET LA LOCALISATION IMPLIQUENT LA CORRESPONDANCE ENTRE L'IMAGE ET UN ENSEMBLE DE MODELES PREDEFINIES DE L'ENVIRONNEMENT. L'EXTRACTION RAPIDE ET PRECISE DES PRIMITIVES SIMPLES COMPOSANTS LES CONTOURS DES OBJETS EST UNE EXIGENCE FONDAMENTALE POUR UN TEL PROCESSUS. LE PREMIER AXE DE CE TRAVAIL CONCERNE ALORS LA SEGMENTATION DES CONTOURS. LES ALGORITHMES DEVELOPPES PERMETTENT DE PALIER AUX PROBLEMES DE BRUIT ET DE DECOMPOSITION DES CONTOURS LISSES ET CE PAR L'INTERMEDIAIRE D'UN FILTRAGE OPTIMAL ET D'UNE TRANSFORMEE D'ONDELETTE. LA METHODOLOGIE ET LES OUTILS CONCERNANT L'EXTRACTION, LA CLASSIFICATION ET L'ESTIMATION DES PARAMETRES DES PRIMITIVES SONT ENSUITE EXPLICITEE. LE DEUXIEME AXE TRAITE LA RECONNAISSANCE ET LA LOCALISATION TRIDIMENTIONNELLE DES OBJETS. FOCALISER LA RECHERCHE SUR LES PRIMITIVES SAILLANTES DES OBJETS REDUIT ENORMEMENT L'ESPACE DES CORRESPONDANCES. L'APPROCHE PROPOSEE POUR LA LOCALISATION DES OBJETS EST UNE COMBINAISON DES METHODES ANALYTIQUES ET DES METHODES NUMERIQUES. ELLE TIENT COMPTE EGALEMENT DE L'ASPECT STOCHASTIQUE DE LA LOCALISATION

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatial disorientation is of key relevance to our globalized world, eliciting complex questions about our relationship with technology and the last remaining vestiges of our animal nature. Viewed more broadly, disorientation is a profoundly geographical theme that concerns our relationship with space, places, the body, emotions, and time, as well as being a powerful and frequently recurring metaphor in art, philosophy, and literature. Using multiple perspectives, lenses, methodological tools, and scales, Geographies of Disorientation addresses questions such as: How do we orient ourselves? What are the cognitive and cultural instruments that we use to move through space? Why do we get lost? Two main threads run through the book: getting lost as a practice, explored within a post-phenomenological framework in relation to direct and indirect observation, wayfinding performances, and the various methods and tools used to find our position in space; and disorientation as a metaphor for the contemporary era, used in a broad range of contexts to express the difficulty of finding points of reference in the world we live in. Drawing on a wide range of literature, Geographies of Disorientation is a highly original and intruiging read which will be of interest to scholars of human geography, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, cognitive science, information technology, and the communication sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume brings together specialists from different backgrounds to deliver expert views on the relationship between morality and emotion, putting a special emphasis on issues related to emotional shocks. One of the distinctive aspects of social existence today is our subjection to traumatic events on a global scale, and our subsequent embodiment of the emotional responses these events provoke. Covering various methodological angles, the contributors ensure careful and heterogeneous reflection on this delicate topic. With eleven original essays, the collection spans a wide variety of fields from philosophy and literary theory, to the visual arts, history, and psychology. The authors cover diverse themes, including philosophical approaches to political polarization; the impact of negative emotions such as anger on inter-relational balance; humour and politics; media and the idea of progress; photography and trauma discourse; democratic morality in modern Indian society; emotional olfactory experiences; phenomenological readings of spatial disorientation, and the significance of moral shocks. This timely volume offers crucial perspectives on contemporary questions relating to ethical behaviours, and the challenges of a globalized society on the verge of political, financial and emotional collapse.

Book excerpt: This anthology aims to present the fundamental philosophical issues and tools required by the reflection within and upon geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) . It is an introduction to the philosophy for GIScience from an analytical perspective, which looks at GIS with a specific focus on its fundamental and most general concepts and distinctions. The first part of the book is devoted to explore some of the main philosophical questions arising from GIS and GIScience, which include, among others, investigations in ontology, epistemology, linguistics and geometrical modeling. The second part concerns issues related to spatial and cartographical representations of the geographical world. The third part is focused on the ontology of geography, specifically in terms of geographical entities, objects and boundaries. Finally, in the fourth part, the topic of GIS constitutes a starting point for exploring themes such as quantum geography and disorientation, and for defining professional profiles for geographers with competences in GIS environment. This book on a new and unexplored field of research could be a fundamental point of reference for professional philosophers and geographers interested in the theoretical reflection about the foundational concepts of GIScience. It is also interesting reading material for students (both undergraduates, postgraduates and Ph.D. students) in philosophy, geography, applied ontology, GIScience, geomatics and computer science.

Book excerpt: Techniques of performing applied mineralogy investigations, and applications and capabilities of recently developed instruments for measuring mineral properties are explored in this book intended for practicing applied mineralogists, students in mineralogy and metallurgy, and mineral processing engineers. The benefits of applied mineralogy are presented by using in-depth applied mineralogy studies on base metal ores, gold ores, porphyry copper ores, iron ores and industrial minerals as examples. The chapter on base metal ores includes a discussion on the effects of liberation, particle sizes and surfaces coatings of Pb, Cu, Fe, Ca and So4- on the recoveries of sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite. The chapter on gold discusses various methods of determining the quantities of gold in different minerals, including 'invisible' gold in pyrite and arsenopyrite, so that a balance of the distribution of gold among the minerals can be calculated. This book also discusses the roles of pyrite, oxygen, moisture and bacterial (thiobacillus ferrooxidans) on reactions that produce acidic drainage from tailings piles, and summarizes currently used and proposed methods of remediation of acidic drainage.

Schaeffer expands his earlier research in musique concrète to suggest a methodology of working with sounds based on his experiences in radio broadcasting and the recording studio. Drawing on acoustics, physics, and physiology, but also on philosophy and the relationship between subject and object, Schaeffer’s essay summarizes his theoretical and practical work in music composition. Translators Christine North and John Dack present an important book in the history of ideas in Europe that will resonate far beyond electroacoustic music.

Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the ways in which the production and consumption of food developed in the Aegean region in the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, to see how this was linked to the appearance of more complex forms of social organisation. Sites from Macedonia in the north of Greece down to Crete are discussed and chronologically the papers cover not only the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age but extend into the Middle and Late Bronze Age and Classical period as well. The evidence from human remains, animal and fish bones, cultivated and wild plants, hearths and ovens, ceramics and literary texts is interpreted through a range of techniques, such as residue and stable isotope analysis. A number of key themes emerge, for example the changes in the types of food that were produced around the time of the Final Neolithic-Early Bronze Age transition, which is seen as a particularly critical period, the ways in which foodstuffs were stored and cooked, the significance of culinary innovations and the social role of consumption.
