Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Thorpe Porter's book is a fascinating, horrifying, and at times hilarious document of life in Ireland during the late 18th and early 19th century. Porter's book is full of personal anecdotes about the cases he was involved in, and the people he knew around Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, and further afield. There's stories of people escaping from Death Row in Kilmainham gaol, professional beggars, lost diamonds, suave swindlers, drunken sailors, rebels, reunited lovers, she barracks, and much more. Thorpe is a convivial storyteller and relishes the opportunity of presenting these stories and tries to be as accurate as he can. Anyone who enjoys incredible real stories, Irish History, or criminal cases will find something to appreciate here.About BrambleHill Press: BrambleHill Press Limited has been set up to publish forgotten or neglected texts that we come across and feel are interesting, relevant, and should be much wider known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of an Irish Police Magistrate and Other Reminiscenses of the South of Ireland A'r a moment when the horrors of agrarian outrage, 'and those of base assassination, threaten again to fill the South of Ireland with just terror - when not only has it been found necessary to send down a special commission to inspire terror and promptly bring the bloodthirsty offenders to justice; but, above all, when more than one grand jury have recorded their doubts respecting the efficiency of the present police system, it certainly cannot be an ill chosen opportunity to place before the public some accounts of those mis deeds which at a former period disgraced and paralysed the greater part of the province of Munster, and-which were then put down by the effective and strong exertions of the local magistrates, many of whom still live, and still possess the powers of their youth, powers which they would doubtless display, if properly called on to exhibit them. The gentlemen who now honourably hold the commission of the peace in Limerick, Clare, and Tip petary, are men of undoubted courage, energy, and intelligence. An appeal to them would at once arouse them and though (perhaps from personal attachment) I believe I never saw so clever, so wonderful an officer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Policing of Belfast, 1870-1914 examines the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) in late Victorian Belfast in order to see how a semi-military, largely rural constabulary adapted to the problems that a city posed. Mark Radford explores whether the RIC, as the most public face of British government, was successful in controlling a recalcitrant Irish urban populace. This examination of the contrast in styles between urban and rural policing and semi-rural and civil constabulary offers an important insight into the social, political and military history of Ireland at the turn of the twentieth century. The book concludes by showing how governmental neglect of the force and its failure to comprehensively address the issues of pay and conditions of service ultimately led to crisis in the RIC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of the Irish writers of the Victorian age, some of them still remembered, most of them now forgotten. Their work was often directed to a British as well as an Irish reading audience and was therefore disparaged in the era of W.B. Yeats and the Irish Literary Revival with its culturally nationalist agenda. This study is based on a reading of around 370 novels by 150 authors, including still-familiar novelists such as William Carleton, the peasant writer who wielded much influence, and Charles Lever, whose serious work was destroyed by the slur of 'rollicking', as well as Joseph Sheridan LeFanu, George Moore, Emily Lawless, Somerville and Ross, Bram Stoker, and three of the leading authors from the new-woman movement, Sarah Grand, Iota, and George Egerton. James H. Murphy examines the work of these and many other writers in a variety of contexts: the political, economic, and cultural developments of the time; the vicissitudes of the reading audience; the realities of a publishing industry that was for the most part London-based; the often difficult circumstances of the lives of the novelists; and the ever changing genre of the novel itself, to which Irish authors often made a contribution. Politics, history, religion, gender and, particularly, land, over which nineteenth-century Ireland was deeply divided, featured as key themes for fiction. Finally, the book engages with the critical debate of recent times concerning the supposed failure of realism in the nineteenth-century Irish novel, looking for more specific causes than have hitherto been offered and discovering occasions on which realism turned out to be possible.

This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recollections of an Irish Police Magistrate reads like fiction. The people are larger than life, the events too unbelievable, but they're all true. Henry Robert Addison was there, he saw the dried blood and gore at the site of the Carrickshock massacre, the torch lit rebels roaming the countryside, he heard Daniel O'Connell's sonorous voice captivate crowds of thousands, he stood under the gallows as criminals were launched into eternity, he met both the famous and infamous of his day, and he recounts it all here. The Irish Police Magistrate of the title is Thomas Phillips Vokes; who was Addison's father-in-law, after he married his daughter Mary Vokes in 1828. Vokes was the Chief Police Magistrate of Limerick city and county from 1822 to his retirement in 1845. Voke's reads like a 80's action film hero. Singlehandedly taking on rebels with his formidable strength and cunning intelligence. Voke's fearlessly tracks down rebels, and murderers through bogs and mountains with nothing to protect himself with but a horsewhip. Vokes' life is constantly under threat because of how successful he is, he's said to have a charmed life and one would-be-assassin goes as far as casting silver bullets in the belief they will put an end to Vokes. Addison gets dragged along on these dangerous excursions and writes about them in an authentically engaging and descriptive manner. About the Author:Henry Robert Addison (1805-1876), sometimes erroneously called Captain Addison, was born in Calcutta. He became a cornet in the 2nd Dragoon Guards on 12 July 1827, and was promoted to lieutenant on 15 March 1831, which rank he held until 21 June 1833, when he was placed on half pay. He began writing for the stage in 1830 and was the author of about sixty dramas and farces. He was lessee of Queen's Theatre, London from August 1836 to 1837. He wrote many songs and articles in monthly magazines. He was author of about twelve novels and stories. He edited Who's Who from 1849 to 1850. He was special correspondent of a morning paper at the Paris exhibition in 1867. He was deputy chairman of London steamboat company. He died at Albion St., Hyde Park, London, on 24 June 1876, aged 71.
