Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Writer's Recollections I can remember too being lifted - weak and miserable with toothache - in my father's arms to catch the first sight of English Shores as we neared the mouth of the Thames; and then the dismal in by the docks where we first took Shelter. The dreary room where we children slept the first night, its dingy ugliness and its barred windows, still come back to me as a vision of horror. Next day, like angels of rescue, came an aunt and uncle, who took us away to other and cheerful quarters, and presently saw us off to Westmorland. The aunt was my godmother, Dr. Arnold's eldest daughter - then the young wife of William Edward Forster, a Quaker manufacturer, who afterwards became the well-known Education Minister of 1870, and was Chief Secretary for Ireland in the terrible years 1880-82. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Doctor's Table Talk IN consigning this little book to a kind and ingenuous public, I make one emphatic protest: the fictitious persons here described do not repre sent actual individuals. Dr. Primrose, Dr. Ely, Dr. James, Dr. F laxman, Dr. Consequence, Scho lasticus, Scriba, and the rest have no true proto types. They are composite studies. There is one exception: Dr. Optimus (chapter V!) is that remark able man, Dr. Edward Fitch Cushing, of Cleve land, and my very dear friend, now dead. Actual public and historical characters are not disguised, but are truly named in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctor, &C Five out of six, it has been said by those quite able to form an unbiassed and judicious opinion, were assured as to the authorship of the doctor, It is now well known that the lamented Southey played with its pages as he did with his kittens, as a relaxation from his bread-earning and every day pursuits. It is not too much to say that no one but Southey could have written it. Line upon line, - page upon page, shows the man that feared God, and honoured the King, and loved his Country, and despised all political tinkers, whether in matters ecclesiastical or civil. The extract following from a letter to Bliss Caroline Bowles, the present no less talented than amiable and excellent Mrs. Southey, and my much valued friend, - contains the most interesting particulars relative to the work. It is dated, Keswick, June, 1835. Miss B., who then lived in the next house, was the Ehow Begum. That whole chapter (that is, Chapter VII. A. I.) is from the life, and the Book grew out of that night's conversation, exactly as there related. But to go farther back with its history. There is a story of Dr. D. D. Of D., and of his horse Nobs, which has, I believe, been made into a Hawker's Book. Coleridge used to tell it, and the humour lay in making it as long winded as possible - it suited, however, my long-windedness better than his, and I was frequently called upon for it by those who enjoyed it, and sometimes I volunteered it, when Coleridge protested against its being told. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lighter Side of Irish Life Thus a mythical Irishman has come into be ing, a sentimentalist at heart, a creature of ir responsible gaiety, of singular and irresistible charm of manner, of spontaneous brilliance, a light lover of every pretty woman, or in cases where he happens himself to be a woman, a careless winner of the hearts of men. It is small wonder that the Irish are popular with writers of fiction. We supply for the novelist a long felt want, and are fitted to play In his stories just those parts which throw into the strongest relief the stable worthiness of the ideal, and, I fear, equally mythical, Englishman. The reader of contemporary fiction can hardly fail to be struck with the fact that a dash Of Irish blood in her veins is now considered necessary as an explanation of the charm of a heroine, that true gallantry in a hero can only be rendered credible by providing him with at least a great grandmother who belonged to an old Irish fam ily. This myth about the Irish character is of comparatively recent growth. The older novel ists knew nothing of it. They either despised us too much to put us into their books at all, or. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of My Life IN these memoirs I have endeavoured to describe as succinctly and briefly as possible the course of a somewhat varied and eventful life. I am greatly indebted to my friend Dr Andrew Davidson for the assistance he has rendered me in compressing the work within the compass of a single volume, and can only hope that it may fulfil in some measure the wishes of friends who have often urged me to undertake it. Much has of necessity been omitted, but if that which remains prove acceptable to those who are interested in India and in the career of the writer, the labour entailed will be fully recompensed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits of Wittgenstein is a major collection of memoirs and reflections on one of the most influential and yet elusive personalities in the history of modern philosophy, Ludwig Wittgenstein. Featuring a wealth of illuminating and profound insights into Wittgenstein's extraordinary life, this unique collection reveals Wittgenstein's character and power of personality more vividly and comprehensively than ever before. With portraits from more than 50 figures, Portraits of Wittgenstein brings together the personal recollections of philosophers, students, friends and acquaintances, including Bertrand Russell, G. E. Moore, F. R. Leavis, A. J. Ayer, Karl Popper, Friedrich von Hayek, G. H. von Wright, Freeman Dyson, Iris Murdoch, Mary Midgley and Mary Warnock. These authors testify to the life-long influence Wittgenstein had on the lives of those he met. Their fascinating memoirs, reflections and commentaries, often at odds with each other, reveal Wittgenstein's kindness, and how much genuine friendship meant to him, as well as his suffering and despair. They show too how the philosopher's ruthless honesty and uncompromising integrity often resulted in stern advice and harsh rebukes to friends and foes alike. Now abridged and available in paperback, this collection of valuable and hard-to-find material is an indispensable resource for scholars and students of the life and work of Ludwig Wittgenstein.
