Book Synopsis Reclaimed Fly Ash as Select Fill Under PCC Pavement by : Kenneth L. Bergeson
Download or read book Reclaimed Fly Ash as Select Fill Under PCC Pavement written by Kenneth L. Bergeson and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the support of the Iowa Fly Ash Affiliates, research on reclaimed fly ash for use as a construction material has been ongoing since 1991. The material exhibits engineering properties similar to those of soft limestone or sandstone and a lightweight aggregate. It is unique in that it is rich in calcium, silica, and aluminum and exhibits pozzolanic properties (i.e. gains strength over time) when used untreated or when a calcium activator is added. Reclaimed Class C fly ashes have been successfully used as a base material on a variety of construction projects in southern and western Iowa. A pavement design guide has been developed with the support of the Iowa Fly Ash Affiliates. Soils in Iowa generally rate fair to poor as subgrade soils for paving projects. This is especially true in the southern quarter of the state and for many areas of eastern and western Iowa. Many of the soil types encountered for highway projects are unsuitable soils under the current Iowa DOT specifications. The bulk of the remaining soils are Class 10 soils. Select soils for use directly under the pavement are often difficult to find on a project, and in many instances are economically unavailable. This was the case for a 4.43-mile grading (STP-S- 90(22)-SE-90) and paving project in Wapello County. The project begins at the Alliant Utilities generating station in Chillicothe, Iowa, and runs west to the Monroe-Wapello county line. This road carries a significant amount of truck traffic hauling coal from the generating station to the Cargill corn processing plant in Eddyville, Iowa. The proposed 10-inch Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement was for construction directly on a Class 10 soil subgrade, which is not a desirable condition if other alternatives are available. Wapello County Engineer Wendell Folkerts supported the use of reclaimed fly ash for a portion of the project. Construction of about three miles of the project was accomplished using 10 inches of reclaimed fly ash as a select fill beneath the PCC slab. The remaining mile was constructed according to the original design to be used as a control section for performance monitoring. The project was graded during the summers of 1998 and 1999. Paving was completed in the fall of 1999. This report presents the results of design considerations and laboratory and field testing results during construction. Recommendations for use of reclaimed fly ash as a select fill are also presented.

Download or read book Recycled Materials and by Products in Highway Applications written by Mary Stroup-Gardiner and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2013 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recycled materials and industrial byproducts are being used in transportation applications with increasing frequency. There is a growing body of experience showing that these materials work well in highway applications. This study gathers the experiences of transportation agencies in determining the relevant properties of recycled materials and industrial byproducts and the beneficial use for highway applications. Information for this study was acquired through a literature review, and surveys and interviews with state department of transportation staff. The report will serve as a guide to states revising the provisions of their materials specifications to incorporate the use of recycled materials and industrial byproducts, and should, thereby, assist producers and users in leveling the playing field for a wide range of dissimilar materials.
Book Synopsis A Predictive Approach for Long-term Performance of Recycled Materials Using Accelerated Aging by :
Download or read book A Predictive Approach for Long-term Performance of Recycled Materials Using Accelerated Aging written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of recycled materials in a proposed highway application frequently requires the assessment of physical and environmental performance. Future behavior is often difficult to predict. As an alternative to field demonstrations, there is a need to develop strategies to predict long-term physical and environmental performance. Accelerated aging is one means of exploring the long-term physical and environmental performance of recycled materials in a highway. Coal fly ash (CFA) use in portland cement concrete (PCC) was selected as a model system to develop an accelerated aging approach. Three types of accelerated aging were chosen for this project: Arrhenius aging (AA), cyclic loading (CL), and freeze-thaw exposure (FT). This approach, incorporated in an experimental design, allowed a systematic exploration of the separate effects and combined interactions of both developmental and degradative accelerated aging variables. A slab from U.S. Route 20 in northwest Iowa was used as both the basis for the concrete mixes and as a field verification site.

Book Synopsis Comparison and Definition of State DOT's Practices in Selection of Materials for Pavements by : Arudi Rajagopal
Download or read book Comparison and Definition of State DOT's Practices in Selection of Materials for Pavements written by Arudi Rajagopal and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the details of a study conducted by Infrastructure Management and Engineering (INFRAME) to review Ohio Department of Transportation's (ODOT's) current pavement material selection practices and suggest improvements where necessary. The present study was initiated by ODOT's Office of Materials Management as part of its continuing effort to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of the materials used to construct pavements in Ohio. This report synthesizes the state-of-thepractice review of pavement materials selection procedures and criteria in Ohio and other State Department of Transportation. The study was conducted in three parts: (i) a review of the literature, (ii) a survey of state DOT.s, and (iii) a critical review of ODOT practices, including recommendations for improvement. The results of the literature review and the survey of the states (presented as an interactive computer database) will primarily be of interest to the ODOT technical staff who are involved in the day-to-day details of the materials selection process. The critical review of ODOT's practices will be of interest to ODOT managers responsible for charting the future course of the program. No significant changes in ODOT's material selection procedures are needed. Indeed, a review of ODOT's procedures, in comparison to the practices presented in the published literature and described in a survey of states agencies (conducted as a part of this study), conveys an extremely positive impression, which reflects favorably upon the department as a whole. The Office of Materials Management provides necessary support services and at the same time constantly strives to identify areas in need of improvement. The principal recommendations of the study are that two asphalt materials (foamed asphalt and warm mix asphalt), several recycled materials, and an improved aggregate test procedure (the Micro Deval procedure) be further evaluated to determine their potential for providing better performing and/or more economical Ohio pavements.
