Book excerpt: This book examines the Recent Trends and Patterns of Agricultural Credit in India during the Post-reforms period, one of the defining aspects of the current phase of globalization and economic reforms is the increased threat to the livelihoods of small farmers in developing countries. There are instances of this across the developing world, from 1998 until the present; thousands of small farmers have committed suicide in India. For the proper functioning of an agriculture system farmers need to use many inputs. One among them is credit. It is considered as an important part in the development of agriculture. The study is exclusively based on secondary data. The data have been collected from various issues of Report on Currency and Finance (RBI), Banking Statistics (RBI), Report on Trends and Progress in Banking in India (RBI), RBI Bulletin (RBI), NABARD, various rounds of NSSO, Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), Statistical Outline of India (Tata Services Ltd.) and Economic Survey (Government of India). The main objective of this book is to provide students and instructor with clear, up-to- date and sample and straight forward approach to learn about agricultural credit. Book excerpt: The United Nations declared 2012 the year of cooperatives, emphasizing that there is an alternative to privately owned firms. While greed and mismanagement have caused world financial and economic crises, co-ops offer another type of business for economic activities that is less exposed to aggressive capitalism. This book provides a problem-oriented overview of the development of cooperatives over the last fifty years. The global study addresses the major challenges cooperatives face, such as the organizational innovations introduced to acquire necessary risk-capital and implement growth-related strategies, the wave of demutualization in developed nations and their ability to construct an original consumer politics. The contributors to this volume discuss the successes and failures of the cooperatives and ask whether they are an outdated model of enterprise. They document a wave of foundations of new co-ops, new forms of collaboration between them and a growing trend toward globalization.

This book also examines the successes and challenges for emerging and existing cooperatives in Africa, while delivering both practical lessons and insights into the theory. It presents completely new materials on the cooperative movement, against a backdrop of increasing global recognition of the roles of cooperatives and collective action in socio-economic development. Readers are invited to consider how, as an economic model that seeks to advance member collective interests, cooperatives are invaluable tools for human, economic and social development. Social and human geographers find this a remarkably impactful contribution to the literature surrounding cooperatives in Africa and cooperative theory in general. Policy experts and students also find the research informative and insightful.
