Download or read book Freshwater Algae of North America written by John D. Wehr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 1067 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater Algae of North America: Ecology and Classification, Second Edition is an authoritative and practical treatise on the classification, biodiversity, and ecology of all known genera of freshwater algae from North America. The book provides essential taxonomic and ecological information about one of the most diverse and ubiquitous groups of organisms on earth. This single volume brings together experts on all the groups of algae that occur in fresh waters (also soils, snow, and extreme inland environments). In the decade since the first edition, there has been an explosion of new information on the classification, ecology, and biogeography of many groups of algae, with the use of molecular techniques and renewed interest in biological diversity. Accordingly, this new edition covers updated classification information of most algal groups and the reassignment of many genera and species, as well as new research on harmful algal blooms. Extensive and complete Describes every genus of freshwater algae known from North America, with an analytical dichotomous key, descriptions of diagnostic features, and at least one image of every genus. Full-color images throughout provide superb visual examples of freshwater algae Updated Environmental Issues and Classifications, including new information on harmful algal blooms (HAB) Fully revised introductory chapters, including new topics on biodiversity, and taste and odor problems Updated to reflect the rapid advances in algal classification and taxonomy due to the widespread use of DNA technologies
Book Synopsis Ecology of Cyanobacteria II by : Brian A. Whitton
Download or read book Ecology of Cyanobacteria II written by Brian A. Whitton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyanobacteria have existed for 3.5 billion years, yet they are still the most important photosynthetic organisms on the planet for cycling carbon and nitrogen. The ecosystems where they have key roles range from the warmer oceans to many Antarctic sites. They also include dense nuisance growths in nutrient-rich lakes and nitrogen-fixers which aid the fertility of rice-fields and many soils, especially the biological soil crusts of arid regions. Molecular biology has in recent years provided major advances in our understanding of cyanobacterial ecology. Perhaps for more than any other group of organisms, it is possible to see how the ecology, physiology, biochemistry, ultrastructure and molecular biology interact. This all helps to deal with practical problems such as the control of nuisance blooms and the use of cyanobacterial inocula to manage semi-desert soils. Large-scale culture of several organisms, especially "Spirulina" (Arthrospira), for health food and specialist products is increasingly being expanded for a much wider range of uses. In view of their probable contribution to past oil deposits, much attention is currently focused on their potential as a source of biofuel. This book complements the highly successful Ecology of Cyanobacteria and integrates the discoveries of the past twelve years with the older literature.

Book Synopsis Freshwater Algae by : Edward G. Bellinger
Download or read book Freshwater Algae written by Edward G. Bellinger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second edition of Freshwater Algae; thepopular guide to temperate freshwater algae. This book uniquelycombines practical information on sampling and experimentaltechniques with an explanation of basic algal taxonomy plus a keyto identify the more frequently-occurring organisms. Fullyrevised, it describes major bioindicator species in relationto key environmental parameters and their implications for aquaticmanagement. This second edition includes: the same clear writing style as the first edition to provide aneasily accessible source of information on algae within standingand flowing waters, and the problems they may cause the identification of 250 algae using a key based on readilyobservable morphological features that can be readily observedunder a conventional light microscope up-to-date information on the molecular determination of taxonomicstatus, analytical microtechniques and the potential role ofcomputer analysis in algal biology upgrades to numerous line drawings to include more detail and extraspecies information, full colour photographs of live algae –including many new images from the USA and China Bridging the gap between simple identification texts and highlyspecialised research volumes, this book is used both as a comprehensive introduction to the subject and as alaboratory manual. The new edition will be invaluable to aquaticbiologists for algal identification, and for all practitioners andresearchers working within aquatic microbiology in industry andacademia.

Book Synopsis Taxonomy and Ecology of Marine Algae by : Bum Soo Park
Download or read book Taxonomy and Ecology of Marine Algae written by Bum Soo Park and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2022-02-18 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "algae" refers to a large diversity of unrelated phylogenetic entities, ranging from picoplanktonic cells to macroalgal kelps. Marine algae are an important primary producer in the marine food chain, responsible for the high primary production of coastal areas, providing food resources in situ for many grazing species of gastropods, peracarid crustaceans, sea urchins or fish. Recent findings indicate that marine environments have rapidly changed due to global warming over the past several decades. This change has led to significant variations in marine algal ecology. For example, a long-term increase in ocean temperatures due to global warming has facilitated the intensification of harmful algal blooms, which adversely impact public health, aquatic organisms, and aquaculture industries. Thus, extensive studies have been conducted, but there is still a gap in our understanding of the variation in their ecology in accordance with future marine environmental changes. To fill this gap, studies on the taxonomy and ecology of marine algae are highly necessary. We have invited algologists to submit research articles that enable us to advance our understanding of the taxonomy and ecology of marine algae. Fourteen papers have been collected so far, which cover different aspects of the taxonomy and ecology of marine algae, including understudied species, interspecific comparisons, and new techniques.
