Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic Nanomaterials in Analytical Chemistry provides the first comprehensive review of magnetic nanomaterials in a variety of analytical chemistry applications, including basic information necessary for students and those new to the topic to utilize them. In addition to analytical chemists, those in various other disciplines where these materials have great potential-e.g., organic chemistry, catalysis, sensors-will also find this a valuable resource. Magnetic nanomaterials that can be controlled using external magnetic fields have opened new doors for the development of new sample preparation methods and novel magnetic sorbents for forensic chemistry, environmental monitoring, magnetic digital microfluidics, bioanalysis, and food analysis. In addition, they are seeing wide application as sensing materials in the development of giant magnetoresistive sensors, biosensors, electrochemical sensors, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy sensors, resonance light scattering sensors, and colorimetric sensors. Includes fundamental information on magnetic nanomaterials, including their classification, synthesis, functionalization, and characterization methods, separation and isolation techniques, toxicity, fate, and safe disposal Each chapter describes a specific application Utilizes figures, schemes, and images for better understanding of the principles of the method Presents information on advanced methods, such as giant magnetoresistive and magnetic digital microfluidics

Book excerpt: The book explains the principles and fundamentals of Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC) and highlights the current developments and future potential of the analytical green chemistry-oriented applications of various solutions. The book consists of sixteen chapters, including the history and milestones of GAC; issues related to teaching of green analytical chemistry and greening the university laboratories; evaluation of impact of analytical activities on the environmental and human health, direct techniques of detection, identification and determination of trace constituents; new achievements in the field of extraction of trace analytes from samples characterized by complex composition of the matrix; “green” nature of the derivatization process in analytical chemistry; passive techniques of sampling of analytes; green sorption materials used in analytical procedures; new types of solvents in the field of analytical chemistry. In addition green chromatography and related techniques, fast tests for assessment of the wide spectrum of pollutants in the different types of the medium, remote monitoring of environmental pollutants, qualitative and comparative evaluation, quantitative assessment, and future trends and perspectives are discussed. This book appeals to a wide readership of the academic and industrial researchers. In addition, it can be used in the classroom for undergraduate and graduate Ph.D. students focusing on elaboration of new analytical procedures for organic and inorganic compounds determination in different kinds of samples characterized by complex matrices composition.Jacek Namieśnik was a Professor at the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Gdańsk University of Technology, Poland. Justyna Płotka-Wasylka is a teacher and researcher at the same department.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selenium (Se) is an essential dietary trace element participating in the regulation of various physiological functions in both animals and humans through its incorporation into selenoproteins as the amino acid selenocysteine. Among many minerals Se has a special place being the most controversial trace element with a narrow gap between essentiality and toxicity. Indeed there are important environmental issues considering selenium as a pollutant from the one hand and global selenium deficiency on the other. In fact, Se deficiency is considered as a risk factor for the development of various diseases in human and animals. Decreased Se availability from soils as a result of low soil pH and usage of synthetic fertilizers is the major concern in European countries causing inadequate Se levels in food and feeds. Furthermore, it seems likely that sodium selenite used for the last 30 years as a feed supplement is not an optimal form of Se and the usage of organic selenium in animal diets could help to maintain optimal Se status as well as high immunocompetence, productive and reproductive performance. The aim of the present volume is to provide updated information on several important Se-related subjects, including Se status in Europe and ways of its improvement, advances in Se analysis and speciation in biological material, roles of selenium in poultry, pig and ruminant nutrition. Production of functional Se-enriched food, the relationship between selenium and mycotoxins, polyunsaturated fatty acids as well as reoviruses are also addressed. This collection of articles will provide nutritionists, veterinarians, human doctors, researchers and any other readers with new insights into the exciting world of the goddess of the moon - SELENIUM.

This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As more Americans are attending college, historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are now in a position where they must directly compete with other institutions. While other colleges and universities might have more resources and stronger infrastructures, HBCUs provide better opportunities to meet the needs of students of color. Setting a New Agenda for Student Engagement and Retention in Historically Black Colleges and Universities explores the innovations that HBCUs can enact to better serve and prepare the next generation of African American leaders, and to be more competitive in the higher education landscape. As students need different forms of support throughout their academic career, it becomes necessary to engage them through mentorship, programming, and classroom management. This book is a valuable resource for educators and administration at HBCUs, sociologists, policy makers, and students studying education science and administration.
