Book excerpt: This volume contains the main contributions to the 14th International Conference on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories (RPMBT14) held at the Technical University of Catalonia, Spain, in July 2007. This conference, which was first held in Trieste in 1979, is devoted to new developments in the field of many-body theories, which are being applied and developed in a rapidly growing number of fields. The emphasis is twofold: progress in the technical aspects of microscopic theories and a review of recent applications of many-body techniques. In addition to the more traditional topics, such as nuclear physics and quantum liquids, the present volume also includes the most recent results on atomic physics, cold Bose and Fermi gases, phase transitions and quantum information. Moreover, the volume contains the lectures of the winners of the 2007 Feenberg Medal and 2007 Kuemmel Award, as well as their laudatios.

This book was released on 2000-09-06 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum many-body theory as a discipline in its own right dates largely from the 1950's. It has developed since then to its current position as one of the cornerstones of modern theoretical physics. The field remains vibrant and active, vigorous and exciting. Indeed, its successes and importance were vividly illustrated prior to the conference by the sharing of the 1998 Nobel Prizes in both Physics and Chemistry by three many-body theorists. Two of those Nobel laureates, Walter Kohn and Bob Laughlin, delivered invited lectures at this meeting, the tenth in the series of International Conferences on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories. This series is universally recognized as being the premier series of meetings on this subject, and its proceedings have always summarized the current state of the art through the lectures of its leading practitioners. The present volume is no exception.A major aim of this conference series has been to foster the exchange of ideas between physicists working in all the diverse fields of application of quantum many-body theory. These include nuclear and subnuclear physics, quantum fluids, strongly correlated electronic systems, and low-dimensional condensed-matter systems and materials. All of these fields and others are represented in the present volume. Other topical themes covered include density functional theory and its applications to nuclear and electronic systems, quantum dots and chaos, and trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Through this breadth of applications the reader will get a clear illustration of the power of the tools of modern microscopic quantum many-body theory, and their usefulness both in achieving a commonality of approach and understanding, and in transferring powerful ideas from one field to another.

This book was released on 2002-12-16 with total page 520 pages. Its most powerful techniques are truly universal. They are constantly expanding to find new fields of application, while advances continue to be made in the more traditional areas. To commemorate the impending 80th birthdays of its two co-inventors, Firtz Coester and Hermann Kümmel, one such technique, namely the coupled cluster method, was especially highlighted at this meeting, the eleventh in the series of International Conferences on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories. The history of the coupled cluster method as told here mirrors in many ways both the development of the entire discipline of microscopic quantum many-body theory and the history of the series of conferences. The series itself is universally recognised as being the premier series of meetings in this subject area. Its proceedings have always summarised the current state of the art through the lectures of its leading practitioners. The present volume is no exception. No serious researcher in quantum many-body theory or in any field which uses it can afford to be without this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains the texts of the invited talks delivered at the Fifth International Conference on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories held in Oulu, Finland during the period 3-8 August 1987. The general format and style of the meeting followed closely those which had evolved from the earlier conferences in the series: Trieste 1978, Oaxtepec 1981, Altenberg 1983 and San Francisco 1985. Thus, the conferences in this series are in tended, as far as is practicable, to cover in a broad and balanced fashion both the entire spectrum of theoretical tools developed to tackle the quan tum many-body problem, and their major fields of· application. One of the major aims of the series is to foster the exchange of ideas and techniques among physicists working in such diverse areas of application of many-body theories as nucleon-nucleon interactions, nuclear physics, astronomy, atomic and molecular physics, quantum chemistry, quantum fluids and plasmas, and solid-state and condensed matter physics. A special feature of the present meeting however was that particular attention was paid in the programme to such topics of current interest in solid-state physics as high-temperature superconductors, heavy fermions, the quantum Hall effect, and disorder. A panel discussion was also organised during the conference, under the chair manship of N. W. Ashcroft, to consider the latest developments in the extreme ly rapidly growing field of high-T superconductors.

The proceedings of the Fourth Conference (Oulu, Finland, 1987) and Fifth Conference (Arad, Israel, 1989) have been published by Plenum as the first two volumes of this series. Papers from the First Conference (Trieste, 1978) comprise Nuclear Physics volume A328, Nos. 1, 2. The Second Conference (Oaxtepec, Mexico, 1989) was published by Springer-Verlag as volume 142 of "Lecture Notes in Physics," entitled "Recent Progress in Many Body Theories." Volume 198 of the same series contains the papers from the Third Conference (Altenberg, Germany, 1983). These volumes are intended to cover a broad spectrum of current research topics in physics that benefit from the application of many-body theories for their elucidation. At the same time there is a focus on the development and refinement of many-body methods. One of the major aims of the conference series has been to foster the ex change of ideas among physicists working in such diverse areas as nucleon-nucleon in teractions, nuclear physics, astronomy, atomic and molecular physics, quantum chem istry, quantum fluids, and condensed matter physics. The present volume contains contributions from all of these areas.

Book Synopsis Condensed Matter Theories by : F. B. Malik
Download or read book Condensed Matter Theories written by F. B. Malik and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This the first volume of the proceedings of the International Workshop on Condensed Matter Theories published by a commercial publisher and of a series which is planned to appear anually. It is a tribute to the group of scientists who started this workshop as the Pan American Workshop on Conden sed Matter Theories in 1977 and helped to develop it to a significant annual international workshop. Many scientists' efforts have contributed to this important development and it is impossible to name all of them. But at least three persons are to be singled out: Professors Manuel de Llano and Angel Plastino who conceived the idea of the annual workshop and carried it for ward, and Professor John W. Clark who has been the prime driving force be hind it in recent years. The Workshop started in 1977 in Sao Paolo, Brazil, as the first Pan American Workshop on Condensed Matter Theories with the idea of bringing together scientists from the Western Hemisphere working in many different areas of Condensed Matter Theories for the purpose of cross-fertilization of ideas used in different areas and fostering collaborations among them. The next five Workshops were held at Trieste, Italy, in 1978; in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1979; in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1980; in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1981; and in St. Louis, Missouri, U. S. A. , in 1982.
