Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic engineering of dams and their appurtenant structures counts among the essential tasks to successfully design safe water-retaining reservoirs for hydroelectric power generation, flood retention, and irrigation and water supply demands. In view of climate change, especially dams and reservoirs, among other water infrastructure, will and have to play an even more important role than in the past as part of necessary mitigation and adaptation measures to satisfy vital needs in water supply, renewable energy and food worldwide as expressed in the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. This book deals with the major hydraulic aspects of dam engineering considering recent developments in research and construction, namely overflow, conveyance and dissipations structures of spillways, river diversion facilities during construction, bottom and low-level outlets as well as intake structures. Furthermore, the book covers reservoir sedimentation, impulse waves and dambreak waves, which are relevant topics in view of sustainable and safe operation of reservoirs. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, highlighting the various appurtenant structures of dams addressed in the book chapters, as well as figures and diagrams showing important relations among the governing parameters of a certain phenomenon. An extensive literature review along with an updated bibliography complete this book.

Book excerpt: Water acquisition, storage, allocation and distribution are intensely contested in our society, whether, for instance, such issues pertain to a conflict between upstream and downstream farmers located on a small stream or to a large dam located on the border of two nations. Water conflicts are mostly studied as disputes around access to water resources or the formulation of water laws and governance rules. However, explicitly or not, water conflicts nearly always also involve disputes among different philosophical views. The contributions to this edited volume have looked at the politics of contested knowledge as manifested in the conceptualisation, design, development, implementation and governance of large dams and mega-hydraulic infrastructure projects in various parts of the world. The special issue has explored the following core questions: Which philosophies and claims on mega-hydraulic projects are encountered, and how are they shaped, validated, negotiated and contested in concrete contexts? Whose knowledge counts and whose knowledge is downplayed in water development conflict situations, and how have different epistemic communities and cultural-political identities shaped practices of design, planning and construction of dams and mega-hydraulic projects? The contributions have also scrutinised how these epistemic communities interactively shape norms, rules, beliefs and values about water problems and solutions, including notions of justice, citizenship and progress that are subsequently to become embedded in material artefacts.

Book Synopsis Hydraulics in Water and Waste-Water Treatment Technology by : Imre Horv?th
Download or read book Hydraulics in Water and Waste-Water Treatment Technology written by Imre Horv?th and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1994-11-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the domains of water and waste-water treatment technology growing attention has been devoted during the past 20–30 years to the study and analysis of hydraulic processes and problems related to the structures involved. These efforts have resulted in the gradual development of a new branch of applied hydraulics which, regarding the interrelated fields of water supply, sewerage, as well as water- and waste-water treatment technology as a unit, may be referred to as the collective term "municipal hydraulics". This special branch is interwoven with several chapters of traditional hydraulics, like pipes, open canals, structures, etc. At the same time, several new chapters on fluid mechanics, such as recent advances in research on the flow of two- and multiphase media and of non-Newtonian fluids have also been introduced for the solution of problems in "municipal hydraulics". In compiling the subjects for the present book the aim of the author was to present a comprehensive review and computation aids to the engineer dealing with hydraulic problems related to water and waste-water treatment. Moreover, the material is also of interest to those working in the field of applied hydraulic research, and in some curricula of higher education. Special care has been devoted to the choice of illustrations as well as on the results of original research work. The diagrams published provide welcome assistance to designers of hydraulic projects.
