Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Hemodynamics and Blood Mimetics is a comprehensive compilation of recent developments in biofluid mechanics and biomimetics, covering topics such as numerical modelling, biomedical applications of microfluidics, biomimetic flows, biomedicine applications, and organ-on-chip technology. This book explores blood hemodynamics at different scales, including application to diseases, the relationship between blood biomechanics and rheology, the mimetisation of blood properties at arterial and capillary level, including the study of blood mechanical and flow properties, flow and surface properties of blood cells, mimetisation of these same properties in fluid/particle systems. These concepts are applied to the development of organ-on-chip to improve the replication of biological processes in the human body. The book organizes recent knowledge on hemodynamics and blood mimetics and is representative of the different lines of research in the field, showing an integrated view of blood biomechanics encompassing all scales to create a valuable resource where different research lines can be found and their principles understood. - Presents comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the latest research and developments in the field of hemodynamics and biomimetics - Features contributions from leading researchers and experts in the field, who bring together expertise from different disciplines and provide a broad overview of the major themes and challenges in the field - Provides an integrated view of the field, from the microscale to the macroscale, from the fundamentals to the applications. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hemodynamics is the study of dynamics in the circulatory system. Hemodynamics has been essential in clinical practice pertaining to cardiovascular diseases from ancient days. Although it is essential because it is based on dynamics and physics, the understanding of hemodynamics is hard for all those concerned with cardiovascular diseases. In addition, with the rapid progress of recent imaging and computer technology, hemodynamics research has undergone an evolution that provides beautiful, colorful blood flow visualization. This kind of innovation contributes novel insights into the approach to the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases. This textbook includes the comprehensive knowledge regarding hemodynamic research from basic physiology to recent clinical problems. This textbook has two parts: the first includes the basics of hemodynamics research and the second presents its clinical applications. This textbook covers all the current topics and all the important historical topics related to hemodynamics. In this edition, each chapter was written by professional authors regarding their respective topics. Careful attention was paid to make it appeal to a wide range of professionals including clinicians, engineers, physicians, and researchers. Each chapter is independent of the others, and this textbook was written both to be read through and to be used as a reference for any special topics. We hope this textbook will provide new perspectives to all those interested in the research regarding hemodynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angiogenesis, the development of new blood vessels from the existing vasculature, is essential for physiological growth and over 18,000 research articles have been published describing the role of angiogenesis in over 70 different diseases, including cancer, diabetic retinopathy, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. One of the most important technical challenges in such studies has been finding suitable methods for assessing the effects of regulators of eh angiogenic response. While increasing numbers of angiogenesis assays are being described both in vitro and in vivo, it is often still necessary to use a combination of assays to identify the cellular and molecular events in angiogenesis and the full range of effects of a given test protein. Although the endothelial cell - its migration, proliferation, differentiation and structural rearrangement - is central to the angiogenic process, it is not the only cell type involved. the supporting cells, the extracellular matrix and the circulating blood with its cellular and humoral components also contribute. In this book, experts in the use of a diverse range of assays outline key components of these and give a critical appraisal of their strengths and weaknesses. Examples include assays for the proliferation, migration and differentiation of endothelial cells in vitro, vessel outgrowth from organ cultures, assessment of endothelial and mural cell interactions, and such in vivo assays as the chick chorioallantoic membrane, zebrafish, corneal, chamber and tumour angiogenesis models. These are followed by a critical analysis of the biological end-points currently being used in clinical trials to assess the clinical efficacy of anti-angiogenic drugs, which leads into a discussion of the direction future studies should take. This valuable book is of interest to research scientists currently working on angiogenesis in both the academic community and in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Relevant disciplines include cell and molecular biology, oncology, cardiovascular research, biotechnology, pharmacology, pathology and physiology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitroglycerin and other organic nitrates have been used for over a century in the treatment of angina pectoris. Millions of patients, throughout the world, have placed nitroglycerin tablets under the tongue and have experienced rapid and dramatic relief from the chest pain that frequently occurs as a manifestation of disease of the coronary arteries. The empirical observation of the safe use of nitrates for tile alleviation of the symptoms of angina have led to their widespread medical acceptance. The use of organic nitrates preceded any knowledge of their mechanism of action or their ultimate metabolic fate. Thus, more simply stated, although sub lingual nitrates helped the patients, little was known concerning what these drugs do to the body or what the body does to the drugs. A substantial number of investigators have focused on these questions especially during the last two decades. We now have considerably more insight into the pathways of degradation of organic nitrates and the relationship of the metabolic processes to the biological action of these agents. Similarly, considerable effort has been expended in understanding the mechanism of action of these agents directly on vascular smooth muscle and on cardiac work and performance. Finally, there is a more substantive understanding of the physiology of the coronary circulation as well as the" pathophysiologic manifestations of myocardial disease.
