Book excerpt: The advent of any new and effective therapy is soon followed by large numbers of publications in which the indications and benefits are explored critically. It is not unexpected, therefore, that within five years of the first Bermuda Symposium on advances in parenteral nutrition that a second Symposium was considered appropriate to review progress and explore new areas of investigation, as well as enlarging the scope of the meeting to include enteral nutrition. The rate of progress can be judged by the number of subjects which were not discussed at the first Symposium. For example, home parenteral nutrition, computer assisted assessment and prescribing, Studies of body protein synthesis and breakdown and the role of branched-chain amino acids are all new subjects for this Symposium which were not covered at all in the first meeting. Much progress has also been made to our understanding of the biochemi cal complications of parenteral nutrition and the problems related to long term access to the circulation. Nutritional care has become safer and more effective. There is an increasing awareness of the difficulties in making a true nutritional assessment in selecting patients for total parenteral nutrition and more attention has also been focussed on different approaches to enteral support in the management of undernourished patients. There is also continuing debate on the cost effectiveness of this expensive method of treatment and critics look in vain for evidence of efficacy based on controlled trials in specific groups of patients.

Book excerpt: As the general public has become more aware of advances in nutrition, consumer demands for advice on matters of diet and disease have grown. This book offers recommendations to upgrade what were found to be largely inadequate nutrition programs in U.S. medical schools in order that health professionals be better qualified to advise and treat their patients. A comprehensive study of one-third of American 4-year undergraduate medical schools provided information on the current status of nutrition programs at each school. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations made from analysis of this gathered information. Questions examined in this volume include: Has medical education kept pace with advances in nutrition science? Are medical students equipped to convey sound nutritional advice to their patients? What strategies are needed to initiate and sustain adequate teaching of nutrition in medical schools?

In response to this need, a decision was taken by The Nutrition Society to produce a ground-breaking series of four textbooks, of which Clinical Nutrition is the final. The books in the series: Provide students with the required scientific basis in nutrition, in the context of a systems and health approach. Enable teachers and students to explore the core principles of nutrition and to apply these throughout their training to foster critical thinking at all times. Each chapter identifies the key areas of knowledge that must be understood and also the key points of critical thought that must accompany the acquisition of this knowledge. Are fully peer reviewed to ensure completeness and clarity of content, as well as to ensure that each book takes a global perspective and is applicable for use by nutritionists and on nutrition courses throughout the world. Clinical Nutrition focuses solely on the sick and metabolically compromised patient. It parallels the text on Nutrition & Metabolism in dealing with clinical nutrition on a system by system basis making the information more accessible to the student. Covering the scientific basis underlying nutritional support, medical ethics and nutritional counselling, the text ends with illustrative clinical case histories. Nutritionists, dieticians and students in these fields will find this an important resource and Libraries in universities, medical schools and establishments teaching and researching in the area of nutrition will find Clinical Nutrition a valuable addition to their shelves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 4 of Advances in Nutritional Research reflects the increased importance that recently has been attached to nutrition in many fields of clinical medicine. This heightened interest in nutrition stems from the demonstration that the intake of specific nutrients may have far-reaching consequences, not only for normal metabolism, but also for metabolic processes affecting clinical or subclinical disease. Conversely, many disease states have been shown to have previously unrecognized effects on nutrient function and metabolism. In addition to topics of obvious relevance to human clinical nutrition, this volume contains chapters dealing with the nutrition of cells grown in culture and of species that may provide insights into nutritional disorders of man. To gether with its predecessors, Volume 4 provides graduate students and estab lished investigators with authoritative accounts of the status of research on a range of topics of current interest in experimental and clinical nutrition. vii Contents Chapter 1.
