Book excerpt: One of the most consistent recent findings is that recall and recognition of items occurring two or more times within a single trial is higher following a distributed-practice schedule (DP) than following a massed-practice schedule (MP). The reported experiment was an attempt to determine if the source of the facilitation of DP on recall could be specified. Each of 320 Ss was presented with a single paired-associate list in which pairs occurred once, twice, or three times, and response terms in repeated pairs were paired with either the same or different stimuli on each repetition. For half of the Ss, pairs were repeated according to a massed-practice schedule (MP) and for the other half repeated pairs occurred according to a distributed-practice schedule (DP). The results are evaluated in terms of Bower's (1972) version of variable-encoding theory, and an analysis of the MP-DP effect in free recall is made. (Modified author abstract).

The main objective of this book is to provide a hard-headed theoretical integration of several different major areas of research on learning, cognition, and motivation in humans and other mammals. By hard-headed, the author simply means that the concepts were generated from empirical data and are testable. Since an integrative theory must of necessity integrate apparent diversity, such an approach involves the identification and description of the most fundamental factors (structural processes) underlying the observed capacities of humans and animals in the domain of learning and motivation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in simulation technology have enabled an interesting amount of training and instruction to be conducted on training simulators instead of on real systems. However, experiences with the procurement and use of training simulators has not always been as successful, often owing to a lack of knowledge of didactics and of training programme development, and also to inadequate simulator specifications. The Handbook of Simulator-based Training represents the first comprehensive overview of the European state of the art in simulator-based training. It also comprises a well-founded and systematic approach to simulator-based training and the specification of simulator requirements. The multi-disciplinary research project described in this book combines the expertise of specialists in human factors, information systems, system design and engineering from 23 research and industrial organizations from five countries - France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK. The authors have synthesized and documented the project results to ensure that this handbook provides not only many valuable guidelines, but more importantly a common frame of reference. It will be a key resource for the many specialists who are concerned with simulator-based training: researchers, engineers, and users; military training institutes and training system development departments; military staff responsible for the procurement of training devices and simulators; the simulator industry; the training research community; and the human factors and ergonomics community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark volume from 1976, Robert Crowder presents an organized review of the concepts that guide the study of learning and memory. The basic organization of the book is theoretical, rather than historical or methodological, and there are four broad sections. The first is on coding in memory, and the relations between memory and vision, audition and speech. The second section focuses on short-term memory. The third is loosely organized around the topic of learning. The final section includes chapters that focus on the process of retrieval, with special attention to recognition and to serial organization. Crowder presumes no prior knowledge of the subject matter on the part of the reader; technical terms are kept to a minimum, and he makes every effort to introduce them carefully when they first occur. It is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses.
